  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I read somewhere that the 2020 model year may have a coupe version of the G70 possibly based on the essentia concept. Anyone have any info on this?

I thought that was later debunked.

Yeah, I'm pretty skeptical. I think some derivative of the Essentia may well see the light of day eventually but I don't think it will be that soon. If a coupe materializes, I would expect it to be a lot closer to the G70 in appearance and underpinnings than to the Essentia. The latter, I suspect, will be a separate model with a substantially higher price tag than the "regular" coupe, whenever that appears.

Agree. I think that may happen, but a long time down the road. They have to get the money makers in the market first, like the G70 nationwide and then an SUV. They don't need a Cadillac XLR equivalent in the lineup.

I believe I heard that the compact and midsize SUVs are delayed until the start of 2020, so the release schedule is likely something like this as a result:

2019: G80 refresh
2020 (early): GV80, GV70
2021?: G70 Coupe

The new G90 is somewhere in there. The coupe will likely follow the design language of the refreshed G80, which will follow the design language of the GV80 prototype. As stated before, I doubt it'll follow the Essentia design language. A reason I like the G70 now is that it won't have the weird straight-line headlights that the GV80, Essentia, and likely the new Genesis products will have.

Hmm. I really got excited that a coupe may be in the works sooner, but if it’s gonna take that long, I won’t be able to wait. So sick of my Optima, and 4 door front wheel drive sedans in general. Will have to test drive the g70 when they finally hit the dealers near me.

I will need a new SUV in the next 1-1.5 years and was really hoping the GV80 would be at dealers by late 2019 or early 2020 so I could consider one. Hopefully they don't delay too much.

Coupes are inconvenient and impractical and for what purpose? They should add a liftback model instead.

Yes they are, but they also look good and can be fun to drive. I've had a few in the past and would get one again if I ever bought a second car.

I like coupes because I don't usually need the 4 seats (no kids), but they're there if necessary so the car has that practicality. It's smaller and more athletic than a 4 door, but it's not as impractical as a sports car in the trunk department because of the folding rear seats. The bigger size than a sports car also usually means a more compliant ride like a grand tourer.

Don't you mean the new G80 and the G90 refresh?

In a spy shot article on the G80, they mentioned it was just a refresh. I distinctly remember that because I was disappointed because I want the interior button console redesigned, and a refresh makes that less likely. How accurate this source was I'm not sure of, because as you imply it does make more sense for the G80 to be brand new since it carried over basically the same from the Hyundai Genesis and its age shows.

Thinking on it more, I would bet that the new Genesis coupe will be all electric. Maybe they aren't planning on it right now, but it's far enough off that they can still redesign or delay it as an all electric vehicle. And I bet Hyundai will want an electric sedan/coupe on the market ASAP considering 1) the market disruption and high sales the Tesla Model 3 has had and 2) the shift of investments into electric most manufacturers are doing right now. Considering the Essentia was all electric too, the R&D is there too. I don't think Hyundai has an electric vehicle in the pipeline right now other than the Kona, so the Genesis coupe would be the earliest chance and the right market segment to jump into.

I initially had my doubts about the coupe being like a mini Essentia because it's too fringe, while Genesis is still trying to get mainstream vehicles on the market and has a lot of development on the G70 to build off of for a coupe. But the market shift and potential sales shown from Tesla are too significant to ignore. The good reception of the Essentia and Genesis' verbal support of electric vehicles may also hint this direction. What do you guys think?

I think you may be right. For many of us, electrics are just not practical, but they are getting better and many have decent range now. I also thought digital photography would take longer to catch on but all of a sudden, I've not used film for years. Cars may get there too.

If you are buying a coupe, it is usually because you want a fun car with performance. The acceleration is phenomenal on them with less than 4 seconds to 60 for some. Couple that with good cornering and you can have some fun on the back roads.

You mentioned Tesla and their sales are now greater than some of the sedans of other makes. Electric is accepted by mainstream car buyers and Genesis has to jump in at some point.
