  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 vs 17-18

From hanging out in the OpenPilot Discord group, the 2018 LKAS can steer down to 0MPH if that matters to you. Many times I wished my 2015 did that in stop and go traffic.

In my opinion, the 2015 5.0 ultimate would be a good choice due to the features and affordability. The 2015 5.0 Ultimate has most of the tech as the newer model G80 and nearly the same styling. You really cannot tell the cars(2015 or 2018 models) apart on the road unless you know the subtle details like the LED DRL or the badges.

The 2015 5.0 Ultimate also gives you the sport package with adaptive suspension and the 5.0 V8 engine as well as the luxury interior package with the real wood trim. Both of those features has been separated in 2017+ G80 models where the G80 3.3T sport only gets the adaptive suspension which upsets me because I love the adaptive suspension and 5.0 V8 engine.

Yes, some will argue the 3.3T engine is quicker when upgraded; but not in stock form. Plus, I believe that many people in the G80 buyers market do not want their large luxury car engine modded out due to possible reliability issues when boosting the turbo engine past factory specs. The 5.0 engine is powerful and reliable in stock form.

If you can live with driving an used older model, than I believe that the 2015 5.0 Ultimate model is the best overall deal that can had for about $25000 or less.

It doesn’t feel old to me man. It’s been a creampuff so far. 70K miles and 21,000 USD. Add 2K for a 2 year warranty and I’m loving the car. I wish it had rear phone chargers and maybe rear heated seats and maybe a 360 degree camera but that’s it. The safety features are great.

Aw, I thought the '15/'16/'17 all had true stop-and-go cruise control, no? Or are you saying you wish your specific vehicle trim had it? From their 2016 brochure under the Signature Plus package: "Smart Cruise Control with stop/start"

Do you know whether the screen's software and hardware underneath (including Android Auto/Apply Carplay) is any faster/smoother/at all different in the '18 vs. the '15/'16/'17? Or do they all use the same computer components (CPU, memory, etc.).?

As alluring as the '18 may be, it's going for $30k-$35k used with <50k miles. That's a little too steep for me. :( Too bad because all trims in '18 support Android Auto/Apple Carplay and I really like the larger screen with the Ultimates.

If you can live without Android Auto/Apple Carplay, I'd go for a 2016 Ultimate. Hyundai fixed a lot of things, parts have a longer warranty and there are good number available.

The adaptive cruise is stop and go but I was talking about the LKAS (Lane Keep). The car has no ability to steer itself below 60kph. Not that it was any good to begin with, it ping pongs all over the highway and crosses lines all the time... lol... I installed OpenPilot in the car and it's way better than the factory system. I drove from Vancouver to Seattle with minimal driver input, the car basically drove itself there. Unfortunately, the 60kph cutoff is still there making the system useless for city driving. The 2018 is supposed to be able to steer itself all the way down to 0 which makes it good for stop and go.

I'm a huge tech nerd and have the viewpoint that AA/AC is becoming increasingly vital over the next 5-7 years (duration of how long I keep my cars). In my current vehicle, I have my phone held in a CD Mount which works OK (i.e. looking at Google Maps but operating the phone remains dangerous). The CD Mount is physically much lower in the Genesis G80 making it much more difficult to use a phone for basic functions like Google Maps navigation. Truth be told, I like the 2018 G80 3.8 Ultimate a lot where AA/AC is supported regardless of trim, but it's still too costly @ $35k used.

Ah, thank you for clarifying! Wow, I didn't know about this huge difference in the stock Lane Keep Assist's usability in the '15/'16/'17 vs. '18. Too bad the '17 didn't really see any upgrades (to my knowledge) except for the formal badge change.

Did they do any other stock tech upgrades as part of the '18 refresh? Are there any other differences in usability, speed, etc.?

Does the OpenPilot mod offer any other usability enhancements to the '15/'16/'17 besides drastically improving the Lane Keep Assist?

The only tech upgrade I know of is that the infotainment can now play FLAC files. The 2020 no longer comes with a DVD drive.

OpenPilot has an end goal of being an autonomous driving system that people can install. It's slowly getting there. The lane keep is as good as Tesla, it doesn't nag you to take the wheel once in a while. It removes the 3 second timeout when you're stopped while using the adaptive cruise. It'll change lanes for you by turning on your signal. It's still nowhere near a consumer product though, it's still in the dev stages. Anyone using it now is beta testing.

Not sure why AA/CARPLAY is such a deal breaker for some, now it may just be my age but my 2016.Ultimate is the finest car I’ve owned in 50 yrs. remember now I grew up with an AM radio and a pay phone on the corner. Lol.
Not even sure what AA/CARPLAY brings to the table and frankly couldn’t care less ,seems a lot of folks here can’t live w/o it.........me Phtttt!

Definitely generational. I'm 34 and my impression is that this forum (and Genesis owners in general) skew older. Nothing wrong with that. Regardless of age, if I'm going to plop $25k-$35k on a modern vehicle, it better suit my own needs -- and as a 34 year old tech enthusiast, AA/AC support is one of them.

* Google Maps and Waze are both far and away superior than any car manufacturer navigation. Think about it: you always get real-time traffic updates, road closures, updated points of interest (new restaurants, gas stations, etc.). All for free.
* States are starting to explore "don't even touch your cell phone at all" rules. I think it was Massachusetts who implemented that rule for teenage drivers with a permit.
* Using a phone for phone calls is less popular nowadays. Sending messages through AA/AC while driving is far safer through than fumbling through your phone that has a smaller display screen.

You could argue that I can mount my phone but a.) a CD player mount in the center console is too low making it unsafe to use as a navigation device, and b.) mounting looks cheap in a luxury vehicle.

What it brings to a table is a consistent interface that's agnostic to the make and model. Also brings up to date maps that never need to be updated. The same music interface, etc...

I love it when I hop into a rental car and it has AA/CP because I already know how to use it. When I get a car that doesn't have AA/CP, I waste a lot of time before I leave the rental lot trying to figure everything out. Doesn't matter who makes the car or what car I'm driving... if it has AA/CP then you already know how to use the interface.

That’s great if your driving cross country. I’m 75 Wanna guess what the last car I drove cross country was? 1985 Pontiac Firebird !😂😂

Until some major update is made, I don't plan to upgrade the software on my Genesis. Google Maps/Waze are far superior, being updated so frequently.

Had a K+N filter in a previous car. Had to air blow clean it and then coat with a special oil. Is this the same?

Any downside to this intake change on engine wear/warranty?

Great point, HUD is much more important than AA for me.

I've been drooling over the G70 but my wife and I can't justify ~$50k for a car. :(

Forgetting the G80 '18 for a moment. In your opinion, is it worth it to spend a little more to get a Used G80 '17 over a Used G80 '16 over a Used G80 '15? The '15/'16/'17 all seem very, very, very similar to each other with the '15 being the cheapest of the three. I'd get the highest trim that supports Apple Carplay/Android Auto (Signature Trim with Technology Package).
I used to have an Infiniti G sedan, which is about the same size as a G70. If you take a lot of road trips, you'll appreciate the extra room of the Genesis/G80. Get the V8 if you feel the need for speed. Gas mileage is actually pretty similar...

LOL. The G sedan is small. I got one as a loaner(2008 G37) when my old 2004 FX45 needed some warranty work at my local Infiniti dealer. It was quicker that my V8 powered FX45 for sure, but was too tight inside for my personal taste. I could not wait to get my FX45 back.

The same for the G70; quick car for sure but does not look like a good cruiser due its small size. However, I have a coworker with a 2018 G70 Sport and he loves it. However, he used to have a 2007 G37 before he traded it for the G70 so I guess the G70 size suits his taste.

I like full size cars that are quick and optioned out with spacious room in the driver seat.

Yeah - The G70 actually looks a bit larger than it is in pictures to me. I was surprised to see how small it actually was when I was checking them out on the lot. The Infiniti G had a really small trunk as well, Can't imagine that the G70's would be any larger. I really appreciated the Genesis/G80's "2 body trunk" on my 1st extended 12 day road trip over the Christmas holidays - there was ample room for our coolers, luggage and presents that could all be kept under lock & key. That kind of capacity comes in handy if you need to carry additional passengers... Of course the 5.0 was pretty much unaffected by the additional load. I averaged 25-26 mpg for the trip while driving ~85mph on the Interstate.

Yeah, I sat in a G70 at the dealership and it feels about as small as an A4 to me. Too small. I'm an old man and need to stretch out. I need the room afforded by my 5.0. And don't even get me started about the rear seat room.

Yeah, it is amazing how you can get 25 mpg with the 5.0, even travelling at 80-85.

The 85 Firebird made it across the country? 😁 (I kid, I kid).
