91 or 93

I recall driving north on I35, Austin to Dallas. It was a late fall day and a cold front was expected to blow into the area.

Boy, did it ever... it must have been a 25-30 mph headwind that hit me, and it lasted quite a while. My cruise control was set to 70-something on my boxy Honda Pilot and the SUV downshifted into 3rd to maintain the speed setting. The vehicle buffeted wildly in the wind and the tachometer sat just over 3,000 rpm for maybe 15 second - which seemed like forever. It needed that power to maintain the cruise control setting.

Not sure but max 10% on all 3.

Retarding timing reduces power. On the factory programming, the ECU is not retarding timing even on 87. At least in lower temperatures.
Doesn’t Octane only affect HP?
Torque will remain unchanged as far as I know especially if the engine makes most of it down low!

I’m totally confused. If the official answer from Genesis saids that the 3.3t engine is designed to run on 87 octane but the manual saids 91 or higher, what is the answer?

It will affect both hp and torque

87 is fine, 91 recommended. In high heat the ecu may pull more timing on 87.

Anyone have the 2020 G80 Owners Manual? It's not online, oddly.

This is from the 2019 G80 manual. I doubt it changed. It does not say that 91 is recommended. The 5.0 does, but only for better (and it would be minimal) performance, but not the 3.3.

Interesting. 91 or higher octane is usually recommended in turbo-charged engines; even with direct injection. My 5.0 engine really does seem to run stronger with 93 octane than with 87 octane; so the manual is spot on in recommending 91 or higher for better performance in the V8.

However, I am surprised the 3.3T is not even being recommended to use 91 or higher octane. I guess the stock tune does not allow the engine to fully adapt to the extra octane pass 87.
