  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Today was a great day until my wife got home. Was laying sod in my yard and decided to move the Genesis to the other side of the driveway so the sprinkler didn't dump water on it as I watered in the sod. I moved the car and got out only to see a massive puddle of oil sitting where I had just moved the car from. I looked under car and saw a pretty signficant drip of oil (a drop a second). It's crazy since she had just gotten home in the Genesis 20 minutes earlier and did not notice any oil leak at work (40 miles away).

I did not want to drive it with it leaking like that so I called Hyundai Roadside and had them tow it to the dealership. The covers underneath looked to be in good shape so I don't think we did anything to cause it. We did get the oil changed a couple weeks ago. Hope it is something simple. What a way to start the Memorial Day weekend. At least I can be glad we decided to cancel our trip to Destin as we would have been on our way to the panhandle otherwise.

Who changed the oil? Filter should always be OEM and the filter canister requires new O rings. Also the drain pug requires a new crush washer at every change.

Dealership changed it.

Keep us updated on what was cause.

Amen:

Although, if the party who did the filter/oil change caused the prob., the truth may be a little elusive.

I sold an almost new Sonata to a relative a few years back - he burned out the engine after a botched oil/filter job caused all the oil to run out. Maybe partly the relative's fault - he was a klutz with mechanical things.

That sucks man.

She sure does look good though, even on the flat bed.

Dealership changed it.
Possible reasons for dealer screw-up:
  • not tightening the drain plug
  • not tightening the oil filter, or not installing O-rings correctly
Unfortunately, dealer screw-ups on an oil change is amazingly common.

Did you check the dipstick level before the tow truck came?

No. I didn't even attempt to drive it (or even start it) after seeing all that oil in the driveway. It was a lot. I know it runs as it seemed completely normal and there were no idiot lights on the dash and that was good enough for me. I hope it is something like a dealer mistake as seeing the 5.0 oil leak thread has me scared that we will be without our car for an extended period of time.

When the front end got punched by some truck retread, we were without our baby for almost three weeks and rode around in a Lincoln Navigator rental. Nice enough SUV but can't touch our Genesis.

Forget "idiot lights".

If the mechanic screwed up the oil/change filter change - he does the job over.

Probably a 30 minute fix at most.

The so-called "cartridge" filter set-up on Hyundai's is a bad design, in my opinion - I can do it ok, experience pays off - but the mechanics don't really care all that much about your car. My previous "big car" - a Ford Taurus - had a "spin-on" filter up front - you reached in up front at the bottom, wrenched it off, put a new one on, and you were done.

No filter housings, no filter caps, no O-rings to lubricate and replace - totally idiot-proof -- well, almost. And, it was right up next to the radiator with no splash shields to remove.

I almost forgot, on Hyundai's, when they say the "crush washers" have to be replaced - they mean it. And 25 ft-lbs won't do it. Clean everything thoroughly, and torque that pan bolt up with a T-bar until you hear a little screeching noise. Torque wrenches - well, maybe.

You don't have to start the engine to check the oil dipstick level. In fact you should never check it while the engine is running.

The purpose of checking the oil level is to determine whether your car lost enough oil to possibly damage the engine. The dealer will likely claim (even if not true) that the engine was not damaged.

The idiot light is usually oil pressure only, and not oil level.

See page 7-27, Owner's Manual. Run engine - warm up - shut off - check after 5 minutes cool down.

In my case, I check the oil to see if it is at the proper level - not for engine damage. But, who knows?

If you let it go??

Ok... There is another recent comment in a post about a major and serious oil leak. Something about a gasket around the back of the motor that out of the factory was not installed correct. Some kind of plate covering around the transmission and the back of the intake. The dealer found the issue, ran a bore scope into the intake area, found a huge puddle in there, and then found this plate leaking massive oil. So, may or may not be the dealer issue changing the oil. According to the person who made the post, it came on sudden..

FYI, just in case.

Was that other post about a 5.0 or 3.8. OP in this thread has 3.8.

Good point.. Not sure..I seem to remember 5.0... I did not sweat the detail...

The recent oil change seems suspicious to me. But I guess we will find out soon from OP.

Yep.. Agree.

GENNY IS BACK!!!

It turns out that the O-ring on the drain plug split. While we have put nearly a 1000 miles on the car since the oil change, it seems oil pressure over time worked it over and caused it to fully split. I got a lot of "we're very sorry" and complimentary this and that. I'm just glad that it wasn't anything that required a long shop stay and that it gave up in in the way that it did so there was no engine damage was done from oil starvation.

Sorry for the drama but I share things with my Genesis family. :)

Woot woot.. Glad it all worked out!

Had that happen with my Volkswagen, had the dealer send a tech to my home to clean up all the oil from garage floor and driveway

That would have been cool had they offered. I took care of that myself last night though.
