  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 Genesis sedan 3.8 is getting 13.5 miles per gallon city!! The gas is killing me! I’ve had the car for 8 months and I’m starting to regret it!

I would love some feedback if possible on something’s that might be wrong with my car.

When you start the car, does it stutter for about 20 seconds? The noise can be attributed to sputtering but then evens out after a bit. You could have clogged fuel injectors on cold starts. These injectors have 6 ports that shoot fuel out instead of the typical single port. They clog very easy and I had the issue around 35k miles. Has been fine since and now have 62k miles. Could also try disconnecting the battery for more than 10 minutes and it'll go back to default settings.

Other causes could be like what has been stated above: short trips, not allowing the car to warm up completely, heavy foot, etc. try using a top tier fuel that has more additives to it. Try and calculate the MPG based on how many miles you drive to how many gallons of fuel is used. The center display is not completely accurate. Hope you get it sorted out.

City mpg numbers mean nothing, zilch, zero. Cannot compare one to the other. Example: Live in "city" in Buckwheat, Idaho. Two stoplights. May get 20 mpg or more. Live in land of the freaks (LA), stand and go all day, may get 5 mpg. Both are "city", because they're not "highway". Only true measure of mpg is highway, and only when flat, and no wind, and when comparing at same/similar speed, temperature and humidity.

Where do you find this perfect Utopia you speak of, kai? Lol, Route 66 maybe?

Good point, skip. Wondering why I didn't catch that earlier when I was shopping for my upgrade, as it may have made me wait for a 5.0.
Yeah, I noticed that too. Kinda reinforced my decision. Of course, that figure can't be "apples to apples". Just an observation from their "regular" driving, whatever that is. I'm sure the V6 has the edge on the highway.

Ran a side test while driving this weekend because I was thinking about this thread.

Car: 2015 Genesis Sedan 3.8 V6.

ALL city driving. No highway at all. Car frequently loaded down with maximum amount of passengers.

Results: 10.7 l/100km (22 mpg for my American friends.)

Pretty good. Now you have to define city, aside from no highway. Traffic lights? Stop signs? Heavy traffic?

When I lived in Philadelphia in a largely residential area there was a traffic light or stop sign at every corner on some routes. Others would be a five mile easy stretch with no stops from 40 mph or so. Huge difference in the numbers.

Hey EdP, I lived on the jersey side of the tacony/palmyra bridge. I dont think I would have purchased a car like the the Genesis if I still lived there. Like you said stop light/sign every block!😖

I was in the Holmesburg section, maybe 2 miles up from the bridge. You were lucky to get 10,000 miles out of your brakes too. You don't know city driving until you get stuck behind a bus or trolley car stopping at every block. Glad I lived there, glad I moved away.

I know the EPA has a set of standards when testing for the city mileage but IRL, it can vary considerably. It varies considerably depending if i go left or right when I get to the main road from my house. One way takes me into some stoplights and a little traffic, the other way takes me to rural, non highway roads with no stopping for miles. Same road, 13 mpg left, 24 mpg right.

2012 Genesis 3.8L sedan.... my wife averages 23.5 mpg with 5 days to work 9 miles away, other runs to Costco which is 9 miles away and some shorter trips. Not all city miles but no speeds over 55 mph
.... Our trips to Florida which is 400 miles one way gives us 28-31 mpg depending on the speeds I run and traffic conditions. I keep Michelin tire pressures around 34 psi and use reg 87 octane gas.

EdP, I'm still in Philly, went from Castor Gardens (Cottman and Summerdale) to Pine Valley (Welsh and Pine Rds) with a 15 mile commute each way two days a week through Abington; average ranges from 13.5 to 18 MPG, depending on traffic, 2015 Ultimate

I was near Cottman & Torresdale and went to Willow Grove. There were three different routes I'd use and they were all about 40 minutes. Your numbers and variance sound about right from my memory of traffic in that area.

My 3.8 always seems to surprise me when I see the trip logs MPGs. I only kick it around every so often though, Generally drive economically.

The 1st time I was kicking my 5.0 around in sport mode, it felt like it was going to take me to jail!

Yep... makes it sound angry - like it's going to eat a Honda!

Have you checked the tire pressure?

My MPG drops a little when the pressures drop below 30.
