Looking into buying the 3.8 over the next 2 months, but unfortunately, I won't be able to test drive it :mad:(I live in China, long story...)

So, I'd like to know from anyone that's driven either or both what your preferences are and why?

I've always driven manuals, but from what I've red the 6-speed auto on the
V6 is genuinely quicker and slicker than the manual.

Don't think I can get the paddle shifters here either, so is it possible to hold a gear up the redline and kick the tail out with the auto shifter set to manual?

Manual transmissions are not offered on Genesis sold in North America. (For that matter, I have no idea if they're available on cars sold in Asia or elsewhere, but I've never read about it.)

Of this I am sure, as I much prefer standard transmissions and would have bought one if I could (although, in retrospect, an automatic does seem better suited to this car, which resides on luxury end of the continuum more so than the sporty end).

So you might want to verify that a manual transmission is even an option wherever you intend to buy the car.
 
My dealer (Orlando Hyundai) has/had a Bright Red Coupe, 3.8, with Manual 6-Speed.

Well, duh...the coupe! I'm guilty of being sedan-centric. Frankly, there's so little overlap between the Genesis sedan and Genesis coupe design-wise, marketing/demographics-wise and otherwise, it's a bit of a stretch to lump the two sets of owners together. In fact, wasn't the coupe going to morph into its own forum at one point? Perhaps the numbers didn't justify it. At any rate, sorry for the misleading response.

Dunno, but seeing as the Genesis is one of the only MRMG forums dedicated to a single model of car, I think we're already fairly special :)
 
the auto transmission, on a Genesis Coupe, actually has a "safety" built into it and will still shift on it's own in sports mode. If you get too close to redline it will shift up and if you get too low on the RPM it will shift down.

Well at least that's what I've been reading about the Auto Tranny. I have a manual so I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the quirks of the auto transmission.
 
Get the manual. An automatic, no matter how good it is, doesnt belong in a sports car.
 
Should be picking up my 3.8GT auto sometime this week, so I'll keep you apprised.

Oh, and for all the "stick-only" fanboys on this thread, he was asking which tranny was actually better on the Genesis. Not for your prejudices.

from what i know about the genesis coupe, if you want performance and are looking for an automatic car, make sure it's one of those "double-clutch" automatics like the DSG in the VWs and Audis. otherwise you're compromising performance for leisure. and, because i know the automatic in the GC is nothing similar to the DSG, i give my vote to the manual.

i don't consider the Genesis Coupe to be a "sports car".

i would expect a "sports car" to be able to at least run a mid 13 at the track :rolleyes:

Just to clarify, in any other car, unless we were talking of a double clutch transmission as good as the one in the GT-R, I'd pick the manual.

The thing with the Genesis is that a lot of reviews state the manual gearbox isn't very good; I guess Hyundai just isn't that good at making gearboxes yet. The automatic, however, is made by ZF and is supposedly a very good gearbox....for an automatic.

Most acceleration tests even seem to confirm that the auto is quicker (just slightly) and even more strangely the manual car is heavier.

I like manuals because they allow precise control, they are usually quicker, lighter and it's easier to kick the tail out.

In this case though, since the auto seems quicker, I'd actually consider it if it can actually still allow good levels of car control. (aka, hold gears up to redline, allow you to hold a slide etc.) I know auto's are a pain at slow speeds though, but I ain't buying a gen coupe for ease of parking!

Anyone had a chance to try both?

Depends...Every car is a comprimise. It depends on your demands and expectations of the car. For me...

Daily driver - 3.8 GT in automatic, traffic is a bitch.
Weekend or Fun 2nd car - 3.8 Track model in manual.

Wait what??? there is no way in hell that the manual version is going to be heavier than the automatic transmission. and where did you read that the automatic is faster than the manual. i'd really like to see documentation
 
the 6M tranny is terrible. Man or not, it simply sucks. I know because I have one. Hopefully they improve the manual
