  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2018 G80 Homelink not working when the car is off

INTERESTING. Do you leave your home front door open as well if anyone besides a pro wanted to take a look inside?

Wonder how your insurance company feels about your policy????

No one has in 53 years of home ownership. Nothing in my policy says I have to lock doors. No claims either.

Unlike those that always lock the doors, I've never had damage such as slashed convertible top or broken window. My car has been parked in some nasty neighborhoods at times too.

Ask my friend that had her 6 month old locked and alarmed car stolen during the day about 20 feet from her window.

Tell me again where the downside is.

I should also mention, there is nothing in my car worth taking. Maybe an old screwdriver, Burger King napkins, a pencil. My house has substantial appliances and electronics. I imagine you can see the difference in the situations.

I prefer homelink off when car is off. My 2018 G90 is the first car I've had that IMO got it right. Otherwise when car is unlocked in the driveway its like leaving house keys on the front seat.

I'm with you re HomeLink. If it worked with the doors unlocked AND with the HomeLink hot with everything else shut off, you might as well leave your front door key in the lock.

Due to the short space I have in my garage, it's easist to shut down the car, get out and walk behind the car, then pressing the garage door switch by my door leading into the kitchen to shut the garage door. And this procedure is manatory if I have something in the trunk (boot) or the trunk door would hit the garage door when it's opening.

Having grown up in Chicago and having had cars broken into 6 times, I prefer that HimeLink not be active when the car is off. The one exception would be if it could detect presence of the key fob and function if the key is there.

However, I lived for close to 40 years in the city and I learned over the years that anything not bolted down would walk. Grills had to be locked in the yards even. I have seen hose reels taken. Where I live now I’m sure I could leave the car unless clef and probably not worry much but old habits die hard.

Anything for a buck. Family out in Burr Ridge had some stuff "liberated" because they thought, "it's the 'burbs...it'll be safe." WRONG!

From all I've read about the matter of car prowls, generally if the vehicle is unlocked, whatever is in the car is fair game. I had one once that "liberated" my knock-off CD's. And if the vehicle is locked, they go somewhere else unless they see something valuable in view. I have a neighbor a few years back that went to the beach. While in the parking lot, she put her purse on the floor in the back seat, locked the car and when swimming. When she returned, she found the car broken into and the purse was history.

I'm guessing some guy watched what she did with the purse before locking the car. As soon as she left, he probably went to "work".

You could hide your vehicle registration in a not common place so others will not find your address.

If you forget to clear the remote in your car when you sell it, you can change the code on your garage door.

I'm thinking of blacking out the address on my registration although I doubt anyone could steal my G80 without the fob key.

You bring up a good point. I've seen both here and other places where people take some pains to put a different "home" address in navigation to foil thieves. I wonder if the registration and insurance card is in the glove box? Or service records or other paperwork.

I don't buy/sell cars that often, but I do have a sell checklist that includes: call Sirius and cancel for that vehicle and transfer to new vehicle if applicable, erase Homelink settings, clear out glove box (Registration, etc), trunk, etc. Make a list and put it in the glove box should you be persuaded to trade your car in for a 2019 G80 when all you went to the dealership for was and oil change.

no insurance cards, use a phone app for that.
registration stays in wallet
only thing in my glove box is the owners manual
no need to program my home or work in my Nav, I know where I live and work.

I'd be careful with the insurance card. If you hand an officer an unlocked cell phone, does that mean he/she can search the device since you have unlocked it?

When I lived in PA the registration was a small card like your license so it was easy to carry. In CT is is a full sized sheet that would be harder to carry. Of course, if you share the car at times it may be harder to keep track of it.

We no longer have the sticker on the plate either. They were getting stolen so now the cop can check on the computer. Before they started that though, I did get stopped once for no sticker. I had been driving for a year with the old one It came in the mail on a snowy day so I put it aside for another day and forgot about it. Took a while to be noticed.

don't share my car so not a concern.

yeah stickers get stolen here a lot as well, I usually razor blade a crosshatch on mine so they can't take it, they just get pieces.

I use a front pocket minimalist wallet, so my Disabled ID and Registration form are folded and in one of those clear credit card wallet inserts.

Here in Texas, the registration is a huge sticker mounted to the windshield. Ironic that all other states haven't migrated to this method. Got pulled over in Missouri and had a 10 minute back-and-forth with the officer about the sticker being the registration.

Good luck with that one. Back in the era (2000 or so) I said "hell no, I'm not paying for radio when AM/FM is free!". Then bought a car with Sirius installed (3 month tryout or something). Sirius had a lifetime subscription for about $350 which was supposed to be transferable. Did the math and it looked like I would be making money after 37 months so I went that way. Then my new car string started. Transfered 2 or 3 times without any problem. I think I had to pay a some fee. Car #4 is when I started getting crap about transfering, but they let me. Just bought my G80 a few months ago and called them up to transfer and was told "FORGET ABOUT IT!"

A few hours later I received an email saying to call "madam X". Got her on the phone and after a bit of back and forth, she said I could do it ONE MORE TIME, but this time was the FINAL ONE.

So, we'll see. I thought my G80 might be my last ride. Less than a year to go to put 80 on the clock. I'm NOT backslideing into a G70, but if the coming Genesis SUVs are close to the Porsche Macon or something similar

There are two separate issues here. One is that according to other threads, LEDs installed in the garage door motor unit may interfere with the Homelink frequency. I had the intermittency problem, changed out my LEDs and the problem disappeared.

Two: Apparently for 2018 the operation for the opener is now only being allowed with the ignition on for security reasons, at least my 2018 works that way. When you think about it, it's a simple way to add a bit of security and I can live with having to having the ignition on to operate the opener.

There is a third issue as well and that is the problem I explained in the original post. I replaced my LED bulbs to the ones Chamberlain recommended and I have still lost the programming for button 1 several times. It has less frequently now but it still loses its programming.

I just replaced my LEDs with incandescents in the head unit. So far, no problem.
