  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi Just bought 2012 Genesis 3.8 base model one owner 44k miles CPO ... Love the way it holds the road. I saw a post here with photos about a clever fella making a lever device to pull the shift knob off .. I did same ...thanks for idea....replaced mine with new OEM
Getting to my question: When traveling at only about 45 miles per hour I push the shifter to manual and see the car shows to be in 8th gear....rpm around 1100. Thats very low rpm but I did not think the car would already be in 8th gear. Getting 18.2 miles per gallon around town which seems ok. Does this make sense to you all ? ...That car is already in 8th at such low speed? (by the way glad I bought the platinum extended warranty as I have read here that the tranny could be a problem......any idea at what mileage? Thanks, Henry

Hyundai introduced their brand new 8-speed transmission in the Genesis sedan with model year 2012. There were an above average number of problems in the early 2012 transmissions, and a fair number of them were replaced under warranty. Since you have a CPO, yours should also be under warranty.

Search for other threads on transmissions problems to see what symptoms others noticed, and go to your dealer and firmly ask them to correct the problem or replace the transmission under warranty. Do your homework before you discuss with the dealer and let them know that many others had their transmission replaced. If you get pushback from the dealer, and you think you are right, contact HMA and open a case with them.

I have a 5.0 with 8-speed and see the same. Although I drive in ECO mode most of the time, and aim for best MPG. I would suspect that non-ECO mode would hold the gear longer, especially under load. Enjoy your Geni

The ECO indicator is simply that, an indicator. If you give the car more than a minimum amount of throttle, the light comes on. Unlike some other cars, it does not affect the car in any other way.

Thanks for responses! I feel better now that I hear that SixFootSix ALSO sees his tranny in 8th gear when in auto shift mode and only traveling at 45 mph.....I am guessing that's how the big car gets pretty good fuel economy as the engine only turning at about 1100 rpm. I have no issues with the car...yet but will watch and stay informed. Thanks, Henry

Don't let Mark alarm you. He has no idea how many '12 transmissions have failed. My '12 8spd tranny is the best I've ever had in any car. Anywho, with your CPO warranty you are covered for a long time.

Yes, perfectly normal. The 3.8 is a heavy car, so adding some air to your tires may improve mpg a bit.
