  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone, new member here. I've had my 22 g70 for a few months now. When I bought it it already had intakes and secondary cat deletes on it, I added a lap3 tune. My question is, all you guys that are modded do you feel like the gains were worth the price? After the tune the car feels amazing, but it seem to lose to cars in the Sam category with less mods 340's, s5 etc. i ran 11.3 at the track, but it's not enough it seems. Personally it just seems like you're better off leaving it stock, or going to a different brand if you want to mod. I was just curious if anyone had any regrets after modding their car.

What are you really asking here? Did you overpay for your modded four cylinder and are not happy it is matching six cylinder performance cars?

The 3.3T is worth it, subjectively. For you, likely well worth it. Then you can mod it lol

The question was does anyone have any regrets modding their car. I don't have a 4 cylinder, I was just curious if anyone else regretted going this route versus getting a different car

Not me. It's plenty quick, especially modded. If your goal is to beat everyone then you will need a faster car but no matter what you get there is always someone faster.

Model S plaid?

Seems to me that you should be looking at an actual 'sports car' and not a luxury sport sedan. Something like a C8 Vette or 911 Turbo. My 3.3T feels quick with just intakes and I rarely give it the beans.

Well my previous car was a f80 m3. I ran into a new Audi S4 a few weeks ago, it made me start questioning if the g70 should be considered a sports sedan

Time to sell it

If you are modding so you have can have a faster car than the next guy, then you'll forever be stuck in that HP loop. So you bone up your stock 365HP to 420HP, there will be guys rocking 450. Trade your G70 up to a 500HP hotrod, there will still be guys with 650HP. Fast cars are just that... fast cars.

It isn't until you get embarrassed at the AutoX, or on a road course, by an old guy in a beat-up ol' Miata that you realize that "being fast" isn't about fast cars... it's about fast drivers. Driving is a finesse sport. The slowest part of what goes around the track will always be the lump of noodles between the driver's ears. I myself find it far more rewarding to improve one's own driving skills, than to "buy" HP to get ahead. Modding a car, to me, is about sharpening a learning tool, to make better the connection between man and machine.

That said, we bought our Stinger and G70 as daily drivers first and foremost, and track tools a distance second. They are far better at their primary task and perform admirably - albeit somewhat compromised - in their secondary purpose. Some mods helps to tilt that balance slightly. Everything is a compromise, a dedicated track bunny would invariably be difficult to live with on a daily basis.

These cars are like sport touring motorcycles. They handle quite well but would never be as good as a pure sportbike. Keep your perspectives in check and you'll find yourself a happy owner.

Or how about a Koenigsegg, or GMA T.50? They're only $3M. Come on man. Who's going to be cross shopping a $50K G70 and a $200K 911 Turbo? Even an M3 is out of reach of most G70 shoppers IMO, and it's 'just' like 20 grand more expensive.

I was just curious if anyone regretted modding their car vs getting a more proven platform, that's all. Seems like a few people took the question the wrong way

Well, can't speak for everyone, but I certainly did not read it wrong.

Problem with the way you phrased your question is that you are essentially asking 3.3TT G70 owners here whether they believe they bought the wrong car and wasted a bunch of mod money. Apologies if that sounded harsh, but that is the gist of it.

Instead of answering your question directly, I figured I'd answer it in a different - maybe more philosophical - way. Understand it isn't what you were asking for exactly, but it is nonetheless related to the topic at hand.

Ok fair comment. No regrets. It's been such a great car and the 3.3T is second only to the B58 in my opinion.. but that's only for bragging rights. It's such a versatile motor with tons of potential. Keep in mind that platform is really quite new and ECU tunes have only existed for a couple years max.

So if it's not the fastest car on the road it can't be considered a sports sedan? Sorry that doesn't make much sense.

If your primary goal is quickest acceleration why would you by a G70? If ruling the streets with acceleration is the goal the G70 would be low on my list of cars for that application. The G70 does not have the best engine or the best transmission but they're both very good. The best costs more money.

I have no regrets regarding mods because I haven't done any (related to power). If I wanted a faster car I would have bought a faster car. Intakes that use filters that allow more dirt into the engine aren't a smart mod in my opinion. At this point in my life I also despise anyone who removes any cats from a car.

I'm reminded of that every time I get behind some clown with obnoxiously loud muffler and acridly smelly exhaust, forcing me to switch my HVAC fan to RECIRCULATE while practicing colorful metaphors in various languages.

I did briefly, but once you do the math, the G70 is a heck of a deal for a sports sedan. I came from a modified 14’ Mustang Gt and I’m very happy with the added horsepower from mods. I gap most stock “performance” vehicle on the road with ease and it’s the surprise factor for me. No one expects a Genesis to be fast and I knew the platform was a bit limited before I purchased so I’m pretty happy. Enjoy the ride and the money you saved until it’s time to upgrade to something with with more headroom for horsepower.

If it were me, I would've chosen a different platform of automobile if you want to beat everyone. I would leave it basically stock. Modifying is an expensive habit and you will not recoup your investment. It's fun, but you need to set your dollar limit before you start.

To answer your question plainly... No regrets. Intake, spark plugs and a Lap3 tune on my 3.3. I probably won't touch exhaust or anything like that. Makes more than enough power to have fun blowing off doors on the autobahn with no speed limiter now.

To kinda piggy back of of most other folks answers...
I think people coming from other sporty cars often forget this is basically a 4000 pound car. The BMW you came from and the Audi you mentioned probably come in about 500 pounds less; HP & torque pound for pound? You'll loose to a similarly powered lighter car almost every time. It's all in the pricing. Korean car manufacturers love steel. Since they own their own steel plants, its cheap, whereas German cars will save weight with more aluminum and composite adhesives where they can... But you gotta pay.

You can probably get more power with a tune alone from any BMW or Audi, and probably for cheaper in general with intakes and maybe new plugs for a cheaper tune cost. Partially because they often underrate (or at least used to) their own power numbers, and they also have a larger modding base which means competition drives tunes and part prices down. With this platform to gain anything more than 465 HP you have to start looking at fuel higher than 93 octane, CPI, meth; or a combination of all that. The price, complexity and upkeep makes it more annoying than worth it except for those dedicated enough.

Fully loaded at about 53K MSRP versus the S4 and M340I xDrive that both start around or above that MSRP and, similarly optioned, cost 8-10K more, give or take. I'm strictly speaking new from the dealer, pre markup BS or tax. I'm sure there are plenty of second hand deals that make this argument invalid.

That's a really good summary, especially considering you are new here. Well done.

Answer to your question: No

Answer to the rest of the words you wrote that's not quite a question, but coming off like a question: If you want performance for the money and to beat most everything out there, buy a Mustang or a GTR.

Listen, there's always someone faster and I think one thing that is not being mentioned is that the cars you're mentioning have been getting supported for a lot longer or more heavily than our platform. If it's any consolation, I've had the same thoughts/wonders and voiced the same questions you posed to a buddy of mine. He also happens to own an S$ that would kick most cars asses.

But here's the thing, the B58 motor is one of the best motors of all time, the B9 platform from Audi has had a huge breakthrough in the last year 2 years and again, the motor has been around for awhile. Also, aside from the Audis, everything else is significantly lighter. One thing that puts us at a disadvantage is the transmission and tuning. There's no way around it. But you will have trade offs.

Which lap3 tune did you get and what are you running for tires? Post a dragy or slip, there might be something that we see in there that can help get you a little faster.

Also, I see you're local to me. If you want to meet up sometime to discuss ideas or whatever, I'm down.
