  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2018 G80 Homelink not working when the car is off

On my 2018 G80 Sport none of the buttons on the rearview mirror function when the ENGINE START STOP button is in the OFF or ACC position (there is no power to the mirror). The ENGINE START STOP button must be in the ON position (regardless of engine running). On my 2011 Genesis 3.8 the buttons on the mirror functioned regardless of the ignition setting. I understand some people prefer it not work unless in ON position, but I prefer to have it function all the time. Make it a configurable setting (Always on | Only when ignition in ACC position).

I've had my car two months now and have had to reprogram the button at least once a week. It's usually every few days. I have not found a common cause of why this might happen. It gets frustrating to say the least.

Did you try programming to another option rather than just #1?

Yes, I got fed up of reprogramming button 1 so I also programmed button 2 as well. I’ve lost button 1 a few times now and button 2 is still working fine.

Because the car "knows" when a key is near or in the car I would think it would not be that hard for Genesis engineers to program the power to the Homelink on when the that occurs without having to start the engine. My last car, a 2008 MB CLK, had a timeout feature - i.e. the Homelink stayed on for about a minute after shutting off the engine - used it occasionally when rain was blowing into the garage after pulling the car in.

I like the way it works. Although I always park in the garage, it would prevent someone from opening my garage door
if the car was left outside. It becomes a habit to hit the button after pulling into the garage and shutting off the car.

I would always prefer to shut my car off and then close the garage.
Why not just lock your car when it is outside.

After a couple of failures with button 1, I switched to button 2 myself, but that only worked for a couple of days before "tanking" as well. The "saw" I got from the dealer mechanic was that if at least one button works, it's NOT the mirror as the 3 buttons are wired together. As far as I know, button 3 which controls my 3rd garage still works, but I don't remember checking it lately as I never put the Genesis in that slot.

Obviously there's a problem here with all these posts. Wonder many others are having this problem, but either don't know about this blog or are just not bloggers. It's probably going to take some serious complaints to Hyundai to fix this. A luxury car should not have something as basic as this go wrong.

You pull up to the garage in pouring rain, the door doesn't open, out of the car, dash to the door, through the house to the garage, open the garage door from the inside, back in the rain to the car and then move it into the garage. BS

Last night button 2 lost it too. I had to reprogram the two buttons. I was lazy and didn't reprogram the first button after it lost its setting a week or so back.

Perhaps this is an issue with an incompatible garage door opener. Perhaps this is an issue with improper programming for rolling codes. Perhaps, because others like myself have never had issues with HomeLink forgetting its programming (or whatever is happening here), this isn't as wide-spread an issue as you believe and has something to do with your specific conditions. If true, this would be very difficult for a dealer to diagnose.

Have you tried completely erasing the HomeLink settings and starting over? Have you tried programming a family member's or a neighbor's garage door opener to help rule out if it's your HomeLink mirror or your garage door opener? Have you checked to make sure HomeLink works with your brand of garage door opener?

This is clearly a problem. I occasionally have #1 button that does not work for me. It seems to be the car position but this a just started randomly. I changed the position of the antenna on the opener and we will see if this makes a difference.

FWIW this problem does not seem to be solely a genesis problem. Try googling “Homelink loses code” and you will see tons of complains but not many solutions. Homelink seems to be the common factor.

You may be on to something, but then why does it work sometimes? A few rides back I had a Range Rover Evoque that wouldn't work period with this garage door opener. My next door neighbor had the same model of vehicle and his wouldn't work with his door as well so we both just packed the stand alone remote. The 3rd door that the HomeLink does seem to work with is a cheaper model of the main garage door opener. IF I got the green light that you solution would fix the problem, I would order a new door opener ASAP as I'm getting tired of this problem.

As I leave in the morning I pull out of the garage and stop at the end of the driveway. I press the button and the door closes. The 2018 G80 has two-way HomeLink, so I sit there and watch the lights on the mirror until it turns from orange to green. When I get home I hit the button several houses down the street. In either case, I've never had an issue opening or closing the door.

I honestly don't know. I use (and have always used) LiftMaster motors and have never had issues. Neither has my wife with the vehicles she's had over the years.

Wow, every brand of car seems to be involved. Probably better to complain to Homelink rather than Geneses as it seems to be their problem.

I would agree that HomeLink is the one to call.

HomeLink

It maybe a Homelink issue. All I know is that I have a wireless keypad and two other car with Himelink in then and none of them have ever had an issue. The garage door opener is only a few years old. The only car to have an issue is the G80. Maybe it has newer firmware in it as the other two vehicles are a 2004 Honda Accord and a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. Those cars work every time. My issue is specific to the G80. And yes, I have tried completely clearing it and reprogramming it.

The 2018 G80 has two-way HomeLink (HomeLink 5). I am betting that the other cars don't.

Right, because a thief would never dare break your window to press your garage door opener if they knew it would work with the car off - as they are polite folks and repectful of other's property... ;)

Why break a locked car window and set off the alarm when you could just break a house window and climb on in.

True, but does the Genesis have an alarm that goes off if you break the window or would you have to also open the door?

Don't know. I never lock my car as it invites damage. Nothing in there to steal. I've had my car rummaged through a few times while others near me had broken windows and pry marks.
