  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

3.8l Poor Gas Mileage

Very glad I found this thread. I just got a job transfer from Houston to Minneapolis and will have to get an AWD car. I'll be driving 30K-40K miles a year, and get mileage reimbursement. Consequently, I have been intently researching the G80 in AWD/3.8 configuration. I was hoping to achieve 25-27 mpg on the highway at 65-70mph with a 3.8 with HTRAC and 87 octane fuel. (I will be forced to drive like a grandma, as my driving is monitored).
With mostly highway you will be very close to that. On long trips I get 25 but that is more like 75 on the highway.

How will you be monitored? Plug in OBD unit? Some insurance companies offer a discount if you plug theirs in but I'd not have one. I'm a sensible driver but still don't want anyone looking over my shoulder.

I did have one about 15 years ago, but I got paid to have it. $400 for 3 months. It did keep my speed down a bit.

My company gives me module that plugs into the OBD - it monitors miles driven, speed, and hard braking/acceleration. I get reimbursed the IRS rate of .58 cents/mile. It works out quite well, so long as you're not driving a hog that takes 93 octane.

You should never go off what the internal computer tells you, 90% of the time it's not AS accurate as you might think it is, it's always better to do your own measuring even if it's a pain in the ass, but you know that will be the most accurate reading you will get.

Also a few suggestions, and i know there will probably be a bunch of controversial comments on this, and everyone has their own opinions on certain things.

But you can add a more air efficient air filter, Full Synthetic Oil, defiantly run your tires at the recommended PSI, get more efficient tires.. just google how to increase your MPG. You're not going to get a crazy amount of increase and it might not even justify the cost of getting a 1% increase... but that all depends on you and what you're looking for.
