  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just don't get it. If you don't own a G80 why would you want to put G80 badging on the car?

I guess some folks want to pretend they have the latest model. To each his own, but seems silly to me...

I agree with both of ya ^^^

I debadged my car so all I have are the wings in the rear. I do like the new wings, with their more defined lines so I might be interested. Otherwise I don't care for the rest of it, as rebadging after debadging sounds kinda silly. But to each his own.

Updating wings I can understand, but trying to portray a Genesis as a G80 - not so much :)

Ok, I'll answer why I changed to G80.

I'm not pretending I don't own a Genesis or a 2017 model. I removed the HTRAC badge because I don't think it matches well. I also changed my Genesis to G80 because around northeast Ohio, I don't see many G2 Genesis cars. And I mean hardly any! I like driving a car that isn't seen everyday. I like knowing people are not sure what the hell I'm driving and the wings aren't exactly known to a lot of folks outside of here. I also know that I'm on borrowed time as the car becomes more common. I'm not embarrassed in any way that I drive a Hyundai and I think the car is amazing hands down.

My wife has a new Mercedes GLA250. Mercedes calls it an SUV but it's more like a hatchback version of the CLA250. Again, I've seen very few around here and I enjoy driving a Mercedes that many people have never seen before. It's fun to drive but the infotainment system is the pits. I know it's an entry level Benz but my wife likes it and that's all that really matters.

In 2005, I bought a Chrysler 300 when it was the coolest car that year. People would just stare as I drove by....and soon after they didn't.

In 1991, I bought a new Mercury Capri convertible. Again, people would stare. Back then, there wasn't many convertibles on the road. Hard to imagine moving forward to the present.

I'm driving a special Hyundai and love'in it. At least I'm not complaining that my Hyundai isn't an upscale Genesis which filled 17 pages in a recent thread.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
And then there are guys like me that debadged the car but like the newer wings...
Understandable as that is a subtle change that does not try to make your Genesis something it really isn't!

I would re-badge mine if I buy a 2015 5.0 instead of a 2017 5.0
The way I see it, Hyundai did the 2015-2016 owners a disservice by staying with the identical car when they decided to finally break away and create Genesis as the brand.
You guys are acting like someone has purchased an "AMG" badge and stuck it on the back of an Mercedes E350... the 2015 and 2016 are technically G80's.. They were just having a bit of an identity crisis until now...

I hope those of you who thing it's dumb to change to the G80 badging were not the same people adding the Korean Genesis wings to your first generation American Genesis.
(I did that too, for the record)

I was just at dealership today, here in Orlando, discussing the 2017 5.0. (they had one but it was dealer traded)... I keep falling back on it making more sense to find a low miles 2015 5.0 Ultimate for around $40k.

Well, I think it all comes down to personal choices of what one would like for their Hyundai Genesis to look like for themselves, their friends, their neighbors and the general public they share the road with.

I think it is a lame thought that it is OK to add wings to a car that did not come with wings and then badmouth those that also decide to update the Genesis on the trunk lid to G80 badging. After all, no Hyundai Genesis purchased in the USA ever came with wings on the trunk lid. Although, I did notice ALL the courtesy Genesis' at the HMMA plant in Montgomery have wings on the back to replace the Hyundai logo. Hmmm.

I like the look of the new wings and will most likely change my old wings out one day. I may or may not update the hood wings and I may or may not replace the Genesis badge.

But, I am certainly not going to lose any sleep over it or over what any of the other owners choose to do or not do. Or what they may of may not think of my decisions.

My two cents.

Regards,

Ray

I agree with you Ray. That was the point I was trying to make with the wing addition.

Well, with all due respect I disagree. Removing a Hyundai badge and replacing it with wings is one thing. You're simply putting the same Genesis badge on the trunk that is already on the hood. You're not claiming the car is anything other than what it is. However, putting a G80 badge on a car that isn't a G80 doesn't make sense to me. You're trying to pass of your car as something it isn't? Why?

But like you, I'm not going to lose sleep over what other people do either :D

+ 1. Agreed - replacing the H with wings to match the front is VERY different than rebadging to a G80.

BTW - no one was badmouthing anyone: As I said, originally, "to each his own" - I just gave may opinion as it seems an odd thing to do to me - yours may vary...

Hey. To each his own. I'm going to rebadge my 2016 Genesis as a G80 simply because I wish I had one. I bought my 2016 recently and had no idea about the G80 otherwise I would have waited. Considering the two cars are so similar I'll feel a little better about jumping the gun with that G80 on the back. I feel sorry for anyone who gets upset over that.

What is different between the two cars? From what I can tell, it's literally just the badging, including steering wheel wings. Then of course the maintenance program they are including with the G80..

My previous sedan, I had de-badged the back, less the wings and then added the wings to the hood.

I would rather have the wings, G80, and 5.0 from the 2017 on the back of a 2015 if I buy one.

Yup - no difference but badging, option package bundling/standard equipment, and years of free maintenance stuff and maps.

Bad planning on their part (imho) - they should have figured out how to launch the styling updates that Korea gets for the 2017 G80 to create some difference between the G2 Hyundai Genesis and the NA G80...

I think changing to G80 is similar to simply debadging the back...at least for me. You debadge cause you either like the look, or make it difficult to identify the car, or both. I like the G80 look and the mystique of "wtf car is that?" Additionally, my font is similar in size and appearance to the 3.8 on the other side. I think it looks eloquent and better than the fatter G80 font on the current Genesis.

And no one is hurting my feelings either....

.

Other differences . . .

The wing design on the instrument panel at startup and the larger wings on the Infotainment unit are updated with the new wings. The 4 wheel caps have the new wing design.

The big one is under the hood with a totally new layout of the badging on the top engine cover. Gone is the GDI badge, the V6 is relocated. The new wings are also found here.

Of course the biggie is the different VIN number. One is Genesis Motors, the other Hyundai.

There are probably one or two other subtle changes. I haven't seen a G80 up close at night but, someone said the puddle lights only have the wing outline and no longer has the word GENESIS.

Ray

Thanks Ray,

Now I have to figure out if those changes equate to paying a $15k premium over a 2015
