32GB USB Drive

As several people have mentioned, the key to MP3 and ACC (Apple proprietary format) is the bit rate. For a system the quality of the Lexicon, 256 bps is recommended. Unfortunately the default bit rate when you convert your CD's using iTunes to MP3 or ACC (iPod default) is much lower, and most down-loadable music is only available at a lower bit rate.

I do a lot of critical listening of AAC files converted from CD's at 256 bps using a Sennheiser 580 headphone and a Creek headphone amp, and I think most Genesis owners would be satisfied with MP3 and AAC at that bit rate.

The Genesis audio system will not play AAC format (iProd default). There are some AAC to MP3 converters you can get (I think I posted a link to one in another thread).

Of course the audio system will play AAC on an iPod through the iPod interface, but not on a flash drive.

I was wondering if all you guys keep your ipod/usb drive/hard drive connected all the time, or do you disconnect before starting the car or turning it off? I believe I remember reading in the manual that said one should remove the device before doing the above.

I also started with a USB key but after my experiments I just bought a 1.8" drive with 120GB. The power requirements of these drives is so low that you can drive them directly from a USB port. Even at 325Kbit/s encoding this should make for a lot of music. I will post an update when I receive the hardware and it all works.

Has anyone else tried this yet: connecting a USB powered hard drive? This seems like an attractive option to me due to the lower cost per gigabyte but I'd like to be sure that the Genesis can provide the power at the jack for a hard drive. Of course, since it can power an iPod there the answer is probably yes.

I keep my flash drive plugged in at all times.

The only issue I have is when I select "random track", it tends to freeze after a couple songs. When I play in normal mode, it never freezes.

As I poined out in my original post, the drive 1.8" drive model I used for this project lies within the power budget of a USB port.

Most 2.5" drives exceed that power budget.

Also make sure you read my full post since the software in the Genesis is quite buggy and you need to be prepared to deal with that. The sound is great and having 900 albums a 320kbps at your fingertips is pretty cool.

Except when the stupid software can't do random on more than about a dozen albums. I've stopped using mine because I got tired of listening to the same 12 albums out of over 1000.

After reading all of the posts I took a 160gig Passport backup drive and cleaned off all of the pre-loaded stuff. Then I took and transferred about 10gig of music I had ripped to my Notebook and put in on the Passport drive.

Plugged it into my USB port and works like a champ. You can read the Name of the Album (Folder) as well as individual songs. Unlike playing CD's that show nothing, just Disk 1 and song 1, 2.......

Drive shuts down when key is turned off and starts up with restart of engine (accessory). Even starts playing where it left off. Drives are less then a $100.00 at Micro Center. I want one of these for my truck. Thanks for all of the posts.
