  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

5.0 R-Spec: Why so rare?

Even more rare than the R-Spec is the 5.0 2012 NON R-Spec (yes, that was a thing).

Yes, several R-spec or even 2015 5.0 ultimate model can be found on autotrader in a wide search area or even a nationwide search, but not many in a local area such as in the Atlanta metro areas.

The cars in question are not impossible to find, just not as common as the other Genesis models. I could find only one R-spec in a 50 miles radius in my area out of 10 total V8 Genesis models(including 2015 Genesis 5.0 models) available on Autotrader. Most of the 2015 5.0 model listed in the search were not Ultimate models.

Exactly right. It's just a known fact it's a low volume built and sold trim. It's only what...2012 to 2014 as well. Small window of time and production let alone any demand for em.
I kinda like that though. We have a "rare" car. Atleast an un common car to say the least. It's a great niche car at a great price. I had a big hard on for a lexus V8 sedan but was always priced out at 2 times the cost of a great genny. I think they will definitely hold some sort of good value in a few years. Gotta always celebrate a great 5.0 naturally aspirated V8 RWD sedan.

My R-Spec story is a bit ironic and if you believe in them, a meant to be story. I have been interested in buying a Genesis sedan for years and I didn’t really know there was an R-Spec until this year. (Just didn’t put a whole lot of thought into the different models) I started searching them and found them of course but I noticed they weren’t plentiful. Once I knew what they were I decided that’s the one I want (eventually)
1st week of December I pointed one out to my wife while on the highway. She gave her approval more or less. Very next week I checked Kelly Blue Book sight and low and behold, 2014 white with tan R-Spec with 74,150 miles just 35 minutes away. 3 days later it’s in my driveway. I had no idea they are as fast as they are, infreakincredible. Due to its sophistication’s, I’m pretty sure it would give my 440hp Bandit Trans Am a very hard time.
So as far as the R-Specs being somewhat rare, glad I was able to get my hands on one

Why are these so rare? The only 5.0 R-Spec I've seen "in the wild" is the one that I am driving!

I have seen more Chevy SS's on the road then Genesis R-Spec Sedans. Did they just not sell as many of them because of the market?
Just look around you on the road. How many Genesis do you see on a given day? How many Chevy, Ford, Toyotas, etc. do you see? Even today I see very few of any Genesis compared to other Hyundai and other car makers. In the day of the R-Spec very few sold by comparison. If you asked the man on the street they would reply "never heard of Genesis". Some still do.

You are so right EdP, I'm just new with the Genesis and I'm very surprised with how many people have a look at this car, and wonder what it is. Just the other day one G80 passed me on the road, compared to all the other brands of autos that you see. Sometimes I think I have the only Genesis in Ontario, but then I come back to reality.

There's at least one more..... :)

I've seen some Genesis sedan's, coupe's and G's but not another R-spec yet.

When I was looking at buying, I bought the only car-fax verified accident free R-spec in Ontario for sale at the time. Even then there were only a half dozen or so R's for sale across the whole of Canada.

I live near the 3 way border of MS, TN and AL and I own the only 5.0 R-Spec I've ever seen in person. I've seen 1 other Genesis this body style but it was a V6 car and I have seen a later model V6 RWD Genesis sedan. I had this one shipped in from 5 hrs away near Atlanta.

I enjoyed my white 2012 R-Spec for three years, but decided to go AWD with my 2015 5.0 - it was a great car (but all 4 of my Genesis sedans have been awesome). Enjoy!!
I still have my 2012 R-Spec and just hit 176,000 miles. Other than oil burn it's perfect.... Well perfect for a 9 year old car. I am considering giving Genny to my son (wife says.. not while she's breathing) and getting a 2018 G80 Sport... How do you like your 2016?

I worry the suspension will end up being to soft and with the upgrades I have done the G80 will seem less like a sport Sedan. I have had this R-Spec to long... I've done minor upgrades... removed secondary CATs, replaced resonator with "X" pipe, and mufflers with MagnaFlow Exhaust. At 160K miles I replaced the rims, tires (245/45 R19) plugs, coils, shocks, and struts. The rotors and pads with E-Line slotted and drilled Rotors and Performance Ceramic Pads.

Well Steve - if you are ever in the Nashville area might see one -- same color as yours. Will hit 52K miles today.

Cool, mine will be turning 76,000 in the next few weeks. Last time I went to Nashville was for a torque converter for a truck I used to have, if I'm ever up that way again I'll be looking out for you.

Even that doesn't guarantee it's the Rspec. Some people de-badged their cars (including myself) some of them could slap on Rspec badges on non-Rspec cars.

You will never know till you pop the hood. :)
That was so hilarious dareckibmw Really??!!

thats why i love my rspec not only that its paid off lol, its rare and when i go to the track it surprise everyone not only that its pretty fast, they get surprised that its a 2012.

Yeah I don't get this. I mean it was the wheels, the badge, and maybe some interior badges and differences that made it an R-Spec in the first place (rather than a non-RSpec 5.0). The RSpec was $1000 more than the non-RSpec 5.0. If you're going to replace the wheels and de-badge, why get the RSpec in the first place? I think there might have been some minor suspension tuning differences as well, but nothing you couldn't get aftermarket.

the Rspec will have smoke chrome like a black tint headlight housing and the others have chrome thats one way to see if its a rspec or just call the dealer and run the vin. you can look under car rspec also has thicker front and rear sway bars. the non rspec 5.0 stock has a really mushy ride and tons of body roll. to me the non rspec was pointless.

I hated the R-Spec wheels; if it had had different wheels stock, I would have bought one. Also having owned a 2010 V8, I didn't trust Hyundai USA's tuning. They severely screwed up the handling on the US pre-2012 Genesis sedan. So yeah, we can agree to disagree on the R-Spec being pointless.

Since I bought my Gen 5 moths ago, I've seen one R-spec in my neck of the woods and 2 other Genny Sedans in a couple of parking lots (one base 3.8 and one premium 3.8). No other Tech 3.8's and just the one R-spec I've seen once. There are a few available in the Ontario Canada region but high mileage which I wasn't looking to get into. On a 6 hour trip (including the return) out east I saw one other Gen the entire time. Genesis is already a rare enough car. But the R-spec is even more so due to sales. It's basically a limited production run of an already low volume vehicle. So, rare it is! I'm good with that.

Agree ! Only a 2 year run 12-14 don't see them everyday.

If you don't own a 2013 or 2014 R Spec V8 Sedan you may want to consider upgrading to one and moving on from the 2012 with less options and accessibility It's a beautiful thing Even in comparison to a 500 Mercedes Sedan I will run with the R Spec V8 Sedan any day
