  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2019 G70 38,000 kms. Battery is fully charged. Dash lights and radio come on but the car won’t crank, let alone start. Message on dash says that the car engine is on when it clearly is not. Boosting did not make a difference.

To compound the issue: The car couldn’t be towed because it wouldn’t come out of park. I did open the little cover near the shifter and depressed what was under it with the key while moving the lever to neutral but that wouldn’t release the parking pawl.

Any ideas?

Could it be a problem with the relay on the brake pedal? The car has to know that the pedal is depressed before it will start.

Definitely worth checking!

You can hold the start button for over ten seconds to bypass the brake pedal switch.
Good idea. I just tried that and the car didn’t start, sooooo I guess it’s not the brake pedal switch.

My G70 manual says doing that bypasses the brake switch fuse but I don’t know if that bypasses the brake switch itself.

OP - Have tried to remotely start the car with the fob?

Yes, tried by pressing the fob on ignition button. Same results as starting it the normal way. The most pressing problem is that I can’t get the car out of Park to tow it. Any suggestions?

I don’t have any suggestions for getting the car out of park other than trying again, carefully following the instructions in the manual.

Pressing the fob against the start button to start the car still requires the brake pedal to be depressed. Try remotely starting the car with the fob from outside the vehicle, which doesn’t require the brake pedal to be depressed.

That’s an idea! I can do it from my phone! Thanks!

I have the answer. To get the car out of Park using the button under the little cover on the dash, 1st push the ignition switch and let it go. Next press the brake and keep it depressed. Then push down on the hidden knob until you hear a click. Then the car is no longer in park.

The issue was the starter. There are 52 on back order in Canada and Korea will be shipping 38. No ETA. Could be weeks, could be months. It’s the same starter for the G80s and G90s. The part actually says Hyundai/Kia on it.

The subframe has to be dropped and the engine disconnected and lifted. It’s a huge job as the starter is not anywhere where it’s easy to re and re.

This is the 3rd major issue on the vehicle since the warranty expired. The first was a steering rack that went. The part too, 3 and 1/2 months to arrive, the car was 6 was out of warranty and no courtesy vehicle could be provided as a result. That cost $5000. Then at 28,000 rear brakes were required. Another $1500. If a starter is found, the bill will be over $1200.

The car has 38,000 kms. I’m thinking it’s time to trade it in.

That’s horrible. I’m shocked that they don’t have parts readily available.

Are you just going to live without the car until you can get it fixed and trade it in for something non-Genesis?

It is not time to trade. It is PAST time to trade. The price on brakes is excessive and not a warranty issue anyway. Local shop would have been much less.

My method is to trade before the 5/60 warranty expires. Over many years I've had many high mileage cars but today, they are much more expensive to fix. I eliminate that risk. My last G80 was heading towards that steering rack so, bye bye.
