  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2018 G80 Homelink not working when the car is off

Don't know. I never lock my car as it invites damage. Nothing in there to steal. I've had my car rummaged through a few times while others near me had broken windows and pry marks.

do you not lock your house either for the same reason?
Always lock my car. Never in my life have I had it broken in. But all this is anecdotal. Not sure what actual statistics show.

House is locked and once had an attempted break in. Had to replace a window in the back door that had a double keyed deadbolt. Car parked in front of me had the convertible top slashed and a pair of sunglasses stolen. Had a license plate stolen by someone needed a registration sticker. State stopped issuing them for that reason a couple of years later.

Friend had her alarmed and locked car stolen outside of her work, about 20 feet from her office in daylight. Pro will get your car easily. Locks keep the 10 year olds out.

I humbly disagree here. All other things being equal, I think that locks make the target look less attractive and make thieves are more likely to move on to easier targets. Of course if their reward is definitely known to be great then nothing will deter an adept thief. But that is not the situation I am discussing. I lock my car and keep valuables out of view.

I had problems with my Chamberlain garage door opener about 2 years ago so I purchased a GarageMate receiver. You download an app to your cell phone and then you can operate your door from your phone via bluetooth. It works great. GarageMate - BlueMate Labs, Inc. .

So something odd is going on here. Several folks have posted above that Homelink does NOT work on the 2018 G80 and pmcjr has posted it DOES work on their 2017 G80. Also it does NOT work on my 2017 G90. It is a neat feature!

I think it's a BAD idea to have Home Link work with the engine off EXCEPT for those of you who ALWAYS put your car in a garage. Out in the driveway, some of these less fortunate "citizens" break into your car and then have the ability to open the garage door. NOT for me...

I think just leaving homelink active for a minute or two after the engine turns off (just like the lights) is a good compromise.

The question is do you lock your car because if so they may break in anyway not knowing whether homelink is active or not. Of course they could just skip these formalities and just break in your house.

An alternate solution would be that it would work if the key was detected. If you have the key with you, then allow HomeLink to function regardless if the engine is on or off.

It would be interesting to know how many 2018 Genesis G80 owners have never had a problem with their HomeLink forgetting the code. I don't remember my '16 Acura RDX ever forgetting the Home Link code in the 3 years I had it.

I thought for sure I had a problem but I called HomeLink and they were a great help walking me through the issue and a solution. I strongly suggest calling them. You have to listen to a tutorial but then you get to a real person.

In my case I had replaced the light in the motor unit with an LED bulb. That caused all kinds of weird problems. No amount of reprogramming help and I assumed it was forgetting the code. Once I removed the bulb all was good but in a few days it stopped working at night. Turns out I had a single LED bulb near the garage that went on at night. Took that bulb out and all is back to normal.

So make sure you don’t have ANY LED bulbs ANYWHERE near the receiver unit. I couldn’t believe how much interference they generate. If that doesn’t work, call HomeLink before trying your dealer. At lease that worked for me.

I would love to hear someone other than a HomeLink representative explain how an LED light bulb causes issues with the HomeLink transmitter, especially since I have LEDs in every light in my house, including one in the garage door motor unit and two in the garage itself, and I have never had an issue with HomeLink. I even sit at the end of my driveway and wait for the green light on the HomeLink mirror before leaving. Never fails, never forgets the code.

*shrug*

I had a convertible Camaro that had the homelink work while the car was off, had my top down in the driveway while we were in the backyard and someone walked up and opened my garage..

thankfully I have a motion sensor and a door sensor on my garage connected to my house alarm that announces "garage door is OPEN" when you open it, so we heard it and ran out to catch some POS going through my tool boxes and chased him off.

I removed the Fuse in my Lexus for homelink because it worked while the car was off, I am glad the G80 does not work, We don't even keep the garage remotes in the car, we use our phone app or Alexa, and I put my Chamberlin opener onto a timer that will auto close the door after 10 minutes if no one crosses the safety sensor, and announces "MOTION IN GARAGE" anytime someone does pass the sensor.

My garage is at the front of the house and the door faces the street, we can't see the roll up from the house to tell if it is opened or closed and we have no interior entrance from the house to the garage as the previous owners sealed that to make a laundry room..

Because some of these LED lights contain LED driver (not the actual LED light module) that emits too much electromagnetic interference on the same band with your radio.

Google gives you 998,000 hits on LED bulb + electrical interference.

Ok, and what I find online suggests that LEDs in general aren't the issue, but cheaply made ones are. I have a LiftMaster motor unit and LiftMaster/Chamberlain has created a guide for LED bulbs that will work. Mine are on the list. Looks like Genie made a similar guide for their motor units. As a matter of fact, Genie has manufactured an LED bulb that is marketed for use on and near garage door openers: LED Light Bulb for Garage Door Openers | Exclusively from Genie. Heck, Ryobi's garage door opener has a built-in LED light.

So, for it to be suggested that there should be no LEDs at all anywhere near the garage motor unit is misleading and bad advice.

interesting.. When I first put LEDs into my Liftmaster they had immediate issues with the garage remotes. . Not sure about homelink, never tried it.

what I did is switch out the bulbs for E26 to Outlet adapters like these:

Then I installed LED overhead shop lights from here: LED Shop Lights Without Pull Chain | 1000Bulbs.com

and put them as far away from the Liftmaster "brain" as I could, and the issue went away, plus I got much more light in the garage..

Interesting idea.

have to agree here.. We had a bunch of punks hit 28 cars on our street last summer, most of us have cameras so we got their images, but they simply went from car to car testing doors, the ones that opened got ransacked, the ones that didn't like mine they just moved on, they had no interest in breaking windows and waking people.

sad part is that I got them crystal clear on my driveway camera and from the car's dash camera (activates via motion sensor when car is parked) and the police wouldn't take the images, told me since my cars were not broken into and no crime was committed against me directly they can't use it as evidence. They could only take images from the people that suffered a loss.

have to love the CA laws that protect the criminals.

Your experience is different than mine. Car is unlocked if you want to take a look.

I wonder if you turned the photos over to the news media if you would have better response.

Very interesting about LED lights and HomeLink. As to those who don't lock their cars when left outside, sooner or later, you'll be sorry.

Thank you for your opinion, but in 56 years of owning cars, I'm glad they were not locked. The owners of locked cars near me were sorry though, after having their cars damaged.

Either way, a pro will be in your car in seconds. I've seen it done on a busy street where a pro walked up to a car and drove off while passerby did not notice.

INTERESTING. Do you leave your home front door open as well if anyone besides a pro wanted to take a look inside?

Wonder how your insurance company feels about your policy????
