  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has any one heard of such a thing? I thought my wife was losing her mind and parked the car somewhere other than where she said she did but this is not the case.
So she parked the Genesis at a customers home the other day and 3 hours later the car was at least 20’ from where she parked it. It appears it rolled on its own. We tried a test and I asked her to pull the car back to the original spot ,while I was on the phone with her and after placing it in park and locking the car I asked her to walk to front of the car and see if she could push the car and sure enough the car moved. I then asked her to set the emergency brake and try to push it again and this time it didn’t budge!
We then turned the emergency brake off and she placed a mat right behind the front tire to use as a marker and within 1 hour the car had moved almost 2’
Sounds completely insane but this car moved on its own. I called the dealer and the service tech told me it was sliding on the ice that was on the slightly raised driveway but after looking at the pictures she took the valve stem on the tire is never in the same position so it’s not sliding on ice. Any ideas?

I would guess that there is a problem with the parking gear in your transmission but there are members here with much more knowledge that can chime in. Surprised the tech just blew you of considering that it could be safely issue.

I agree. He should have at least asked me to bring the car in to be looked at , no?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I’d think it’s a safety concern for sure!

Assuming your car is not AWD, I believe there is nothing preventing the front tires from moving (unless you activate the parking brakes). The transmission is locking the rear tires, therefore your rear tires could of slided (due to ice) and causing your front ones to roll.

I would suggest doing the mat again, but this time on the rear tires. If the valve steam moves, than theres definitely an issue.

I agree with TxGenesis01, car is likely sliding on the ice, possibly due to improper (not snow) tires or very worn tire tread.
parking brake only locks the rear tires, it does not lock the front, so if the rears are locked via park and brake and the car is moving, then IMO it is sliding on the ice because the tire tread is very worn.

If the parking pawl is broken then you would likely hear a clank or thud when going in and out of park, you might also hear a rattle when driving.

if the parking pawl is severely worn then the car will usually move a large amount after you secure it in park and release the foot brake, several inches, it is quite noticeable.

FWIW I have only ever seen a parking pawl break once in 35 years of working on and owning cars, and it was because the owner (90s VW Jetta) had parked too close to another car and the other car (90s Chevy truck) pushed the VW Jetta out of his way and in doing so snapped the pawl. I watched it happen and the pawl made loud POP and then the car rolled away. luckily it was not on a hill.

Thanks guys for the answers. To update this is a 2016 with 16,000 miles, AWD and babied by my wife. Very well taken cared for vehicle.
Someone just talked to me about the pawl today...something I never thought about.

The pawl isn't the biggest piece of metal. Considering the Genesis weights ~4500 lbs, I'd always engage the parking brake. I believe Lexus has an "auto" engaged parking brake when the car is in Park.
