If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2016 3.8 HTRAC Engine Failure

Update:

I decided to go get an update in person yesterday. Cylinders 1,3,5 are misfiring, one side of the motor. Compression tests on this side 1=185, 2=185, 3=180, so passes comp test. Next they leak down tested it, 1=10%, 2=15%, 3=18%, this is called a pass by Hyundai also. I asked if they had bore scoped but they have not. Basically they said they are waiting for engineering to tell them what to do next.

If they order the motor does it come from Korea? I'm assuming this will take a month for customs..

Do any of you have any contacts at Hyundai America? I think it's time to start climbing the ladder.

Sorry to see this...being so new with so few of miles this is concerning. Thanks for keeping us updated on the progress. I wonder if there's a fuel pressure regulator on each side of the rail?

Why do you think the whole engine is toast and will have to be replaced? There has to be a simple explanation for all of this. I am still putting my money on the variable valve system on that bank messing up the cam timing...

I agree, it could very well be in the engine management system somewhere. The dealer said they don't know what it is. Waiting for the Hyundai engineers to come and inspect my car in person...

It could very well be but you would think they checked that already.

Hello Vega,

Sorry to hear about your ongoing issues - that's discouraging and annoying.

My experience with Hyundai service so far is:

1. Tech connects to the ODB port and reads error codes
2. Tech looks at Hyundai service manual and does whatever the manual tells him/er to do.
3. They tell you it's fixed, you drive off the lot and the problem may or may not be fixed.

They don't seem to think independently much (maybe that's just every new generation of techs now at any brand) - and they don't do anything past what the Hyundai manual says. More than one story on here about people driving off the dealer lot only to find the issue is not fixed, and sometimes the cars stalling of exhibiting the same issue as before. I wish they were a little more concerned about making the customer happy and fixing issues, rather than following some manual ...

Cost cutting, plus restrictive warranty regulations by the manufacturers makes that inevitable, but that's not what many expect from a "luxury" brand.

Update:

I called the dealer yesterday for an update, and was told that engineering is having them try some more things. I asked what things? And was told the computer doesn't show updates, so no update. My Genesis app tells me when they hit the panic button to find the car, and once a day I update it and when the doors are unlocked and open, I know they are doing something to it...But no update as to what that something is.

At this point I hung up and called Hyundai America and started a complaint. I have a case number now and am waiting the 5 business days for the rep to contact me.

Thought it was strange that the service manager called an hour after calling Hyundai with an update. His update was that engineering had asked them to try a few more things. He couldn't tell me what those things were either, and I informed him that I had started a complaint with Hyundai. He said that was a good thing and it might light the fire under them.

At the end of the day I just want my car back that I'm about to make another payment on.

Man sorry to hear, I would call none stop at this point to get that motor replaced. It doesn't even matter if it is something simple fact is they have had it this long and can't figure out.

The dealer techs don't have enough knowledge to know how to fix the engine, and the serious Hyundai engineers are in Korea. Engines are rarely rebuilt these days, and most likely they will have to replace the engine. But considering the cost of doing that, they are going to want to make sure they know there is not some simple fix that doesn't require engine replacement. But I would demand a Genesis loaner while the figure it out.

I have a G80 loaner, but there are constraints to loan cars, cant take it out of state...

Hyundai america called yesterday and are going to be a liaison between me and the dealer at this point. He informed me that he would get back to me within 2 days and would be contacting engineering and the dealer and will provide a real eta of getting my car back. Fingers crossed!!

Was this a lease?

Day 48 update:

The Hyundai America engineers are due to inspect my car tomorrow. I did get switched out to a 17 G80 ultimate loaner, so things could be worse. The dealer freaked a little when they noticed the mileage that I had racked up on my OG loaner, LOL.

Did they replace the engine?
I'm interested in what engineering found to correct the discrepancy.
Thanks.

Cappy

No. They are still throwing parts at it. Engineering inspected my car on 9-7-17 and decided to change the HP fuel pump and fuel rails. The service guy calls Friday and says it should be ready to pick up by close of business. So I call Saturday morning and he tells me its still doing the same thing.. So now its been 54 days!

When my Sonata started having unknown engine issues I went through the same thing. Nothing got done until I started calling Hyundai Corporate almost daily. Hope they get this figured out and replace the engine for you.

So I got my Geny back last night, so far, so good. I will list all that they did below.

Parts they threw at it:

1. Upper cat converter
2. Spark plugs
3. Fuel injectors
4. Fuel pump
5. Fuel lines
6. Lower cat converter
7. Right Hand muffler assy
8. Right hand oxygen sensors
9. Gaskets for the above

They did a compression test, leak down test, road test with data logger etc.

All the while and 100 miles of test drives later. They decide to put a PCM and ECU in the car and that did the trick.

So 68 days later I have her back and all seems well so far.:)

Damn so they could of just tried a new ECM and PCM and probably fixed it 60 days ago. Glad to hear your back in business.

I think that's a safe assumption.

On a positive note, Hyundai is refunding two of my car payments for the two months my car was down.

Well, that's nice of them, they could of took all this time and told you to kick rocks after it was all fixed.
