  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

User manual says 0w-30.
Can I use 5w-30 instead (full synthetic)?
What factory or stocked oil type filled at the factory?
My G70 3.3T engine uses 5w-30 per user manual so I'd like to stick with one type if possible.
BTW, I have always used Mobil1 5w-30 Advanced Full Synthetic for all of my cars in the last 12 years.
I live in Texas.

Interesting here is what Google found.
Genesis recommends using Quaker State products for your replacement oil. If you have the 2.0L Turbo engine, you'll want to use 0W-30 (SAE Viscosity Number) for 6.02 quarts. If you have the 3.3L Twin Turbo engine, you'll want 5W-30 (SAE Viscosity Number) for 7.29 quarts.

I'd like an answer on that too but I've not been able to get it from Genesis. (Hyundai dealer service doesn't have a clue).

I'm wondering if 0w has more to do with maximum fuel economy rather than lubrication considerations.

My only concern with going to 5w is for warranty purposes.

BTW, I've not yet seen a 0w-30 synthetic product from Quaker.

Best price on 0w-30 is linked below:

0W-30 and 5W-30 are interchangeable they are just formulated for slightly different temperatures. On my last oil change the dealer used 5W despite the oil cap/documentation call for 0W so I can’t imagine there would be any warranty implications using one over the other.

Any chance that's in writing from Genesis?

Based on my experience with Hyundai service, the fact that they use 5W would not instill confidence. The incompetence encountered at Hyundai service for oil changes was mind blowing! Fortunately, I'm capable of doing oil changes correctly, (but they're not complimentary )

Don't overthink types of oil to use. There is very little difference between 0W and 5W. As long as its synthetic your good. Brand is irrelevant but it should be an SN oil spec. Oh, the difference in increased fuel economy between the two is near immeasurable.

Why would you not use what specified in the manual and printed on the oil fill cap? Why second guess the people who designed, built, and warranty the engine?

Here it is direct from the dealerships mouth. To be honest I only had this first change done at the dealer to have it on the service record. As soon as I got home I drained it and replaced with Amsoil 0W. Having said that my post above is accurate. The only difference is the blends are formulated for different temp ranges. There is no risk in running either in any but the most extreme edge case.

I understand that the difference under most conditions it's no big deal, but really, the dealer didn't use what the maker specified? That's bizarre.

Why would you replace brand new, perfectly good oil with brand new, perfectly good oil???

I feel like you don't have much experience with Hyundai dealers...

I’m overly particular about the maintenance of my vehicles and I have a healthy distrust of the work the dealership does. Also notice the quantity of oil used on the paperwork. Not only was the weight of the oil slightly off they also overfilled.

I understand the act of replacing new oil might seem odd to most but the peace of mind I now have that everything is as it should be is worth the extra time, the cost and the waste for me.

1st oil change two weeks ago in my local Hyundai/Genesis dealership.
I handed the mechanic 8 quarts of 5w-30 Mobil1FS and I asked him if this is good for the car.
His response was "good stuff to me" and I went on asked him the Genesis specified 0w-30 and his response was this is not a jet engine and the 5w-30 should work wonder under these conditions (I am sure he meant Texas's hot summer weather).

I'd agree that while Genesis specified 0w-30, under a TX summer 5w-30 would work just fine.

Just because they charged for 8 quarts doesn't mean they put 8 full quarts in the engine.
