If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi guys

My brother bought a new 2018 Genesis G80 and The home link buttons do not work when the car is off. I owned a 2012 Genesis and now I own multiple other Hyundais that all have a working home link when the car is off. I wanted to know if any of you have this problem as well as the local Hyundai dealership says this is not an issue, it's just "the way it is"

Thanks

I would not want it to work when the car is off as if car is outside, then anyone can break the window, press the button and open my garage.

But supppose they just let it work until you open the door (like the radio). No security issue now but once you have turned off the car you could still close the garage door behind you.

BTW all other make cars I have driven allow Homelink to work with the engine off.

I have to remember to close the garage door before shutting down motor. Sometimes I forget,
so I just have to hit the button as I enter the house. I agree it's a nice safety feature that doesn't
allow someone to activate garage door to gain entry into your house.

I noticed this as well on my 2018 G80. My previous car was a 2015 Genesis and I often used it after I pulled into the garage and shut the car off.

I just tried this on my '17 G80. With the motor off, start button in the OFF position, pushing the Homelink button works the garage door. I'm not aware of any special settings I have that enables this feature. I didn't know about this, it's a neat feature.

So something odd is going on here. Several folks have posted above that Homelink does NOT work on the 2018 G80 and pmcjr has posted it DOES work on their 2017 G80. Also it does NOT work on my 2017 G90. It is a neat feature!

Any ideas would be appreciated (or did I get the facts wrong).

I don't use Homelink, because when I get rid of the car, I am afraid that I will forget to clear it, thereby permitting the new owners of the car to open my garage door. I have a garage door opener attached to my visor, just like old days.

FWIW, my 2017 G80 also allows me to close the garage door once the engine is off (before I open my door). I wonder if something changed in the 2018 model...

To make sure my post above about this feature working was correct, I just went out to the garage to test it again. The car has been off for a few hours and the Homelink works to open and close the garage door whether the driver's door is opened or closed. It doesn't matter. Again, I have a 2017 G80 and this feature, that I knew nothing about previously, works. When I programmed Homelink for my garage, I didn't do anything special to enable this feature. Maybe a call to Genesis Owners at 844 340-9741 will answer this. If anyone calls, you'll need your VIN #.

Every homelink i have seen works with the key off. Perhaps there is a problem with this specific vehicle.

It is the same with the G90. It is even referenced in the manual that the power may need to be on on some models . I couldn't believe it either.

I'm not sure I've ever owned a vehicle where the Home Link worked with the power off and WHY would you want it to? If the car is parked the driveway, anyone could open your garage door whether you're home or not if they can get into the car. Speaking of that, I recently met a guy who's car was stolen while parked at the airport. The GPS took the thief to his home where the thief stole everything electronic, computers, etc plus other stuff and of course, the Home Link let the thief into the house.

While is nice to have the GPS tell you when you're going to arrive home, you really don't need to know exactly where home is. I set my "home" about 3 block away from my home for this reason. Then there's the registration in the glove box that also has a home address on it. I may get in trouble down the line, but I "inked" my address off the registration so that a break-in artist doesn't have access to my address as well.

Not sure what you're getting at as IF you don't use HomeLink, and you have a garage door, you then have to have a remote door opener in the car. Down the line, if you sell the car, most if not all dealers clear all data including the HomeLink. Even if they didn't, the new owner would have to have your address as well in order to open your garage door.

You can also clear the motor unit in the garage so that past remotes no longer work.

I believe there was a thread here about HomeLink not working on some Genesis's. Don't remember if this was only on the '18's or other previous models. I have an '18 G80 Sport which I've programed several times as intermittently it would forget the code to open the door.

While I haven't tested the theory, the HomeLink was working fine recently until a few days ago when I parked in the driveway instead of opening the door. I then turned off the engine and then pushed the HomeLink button to open the door. Nothing happened so I started the car back up to open the door. Once again, the HomeLink didn't open the door. I've had this car for 2 months now and I think I've reprogramed the HomeLink at least 4 or 5 times because it loses the opening code.

Now I'm wondering if pushing the HomeLink button while not powered, blows the code away? I really don't want to test this theory until the HomeLink "forgets" again. The first time it happened, I went back to my dealer and asked the service department about it and got what I thought was a STUPID reply. He said they couldn't do anything about it as it had to be tested in front of my garage and they wouldn't come out to my home to check it out.

So, in reality, if I want to get into the garage 100% of the time, I have to carry a standalone remote for the door as a backup. I find this outrageous in a 50K+ vehicle.

Strangely, even when the HomeLink forgets the code for my double door garage, it remembers the code for the 3rd single garage door. One time I was pissed so I reprogramed the HomeLink for position 2 to open the main door and then it forgot the code for that position as well. The next time it happens, I'm going to try position #3 to see if that one will remember the main garage door.

I was the one who started the other thread in the G80 forum regarding the Homelink button losing its programming. I keep losing the programming for my first Homelink button. I also programmed the second button for the same garage door and that one seems to hold the programming. I mentioned this to my dealer and they said they would replace mirror since this seems to be a defective unit. I just haven't done that yet.

In terms of setting your home location my mother lived closed to a police station and set that as her home.

I like the police station idea!!!

If this problem happens again, I'm going to make some noise about replacing my mirror as well. The service guy I spoke with about a month ago said since the unit still remembers one of my garage doors, it's NOT defective.

I've had my car two months now and have had to reprogram the button at least once a week. It's usually every few days. I have not found a common cause of why this might happen. It gets frustrating to say the least.
