  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

1G Genesis Sedan (2009-2014)
Just got the 30K service from the dealership and I feel ripped off. How can they possibly justify over $1,000.00 for this service? I had a 2012 Genesis, same model and remember only paying around $500.00. Do I have to have Hyundai perform the repairs to stay under warranty? Thanks in advance for any help

What did they do for this service? Itemized bill preferable.

You most likely got hosed. Can't say for sure until we see the invoice of what was actually done.

The dealer should have gone over this with you before doing anything. They should do what s recommended by Hyundai in the manual. Some dealers (any brand) will add on stuff just to pump up the bill.

To keep the warranty you only have to do the required service. If you have questions, ask them to show you in the manual, not on their list. Some of the services may be a good idea, but chances are most are just for profit.., You signed an authorization so you may not have much legal ground this time, but certainly a lesson for next time.

Check the manual, make a copy of the maintenance page and take it with you. Question them and do no more that what is called for unless you are having a real problem.

A grand is stiff even if they do virtually all items due at 30k under severe driving conditions. Typical dealer pork.

All you needed was:
Engine Filter (do it yourself)
Cabin Filter (do it yourself)
Change Oil and Filter
Tire Rotation
Fuel Additive (only if you're not using Top Tier, do it yourself).

For 30k, I just had the oil and filter changed. Did the tire rotation at Discount Tire and the rest I did myself. Total was around $120.

All of the INSPECT this or that are automatically done if you bring your car in service. No charge.

You were hosed. I paid about $450 and felt hosed. I have my own K&N filters for oil and cabin.
So for an oil change and "cleaning of fuel injection system" and a car wash, I felt taken advantage of.

They paid for a cheap oil and at best, dumped in some Chevron fuel injection cleaner worth $20.
They gave me the car back with underinflated tires and half the engine cowling push-pins missing or broken.
DEALER SERVICE AT IT'S NORM

That is not acceptable

It's a learning experience. When I had my Acura RL, I had the same happen to me.

I asked my dealer for oil change only, I even bring my own oil. They try to add bunch of BS stuff (even coolant replace wtf?) so it's only around 25 bucks for oil change and filter lol. I have lifetime rotation at DT, filter change by me every year.

So I'm at like 28500 miles now got the car around 26k. What should I expect to be done and what should I decline?

Commented on above.

Same here, Tuan. Dealer wants $99.95 for a synthetic oil change! I buy the same oil they use (Pennzoil 5W-20 Full Synthetic) at Wal-Mart ($22.68 per 5 quart bottle) and bring it to them for the change/filter (charged $24.95). That way, I have documentation for any warranty claims.

There is a page in the manual that describes the service to be done. Section 7. Decline anything not mentioned. Make a copy of the page and don't hesitate to pull it out and question anything they recommend. I'd post it here bit it does not copy and paste well.

Oil change, cabin filter change, everything else is just inspected. You may or may not need brakes or wiper blades. You do NOT need fuel injection cleaning, hub caps polished. radio tuned or anything else they suggest. They are looking to make profit

As with many things, caveat emptor.

I do not begrudge service departments for asking or pushing for all they can. Service is probably the most vital revenue source and profit center, so they're just getting what they can. It's up to the consumer to make sure he/she is well-informed and can make appropriate, well-reasoned decisions in terms of accepting or declining offered services.
