As several people have mentioned, the key to MP3 and ACC (Apple proprietary format) is the bit rate. For a system the quality of the Lexicon, 256 bps is recommended. Unfortunately the default bit rate when you convert your CD's using iTunes to MP3 or ACC (iPod default) is much lower, and most down-loadable music is only available at a lower bit rate.
I do a lot of critical listening of AAC files converted from CD's at 256 bps using a Sennheiser 580 headphone and a Creek headphone amp, and I think most Genesis owners would be satisfied with MP3 and AAC at that bit rate.
