  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all. At gas station last night, went in, came out and car wouldn't let me unlock using door button. Used button on FOB no problem, but entering car it wouldn't start and dash stated "key not detected". Finally got car running by pushing the start button with key and got home. Changed battery - no help. Tried other fob - same thing. Changed battery in other fob - same thing.

Not sure why this happened or how to fix it. I have regularly scheduled maintenance coming up on 3/1 and they're going to take a look at it then (of course they couldn't get me in sooner). Anyone have tips on how to re-pair the fob to the car? Had a similar issue with wife's bimmer a while ago and it was pretty easy, lots of online tutorials. All the Genesis stuff I found on youtube and elsewhere was for older model vehicles. Can you double press the lock/unlock with accessories up and do it that way?

Ultimately I can still run my car and lock/unlock it, but I'd like to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

It seems more likely (since it is both smart keys) that the transceiver in the car for the passive function has failed.

You don't have a warranty? Good chance it is a component in the car not seeing the signal.

Odd, but it does sound like the car communication wise has lost some pairing ability to the FOBs. The fact the unlock feature worked but the start feature would not see the FOB was present is really strange. I had a 2015 Buick SUV that while on family vacation it lost pairing of all tire pressure sensors and the FOB all at once. Did this all on its own so we were stuck using the key for a while. Stopped at a dealer when we got to the next town and they had a hand held gizmo that got the TPS all realigned to the car and they plugged into the OBDIl and repaired the FOB to the car. 10 minutes we were good. The Buick dealer said sometimes they have seen cars completely disassociate itself from all wireless communication but do not know why? We never had another issue like that. Let us know what your dealer does since your under warranty.

Not as strange as you are thinking.
The smart key (and the car) has three different and separate RF systems.

1. A long range one-way system. The key transmits any of the buttons being pressed on the smart key to the car with the long range system. This system is powered by the battery in the smart key. This system is working, since pressing unlock on the smart key unlocked the door.

2. A medium range two-way system. This is the one that causes the mirrors to open as you get close, and allows you to unlock the car by pressing the button on the handle or the sensor on the inside of the door pull, depending on the year of the car. It is also the one that allows you to start the car while the smart key is in your pocket or anywhere else inside the car. This system is also powered by the battery in the smart key, but it is otherwise separate from the long range system. It uses different frequencies and a different transmitter, and has a receiver. This system is not working, as they could do none of these things.

3. A short range two-way system. This is the one that allows you to start the car by holding the smart key to the start button. It is powered by RF from the car, not the battery in the smart key. This system is working, since they were able to start the car this way.

So, the long and short range systems are working, but the medium range one is not. Since they tried both smart keys, it is very likely that the fault is with the medium range system in the car itself. I don't see it as strange that one system might fail, yet the others have not.

Thank you for all the replies, really appreciate it.

Yes it’s still under warranty. My dealership like many others apparently is so far out when trying to schedule maintenance it’s ridiculous. I need oil change, tire rotate and cabin air filter per vehicle recommendations anyway, so I also mentioned the key fob and the possibility of getting in sooner for that. No can do, the soonest they can look at that is 3/1 as well.

Something I didn’t mention was when this first happened, I tried to remote start the car from my phone several times and that didn’t work either.

Suppose it’s a first world problem I have to actually take my keys out of my pocket to open the door and start the car, but it is annoying. Thanks again for the help.

I wonder if you can "reset" the system by disconnecting the battery (the car) for a couple of hours (may end up loosing some settings too). Also double check the polarity of the battery in the fob(s). Should be easy to check without opening them if the led on the fob lights up.

Better to take it in if under warranty.

Having the same problems with my 2022 G70. Taking it back to the dealer 2/28 for a second look. The first time it stopped working for 2 weeks and the starting working again but it often repeats the problem. Thanks Joegr for your info on the 3 RF systems. Sounds like my middle range system in intermittent.
