Hi,

I am considering buying a 2015 genesis 5.0 with 65,000 miles from a dealer. There are a few little issues im looking into before purchase. Maybe you all can help!

The first is a pretty loud ticking noise, mostly noticeable during the first 5 minutes or so of operating from a cold start. It seems to be more prevalent after acceleration, it a coasting state. The best I can tell it comes from somewhere near the firewall/passenger side front dash. Im thinking possiblt the high pressure fuel pump? I asked the service manager at the dealership I was at about this and he just repsonded “yea its probably the high oressure fuel pump, they are noisy and thats normal. We could replace it, but it would just do it again”. It certainly doesn't seem like a sound the car would have made when it was new.

The second issue is on a cold start as well. I noticed that giving it a little rev a minute after starting, there is a rattling type noise right around the 2000ish rpm mark. Its quite loud and kinda hard to pinpoint where its coming from. When the vehicle is at operating temperature though, it goes away.

Additional info/concern: the vehicle was a lease vehicle, so the maintenance records are actually very good. It had all major services and regular oil changes at the dealership. The one concern I saw was this. The vehicle was traded into the hyundai dealership right at 65,000 miles or so, and the dealer performed a transmission flush. I asked the service manager about this and he said it was just done for preventative maintanence, And it was in fact a full flush. This was odd to me since they say its a sealed transmission for 100,000 miles blah blah blah. I dont know why a dealership would just change it unless it had an issue. That being said, I have noticed on a cold start first thing id the day, the transmission seems to shudder just a little in first gear maybe for the first upshift or two of the driving process. After maybe 30 seconds to a minute, the trans seems to operate as it should with no problems. Shifts smooth, feels correct.

This makes me wonder one of two things:
was there a problem that a flush temprarily made better?

Or, did the flush actually create a problem, or was the wrong fluid possibly used, or the flush machine contaminated?

Im not sure how to proceed from here, as I am not too familiar with the genesis powertrain particularly.

thanks in advance for any help. I am test driving the vehicle at home for a few days.

I have a 2015 V8 genesis and mine is loud too. If it’s the same sound, it’s just the high pressure fuel injectors which is normal. Annoying but normal.

The ticking is normal for this direct injected engine; sounds like a diesel engine.

However, the rattle noise is not normal. It could mean a timing chain issue or one of its components like the tensioner. Start-up rattle is usually a sign for timing chain related issues on any engine from various automakers. Walk-way from that car and find a 5.0 that does not rattle at start-up.

Here is the ticking noise being the dash/ firewall area

And here is the rattle type noise on a cold start light rev

Well, the engine does not suppose to tick like that while it is being driven. The ticking sound is not suppose to be that noticeable in the cabin. Usually, the ticking can be heard from outside the car; especially in an garage or drive thru, but not in the cabin due to the heavy sound insulation in the cabin.

The rattle noise is not normal at all; walk away from that car. Repeat; do not buy that 5.0!!!!

I wouldnt buy it - there's plenty more around, be patient

Awesome. Thanks guys. Im going to pass on this one, Like ai said Im not familiar with this platform specifically, or hyundai in general, but I knew this stuff didn't sound normal

No not normal at all.

My 2015 5.0 is very quiet except for a slight ticking sound when running that usually can not be heard unless the hood is open or at a drive-tru when the sound bounces off the restaurant walls and my window is down.

Hell, the 2015 Genesis helped give the Genesis brand its start and creditably; so it would not sound like that during its normal operation. If so; Genesis would not have been even considered an option for anyone let alone luxury owners.

A properly running Genesis is very smooth and quiet on the road; especially the 5.0 V8.

Yeah, for mine, I can’t hear the ticking from inside the cabin like that. And mine definitely doesn’t make a rattling sound like that!

Yea, Im thinking the ticking is the direct injector fuel pump on the passenger side, but ai think it needs to be replaced. Its too loud.

as for the rattly type noise on a cold start, I cant imagine what that would be. It almost sounds like when a heat shield is loose, but obviously that would go away when warm, and I did a visual inspection underneath and didnt see anything

If you guys dont mind, what are the most common problems on the 5.0’s? Some things to look for when buying one?

Neither sounds comes from my '13 5.0. Only issue I'm aware of on 5.0's is you can get loose timing chain tensioners in some engines and the proverbial carbon buildup in the back of the valves due to GDI. I installed a catch can and was surprised how much oil was in it first time I emptied it (have not had any issue with the engine though). Car has about 63,000 miles.

Definitely something's wrong with the engine, I'll walk away.

Not many issues on the 2015 5.0 aside from maybe a sunroof rattle and some cosmetic trim(peeling and fading) issues. However, the electronics can be an issue with the taillights(and backup camera) due to a wire harness bracket location that pulls the wires to the point of breaking when the trunk is closed. The fix is pretty simple; relocate the wire harness to a different spot and splice the broken wires.

Note: If the backup camera is not working at all then the optical cable probably is damaged on the trunk wiring harness; walk away from that Genesis if the taillight is out as well because that could mean a new wire harness($$$$$) since you can not just splice an optical cable like regular wires.

The 2015+ 5.0 engines and transmission is perfectly refined without many issues reported.
