    If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

3.8 V6 low oil pressure at startup. Seems to rattle bad at startup after sitting. Takes several seconds to build oil pressure

Having issues with engine rattling bad upon startup after sitting for an hour or so. Seems to take about 2 full seconds for oil to quiet engine down when started. Tried different oils and additives and hyundai filter with no change. Is there something that could be causing the oil to drain out of the filter and making it take a couple seconds to fill it back up and create the pressure needed when started. Engine sounds fine and works great after that initial jaw clenching engine rattling. I am sure others have experienced this same issue but am hoping someone has found a cure or a cause for the problem. Any ideas??

What weight oil are you using? Also, while common sense, have you checked the oil level recently?

I have the same issue. I have a 3.8 litre engine also. I sat in my friends 2012 Genesis, he has the same issue too. I use Castrol 5w30 full synthetic engine oil. Never figured out why this happens, and always at start up.

If you park in garage and (I assume) your garage floor is flat, then I don't have any ideas.

But, if you park on the driveway, and your driveway is angled (not flat) toward the road, and you park your Genesis with front end toward garage, try to park backwards so your front end is looking toward road and is lower than the rear end, and see if it make the difference.

My driveway is angled from garage to the road like 10-15 degrees. In summer there was no problem starting the car, but in winter it was kinda hard, and I had several scary rattles two winters ago when car couldn't start and all warning lights on the cluster were flashing like crazy. Now I always park backwards so my front end is lower than the rear end.

I don't know where oil pump in Genesis engines is located (my guess it is in the front), but my conspiracy theory is that when the car is parked and front end is higher than the rear end, oil shifts to the back of the pan and level of the oil in the front of the pan is low.

Parking backwards on my driveway made the difference.

Sound like you have a bad timing chain tensioner or some other timing chain related component. The chain tensioner needs oil pressure to properly support the timing chain, however when they age the tensioners take longer to apply enough tension until the oil pressure build up at startup. The problem is that the rattling means that the chain is loose and may jump teeth on the cam gear. I would have a mechanic check it out ASAP before it ruins your engine.

The guy explains it well in this video.

@carguy75

I guess my conspiracy theory didn't work. :)

Thanks 🙏. Really appreciate it. The guy in the video mentions 2 types of rattling noises on startup. Mine possibly is the 1st one he mentions, normal slight rattle on start up, but I definitely will have a mechanic assess it.
