  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone.

I own a 2014 Equus Signature and since day one I was having a lot of issues with acceleration. The car is not smooth and feels like it shudders while shifting through gears.

Its been to the dealer at least 10 times as the service department is determined to figure out what is going on. We've gone as far as having the Hyundai regional rep and a corporate engineer review my case. They both took my car for a test drive.

Through the flow of information back to me they determined the car is operating as designed.

AFTER THAT STATEMENT I DECIDED TO TRY ANOTHER DEALERSHIP!

The new dealership also confirmed that my car shudders while accelerating. (they didn't know the back story to my car, yet)

After our test drive we decided to take a brand new Equus off the showroom floor for a test drive.... Believe it or not, the new 2016 was worse than my car.

The service manager and head shop forman both commented that they would never buy this car (the new 2016 we drove) because it was terrible. They described the sensation we all felt as torque converter "hunting".

Has anyone else felt this in their V8 Genesis or Equus.

The first dealer also test drove another Equus and also said that car did the same thing.

I can't believe they would engineer a car to act this way. It is very noticeable.

I have a '14 Equus with 32K miles, and report no problems whatsoever with acceleration.
BUT, I had a '12 Genesis RSpec (same driveline basically), which had lots of transmission problems-all related to abrupt shifting up and/down. There are many service bulletins on this transmission, most of which are unread by dealers. So, ask dealer to review all TSBs. In my case it was first thought to be a faulty "pressure sensor", which controls shift smoothness. New pressure sensor did not cure problem. Then a "warranty transmission", which is a remanufactured transmission. This did not work either. Then, I received a phone call from a Regional VP of Hyundai who said that he would fix this whatever it took. There was but one brand new transmission in all N. America which he said he'd FedEx to dealer. But if he could not "find" this transmission he would pull one off the assembly line in Korea. He found the transmission in St. Louis and overnited it to Santa Fe, NM where I was "stuck". That fixed the problem and I drove home to Salem, OR. All this took about 12 days, during which time I was conincidentally immobilized because of emergency detached retina surgery. A few days after I got home a Hyundai Customer Service rep called me and offered to pay my living expense during the 12 day delay ($2300), even though I was so delayed by my surgery.
My point is that Hyundai Customer Service is very responsive, and I encourage you to persist and persist.

I've been driving my new-to-me 2014 with 8k miles for the last 6 weeks and honestly I feel the hard downshifting a lot. There's a particularly hard downshift going into the lowest gear when I am almost at a stop. Never have I driven a car with such noticeable downshifting. It just feels very unrefined and jerky. I've had a new Elantra and Sonata for service loaners/rentals and neither felt like this, nor did the 2002 Lexus LS430 that I've driven since 2007. With a modern 8spd auto I shouldn't feel a thing.

I asked the dealer to check it out, the tech drove it and said that it's just the way the Equus is. Find it hard to believe the designers would be ok with this. Anyone experienced the same or know any updates?

I have a non-CPO 2012 Equus, which I bought with about 25k miles. I immediately noticed the same thing - hard downshifts, and hard upshifts in 2-3 and 4-5 shifts. It seemed to only really show up when the car was hot, and/or had been driven a few miles. In other words, when I left the house in the morning, it drove fine. by the time I got to my destination, and hour and some highway miles later, it was shifting terribly. When I'd get in the car to drive home, it would be fine, till I got close to home, and then it would be terrible for the last few miles and start/stops.

Ultimately, I took it to the dealership, and they were amazing. Even though I bought the car non-CPO, from a nobody-dealer out of state, they honored the default 6y/60k warranty, and replaced the entire transmission with a new one. Very similar story to above, in terms of availability of rebuilds, vs factory new transmissions. They ended up using a factory new transmission. I've now got almost 70k on the car, and it's been running flawlessly.
