  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

HI there,

Happy owner of a G80 5.0 here.

Thinking about adding the G70 to the family stable.

I have a question about the automatic transmission in the G70 3.3T and wonder if anyone here knows the answer.

In my G80 5.0 the transmission can't lock in "manual mode" when I use the paddles. After a few seconds it reverts back to full auto, even in dynamic mode.

Is this how it behaves in the G70 also?

I'd like a transmission that stays in manual mode until I - the driver - commands it to revert back to full auto. Can I do that with the G70?

Thanks for any insight here.

There is no constant Manual mode with the shifter or a button? My Cadenza using paddles will do a temporarily manual mode, but will still stay in a gear for extended time if your RPM's and speed don't change much, shifts back to D if variables change to much. But with the shifter pulling it to the left leaves it in manual mode fulltime...The G80 doesn't offer this?

The Ultimate has shift by wire and they took at away.

The Cadenza is shift by wire, essentially every car out there now is shift by wire. But even a Maxima with CVT and paddles, you can get it into static manual mode with the shifter...then shift with either the shifter or the paddles, but it remains manual, within reason, it still knows to drop you into first or the equivalent in a CVT when you come to a stop.

If it's anything like the Stinger, then there is technically no dedicated manual mode. Once you start using the paddles it switches to a fake 'manual' mode, allowing you to shift up and down with the paddles; but, if you bring it close to redline it will automatically upshift, and vise versa of you're slowing to a stop in a higher gear it will downshift for you. But, it will hold the gear otherwise, at least giving you some control.

I kind of hate it.

I assume the G70 is the same.

it's a matter of programming, and it make zero sense to me why the G80 Sport won't hold a gear ESPECIALLY in Sport mode.

back in 2005 when the Chrysler 300 SRT came out, it had the same issue, several after market companies added the ability to hold the gear in aftermarket hand held tuners.

Hopefully Genesis or some aftermarket company released programming for it, but I won't hold my breath.

If you turnn off the safety features (same as launch control)...gear is held.

This is per our Canadian peeps.

To clarify: in Sport Mode, the car will stay in manual indefinitely once you've pulled a paddle except when you drop below 3 mph, at which point it reverts to D (a quick paddle pull puts it back in M, even sitting at a light). This last bit is annoying and will hopefully be changed later on.

Additional wrinkle is that in full ESC OFF mode, the car will also stop auto-upshifting at redline and bounce the limiter.

wish the G80 did this.

No, there is no "pulling of shifter to the left" in the G80. And it seems the same with G70 from pictures.

The G80 5.0 is not like that. The G80, even in Sport mode, goes back to full automatic after a few seconds. I can use the paddles to reduce from 5th to 4th, for example, but after a few seconds, regardless of what I do, it will revert back to D.

It is actually distracting and therefore dangerous. You're in 4th, taking a turn, and in the middle of the turn the card decides to go back to D in what would be the 7th gear. It is a disaster.

ok, I can tolerate that. "To stay in manual indefinitely". The G80 5.0 does not do that. Thanks. I appreciate the input.

I think I read somewhere that the G70 holds gears in corners rather than upshifting. Did I dream that?

I think I remember reading that as well. I've read so many things though I have no clue where or when.

This is good news. Thank you for the clarification!

Best response here and I agree 100% with my experience owning a G70 3.3T Sport. :)
