5w-30 vs 5w-40

I recently bought my first genesis and i love this car. But I'm getting due for an oil change and everywhere I look there seems to be a big debate on 30 vs 40 weight without any clear difference. I don't normally drive my car hard normally get getting up to speed on the highway or getting away from some bad driver. But is there any real impact between the two?

I have 163,000 miles on my 2011 4.6 V8 Genesis and since new I have used 5w30 Valvoline Synpower synthetic oil. IMO 5w40 synthetic is over kill for the Genesis. BTW my car has never used oil at all and I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I do use 0w40 in my 6.2L AMG.

There are numerous threads here about this (search it) and some very interesting and thought provoking posts.

But because I hate replies on "friendly" sites that simply blow-off newcomers, I'll give you a short version of things to consider:

1. Your climate might matter (might, being the operative word here).
2. The GC recommendations range from 5W-20 (my 2013 2.0T model's recommendation), 5W-30, to 5W-40. Some folks even advocate 0W-20/30

There are so many other things that I could have listed (including brand wars, lol), but I'd truly advise that you actually search/read those posts/threads and decide for yourself. In the end, it'll be your driving habits (proper warm-up of a turbo engine before fully engaging, etc.,) that will make the biggest difference in your engine's longevity. I'm guessing you live in MA? If so, I'd use 5W-20 (or 30) and never look back.

Again, just don't start your car, put it in gear and go.... without proper warm-up for a turbo engine.

5w30 is more expensive than 5w40 and 5w30 has a lower viscosity than 5w40. Your choice will depend on the temperature where you live.

Where do you live? The choice between 5w30 and 5w40 oil for your car depends on the weather temperature in your area. I use 5w30 for my car but it's more expensive than 5w40. Some good for here: 5w30 vs 5w40: Determining Which Motor Oil is Right for Your Car .
