  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This beast is a royal PITA to do an oil change. I just attempted to do it at 1800 miles. I have had good experiences with K&N products so I ordered a KN PS-7029 which is listed right on K&N site as fitting on this model. http://www.knfilters.com/news/news.aspx?id=5570 I got Mobil1 full synthetic. I go through all the jacking, supporting, removing the underpanels. I drain the oil. then open up the oil filter and the cartridge in it now is NOT the same size as the K&N filter. I do some calling around and nobody seems to stock an oil filter for this model. One store tells me they can get the K&N filter next day, and cite the same part number I have. I look on the K&N site again and come up with another part# ps-7035, but when I look at the measurements it is not the same size as the Maul filter in there now. Does anyone have the real K&N part number for the oil filter on this that you know fits? If not K&N another high performance full syn oil filter? I know some will suggest the dealer and OEM but it is not very convenient. So far nothing associated with oil change on this car is convenient. I am really hesitant to take it to a shop for a full synth oil change now as I have no idea what i will get back knowing what is involved in this and finding the difficulty in finding the correct oil filter in stock.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Just get OEM from you local Hyundai dealer. Do NOT replace OEM oil filters with aftermarket filters. V6 3.8 dies when using non oem filter AND it voids the warranty. Yup, it's true, happened to a lot of Genesis Coupe owners.

I know you don't want to hear it, but I have to agree with the Angry Kitty. I bought a few OEM filters so I can give them to a shop when I change my oil. None of them in town had the right filter when I called. There are lots of complaints on Amazon for that K&N filter not actually fitting the 5.0, and I really don't see any alternatives out there.

Ditto. Only use OEM filters in newer cars.

Found out long ago these filters are rather rare as my dealer only had 1 in stock. Immediately went to ebay and bought an OEM 5 pack at a greatly reduced price. Also bought a 100pack for less than $10 of those stupid plastic fasteners which are next to impossible to replace. Also picked up 4 replacement air filter sets as they also are a rare breed as the car has 2 of them, a left and a right. Bought these which are aftermarket and I can tell you they are better made than the stock units. See thread here. http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-ge...7937-V8-Engine-Air-Filter(S)&highlight=filter Problem here is the 5.0 is a rare bird and I would not venture away from OEM if in fact they exist. You simply cannot rely on drop down fitment menus as they are no where near reliable.

The filter construction is particularly critical on the 5.0. The reason is that it is not supported by a spindle, but rather by two separate posts - one in the housing and one in the cap.

Screw things up with either a non-oem filter, or sloppy installation, and you are likely to get a crushed filter. The oem filter has an internal rigid plastic lattice to lessen this possibility. Also, the post in the cap is constructed to rotate/swivel for the same reason, to keep the filter centered.

The oil/filter change is also much easier if you suction the oil out with a Mity-Vac (the "Mercedes method").

well I caved in an drove down to a dealership today. I got three so I should be good for awhile. I am going to go out shortly and finish this all up.

There's an old saying that a good trademark is worth 1000 times more than a patent.

This is why trademarks like K&N, Meguiars, and Rain-X rake in the money. Oh, and I forgot to mention BG products.

I have always performed my own oil changes. However, maybe I'm getting lazy or old, probably both. I took one look at what was required on the 5.0, and the dealer looked like a good option. The first oil change at 3000 miles was free. I only use Mobil 1, and the dealer doesn't carry it but offered to use mine if I brought it in. Yesterday, I brought the car in at 7500 miles with 9 quarts of Mobil 1. Had a coffee and a snack. Got my car back with 1/2 qt of oil left over in less then 90 minutes . The car was washed, vacuumed, and the windows were cleaned.
To ice the cake, no charge for the service. Let me say that again....No Charge! Because I purchased the car there. I got home, checked for leaks, none found an the panels were properly installed.
To me this was quality service, and the dealer, Chantilly Hyundai, in Virginia deserves an "atta boy" for good customer service.

It's not that bad with the right tools/experience - remove the front panel to get the filter out. Then use a suction device like the Mity-Vac to get the oil out. Then - no need to remove the center panel out.

I still wouldn't trust the dealer because:

1. Filter installation & placement is critical.
2. What kind & quantity of oil is the dealer actually using?
3. The front panel is secured with combination of fasteners - pushpins & capscrews. Are they all in place? Also, the pushpins are a total joke as fasteners - not meant to be re-used. I bought a couple of pounds of those suckers on Ebay. Did the dealer replace the pushpins? Of course not.

It's really not that hard to do the filter/oil change out. Well maybe not. You need two floor jacks, a MityVac, and an air compressor. And lots of experience, but, at least I know what happened.
