  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have read several forums about what fuel to use in the G80 3.8. Genesis says 87 octane is fine BUT as a car guy I look at an engine with 11.5:1 compression ratio and direct injection and I believe that premium fuel would get the maximum benefit from the engine. The computer will adjust timing to run on low octane fuel but retard the timing so engine does not get maximum performance. I am running 97 octane in my 2018 G80 3.8 and it is sporty.

Any comment?

Hyundai/Genesis has recommended a higher octane (92+) for "maximum"performance, but the majority of their vehicles are designed to do "just fine" on 87.
Plenty of threads here discussing the pros & cons of 'which gas to use?"

I am going to use 92+ so I can get better than "just fine" I am firm believer in the recommended "Tier" gases

Your money, waste it as you see fit. I'd agree on the 5.0, but not the 3,8 If you were a real car guy you'd have the 5,0 for best performance.

From the manual:
Your new vehicle is designed to
obtain maximum performance with
UNLEADED FUEL, as well as minimize
exhaust emissions and spark
plug fouling.
3.3/3.8 engine
Your new vehicle is designed to use
only unleaded fuel having an octane
number ((R+M)/2) of 87 (Research
Octane Number 91) or higher. (Do not
use methanol blended fuels.)
5.0 engine
Your new vehicle is designed to use
only unleaded fuel having an octane
number ((R+M)/2) of 87 (Research
Octane Number 91) or higher. For
improved vehicle performance, premium
unleaded fuel with an octane
number ((R+M)/2) of 91 (Research
Octane Number 96) or higher is recommended.

Yep. Maximum performance with 92+ performance. Since the 3.8 is not "boosted" I will spend the extra for Tier premium. Personal chose

BTW. I was driving a 2014 Audi A8L and "downsized" to Genesis. I did not want to pay for Audi maintenance. I had 2009 Genesis and really liked it.
