I don't use LKA very often as most of my driving is winding roads through the countryside. However, in February before the lockdown I drove from New Jersey to Ohio and back and used the LKA most of the time. It seemed as though I was just bouncing between the lines. In fact it would often (even on a straight road) wander onto the line and give me a wheel shake warning. It behaved the same way whether it was in Active or Normal. Is the common?

I feel it doesn't sound necessarily unusual. If a driver doesn't have a much experience with LKA it takes some time to get accustomed to it. I wouldn't categorize mine as bouncing between the lines but as it approaches a line it steers the car away from it but not into the opposite line.

It is basically designed to keep you in the lane if you are driving distracted, if you have hands off it will bounce around the lane, as it is not programmed to drive the center of the lane, but to keep you between the lines, so depending on the width of the lines will depend on how much variance there is.

I have found on narrow streets with tight lines it manages pretty well, on highways with wide lanes not so much.

it is not designed for hands free driving.

I test drove the G70 and the G80 (bought the G80) and the G70 LKA was much better than the G80. It kept the car centered in the lane and the car pretty much drove itself until the "get your hands back on the wheel" warning went off.

Not sure why they're so different but they are. It's almost like the G80 it's looking at too narrow of a window and not seeing the lines until it drifts into one.

I have a new 2019 G80 with about 1350 miles on it so far. I agree that the LKA is more of a nuisance than a help. It seems to be always trying to steer the car to either the left or right lane edges when I am trying to keep the car centered in the lane. I am inclined to shut the dam feature off most of the time.

probably a difference 3-4 years in the tech. G70 tech would be newer, newer systems all around.

Doubt they have changed anything significant in the g80 since 2015/16. Just software feature enhancements.

As I have, as well.
I'd like to swap cars with you guys for a day. I wonder if it is the adjustment on the car or the way we drive. In two cars and 70k miles I'd had the alarm go of twice. I never get the drifting back and forth even with hands off the wheel, though the lane position is not perfect, especially on curves.

Swapping cars would help determine if I just tend to move the steering wheel more or if mine is not controlling as much as yours. Aside from an alert if you are dozing off, I see little value from the system.

Make sure the LKAS response settings are the same otherwise 🍎🍊

Agree. I have also noticed occasional confusion in the system when an exit lane suddenly presents itself...it steers me toward the exit lane. I think it is a good thing for long highway rides, but a bit of a distraction around town.

Yes, I set mine to the more aggressive setting, Active... I think it's called. It seemed to help a little, but the car still bounces between the lines - unlike the G70 which felt like it was in rails.

When you say it bounces between the lines, are you holding the wheel?

No, letting it go, it drifts toward one side then bounces into the middle, or to the other side, and bounces back.

I realize that's not how it's supposed to be used / driven, but with the G70 I drove, you could literally let go for 10+ seconds and it would stay centered.

Different model
different year
different technology
so different performance

Yeah, the 70 when set to active will almost drive itself.

I do it on long drives on the highway.

No “hand on wheel” warning message?

Eh, only when going around a larger corner.

I found that in active I get it less actually. In normal since it would ricocheted between lines it expected more driver input. In active it just centers itself and doesn't expect much from me I guess.

I don't think I ever expected the LKA to keep the car perfectly centered in the lane, thought that WOULD be nice. But when it actually drifts onto the line on a straight well marked highway and gives you a wheel shake, that doesn't seem right. Certainly not very useful.

For the record, I had my hand(s) on the wheel, but was letting it do it's own thing just to see what it would do.

The LKA on our brand new 2020 G80 Sport seems to work just fine to me. I was impressed that it did not bounce back and forth when I was playing with it.

It’s just dated ‘18 technology at this point. My ‘19 Santa Fe does what you want, so I imagine a ‘19 G80 would too.
