  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just checked with the dealer and they want $430 to replace the plugs in my GF's Sonata LX V6 which runs awesome and has 60,000 miles on it. Wow little spendy but, I know I can either do it myself, or find a non-dealer to do it for less so I'm not worried.

Can't imagine what the Genesis V8 costs for plugs:eek::D

Just curious why you'd replace the plugs given the low mileage and when the car's running fine?

Warranty reasons. Manual states to replace plugs at this mileage as well as the dealer.

If you replace them yourself, assuming you can get the the rear bank, be extra careful that you don't break a plug.

That $430. charge may be for more than just changing the plugs. It may be for a full 60,000 mile service. If just for plugs, check with another dealer, or a non-dealer shop.

I really don't know about problems with any of the Hyundai's, however, being a "Ford Man", I can tell you that the plugs in the 4.6 Ford engines can and do break. (The problem is mostly in the 3v, not the 4v or 2v 4.6 engines. The reason is carbon builds up around the threads of the plugs (or the threads in the head) and the plugs can't be turned to remove them. Fords "fix" for this is to soak the sparkplug well, with carburator cleaner, (or stuff just like carb cleaner) and let it sit, soaking, for a few hours, then to work the plug back and forth, until it comes out. (I guess it does not matter if you have a dealer do it, because if a plug does break, even at the dealer, they will charge you to remove the head to fix the problem <darn>.

Keep us informed.

I'll have to check if that was the 60,000 mile service or just the plugs.

I'll keep everyone informed:)

So, I guess the intake manifold has to be removed to do the plugs according to the dealer and a local shop. I haven't looked at it myself yet, but I'm sure their correct.

Local shop quoted $350, so $80 less than the dealer. Anyone have any other ideas besides a crappy Midas etc.?
