  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I recently came into three 5 L jugs of Castrol synthetic 5w 50. I know the owner's manual calls for 5 W 30 oil, I'm just wondering if anyone has ever used this 5w 50 grade in their Genesis? I have a 2013 3.8 sedan. Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations

That seems like a really bad idea. Oil pressure will go way up (maybe opening some bypass valves), and flow to the smaller passages at the cams and such will go way down.

do not use. 50w viscosity will not flow as well and could create issues

Thanks guys I appreciate all the feedback I'll definitely not use the 5 w50. It's too bad because I got it all for free but I'll pass it on to someone who can use it. Do you guys use 5w 30? I have heard that some use 5 w20. I just got the car a few months ago so I don't have a preference yet

If you mixed 5W20 and 5W50 do you get 5Wxx?

I'd use it to add a quart between changes but not straight. In the past though, I had a couple of beater cars where I intentionally used heavier oil because of the leaks and burning.

I use 5w-30 in my 2015 5.0. The owners manual and oil cap states 5w-20, however the owners manual also states that 5w-30 can be used for better engine protection in warmer climate areas. I live in Georgia so 5w-30 for my engine. My engine runs great with it; quiet and smooth operating.

I probably lost about a couple mpg with the thicker 5w-30 oil over the thinner 5w-20.

I looked online and it says that 5w 50 oil is better for high revving engines and also for operating under extreme temperatures and conditions such as Towing. I would have used the 5w50 in my 2001 Mustang GT that I just sold but not sure I would use it in this V6.

I used 15-50 in my Harley. Have not seen 5-50 oil before? If you know any Harley riders they might take the oil off your hands. In colder climate areas 5-50 might work just fine for engines needing 50w oil. I agree with others that running 50w in an engine designed for 30w will push pressures up some. My air cooled twin mower engine can use 50w. I’m finishing up using my 15-50 oil in that for I no longer have the Harley.

50 weight is pea soup. Avoid it.
