A quick overview of what I have leaned about fixing some problems with the Genesis 2015 Sedan

Genesis Model Type
2G Genesis Sedan (2015-2016)
I have owned this vehicle since 2015. This vehicle is techinically called a 2015 Sedan. Later they called the older model of this vehicle as G80, but it is not really called G80 its called 2015 Sedan. I am extremely pleased with this vehicle. The battery is very easy to replace they stock them at the dollar tree CR2032. You take the key out of fob then you take a screw driver not at the key hole in the fob but at the other side between the two plastric nubs one of the plastic nubs is a a pointy rectangle and the other is a triangle. When he twist a flat screw driver here the fob will start to pop open then go do the same at the outside on same side of the keyfob. Then to remove the battery just insert a small metal tool on the edge of the battery close to the edge of the key fob. And then insert the battery first at the outer edge of the fob and it will snap in on the metal contact side. Genesis has a nice picture of how to open this keyfob. If you don't do it right it just tears the inside of the keyfob. If you battery is completely dead we are told that you can start the car if you contact the keyfob with the start switch. You can open the door by removing key from Keyfob and the driver door small part that is posterior to the door handle. You can pull this piece off with your hand and then insert the key. Also if trunk latch breaks there is a keyhole to open the trunk. The trunk latch can be removed and replaced. When the actuator starts breaking it will be harder and harder to open the switch. Also the rubber piece that covers the trunk switch wears out and can be easily ordered and replaced. You can decrease your risk of vehicle theft and extend the life of your vehicle battery by keeping you keyfob inside of a special feyfob pouch when you park the car, that can be purchased on Ebay for less than $20.00. This will prevent the signal from you keyfob from transmitting to the vehicle and being stolen at night by car thieves at your front door. They have an antenna and can copy the signal and then start your car in less than 2 minutes and drive your car away if you have it parked in front of your house at night. Your fob will be needed to be removed from this pouch to start the car. They also can use your obd port to plug into your car. You can easily install a little metal plate over the obd port and screw in with a security screw. These screws can be easily removed for service, but could prevent theft because the theives only have seconds to bypass your alarm by plugging into this port. Also if you are having backup camera problems, its probably due to
wire chaffing a inside the trunk just in front of the passenger side trunk support arm, this rubs on wiring and causes a short here. You must remove the trunk liner and lid liner to expose this wire and then some basic wire splicing replacing with heat solder wire splice kits to fix the shorts can permantly fix this problem. Also a wire kit can be purchased from mypremium key.com one can remote start this vehicle without subscription cost. The 3 g support for this service will cease for this vehicle 12-2023. This my premium key kit plugs into the existing security key system with multiple clip in plugs, no wire splicing required. The cost of this system is about $400. After these connections are made your existing remote will be able to remote start the vehicle by pressing the lock button on your existing remote 2 times in a row. The range of this will work at the exactly the same range as your current keyfob remote range. By replacing your battery this range will be maximized. If you have electrical problems with this vehicle that can prevent it from being driven or shifting you will need to the direct service department to a main rear of the vehicle main wiring harness. Firestone has great tires for this vehicle and usually has
newer manufactured tires that you can verify by there dates. The dealer installs interstate batteries for his vehicle and will not charge more than anyone else to replacement the battery. My first battery on this vehicle did not last very long because it was stored for sometime on a lot before I purchased in used. Now that I drive my car very week and keep my keyfob in a keyfob pouch you can buy on ebay for less than $20.00 my interstate battery is performing great after longer than 5 years.

The fast way to remove the damaged rubber cover is to fold back the interior liner as best you can, remove the camera and anything you can from behind the rubber. Use a 1/2" drill to gouge out the cover in three corners. You will destroy the cover and the switch. After vacuuming the debris from the demo, lube the hole and the new switch with silicone spray, and gently push the new switch in place, front side first. Put the camera and the interior parts back in place and your trunk will again be water proof for another three years.
When I do this again I will take some pictures to share.

The fast way to remove the damaged rubber cover is to fold back the interior liner as best you can, remove the camera and anything you can from behind the rubber. Put the camera and the interior parts back in place and your trunk will again be waterproof for another three years.

Oops, I did this on my blue ultimate today, but forgot to take pictures. It appeared it might have been done previously. This time I removed all the rivets to take the liner entirely out. This went very smoothly; I had the spare plastic rivets and all the required tools on hand. I did not have to drill out the corners like I did on my first attempt, instead I used a 1/8" flat tip driver to pop off the six clips from the underside, some silicone spray to keep the portal slippery, and a small amount of pressure to push the damaged one out. I did not remove the camera until the subassembly was in my hand. I transferred the camera to the new switch, wiped on the silicone and very gently installed the inner left corner. I worked the new rubber edge with my fingers until only the right side protruded, then increased the pressure to slide the right side in place. This was a breeze compared to my first attempt. If our third car trunk switch fails, I can anticipate completing the task in less than 20 minutes. This job should have a tech bulletin and a ten-year warranty. We are all replacing these switches because of Hyundai's poor choice of inferior materials. They post recalls for brake fluid labels and fuse ratings, while every trunk switch disintegrates.

Do you work for a Genesis/Hyundai dealer, I see you are not too far away from me ?.
 
I am currently experiencing the trunk wiring harness issue. I have an extended warranty so I am bringing it in to the dealership. Is this considered a defect that they would charge to fix?

Seems like a poor design/quality issue and not a normal maintenance issue.

Generally, there is a charge to fix any defect out of warranty. There are some exceptions for defects with major affects on safety. This wouldn't be that.
 
Do you work for a Genesis/Hyundai dealer? I see you are not too far away from me.
I no longer work as a full-time automotive technician. I still have some shop equipment and skills.
I have not always been satisfied with the service from Hyundai dealers, so I attempt my own repairs.
 
I would expect the extended warranty to cover repair of the broken wires since it is an original defect. I would not recommend replacing the entire wiring harness which is a BIG job, more risk, and unnecessary.

Currently having a horrible experience with the dealership trying to get this fixed.

I got the car around 8 months ago and got the extended warranty through Hyundai. Platinum level - everything covered until 100K/2026.

Brought the car in a few weeks ago for a "Taillight Out" appointment. I told the service advisor that the trunk wiring was the problem. Of course the disagree and come back saying that there is a wiring short somewhere. They told me I need to come back so they have time to pull a bunch of wires out of the trunk.

A few weeks later I brought the car back in. This time I used the "Electrical Diagnostics" appointment which blocks off more time. I included the service bulletin number when I booked the appointment. The service advisor also printed it out. I left the dealership thinking this is going to be quick and easy. Hyundai's service bulletin has approved work instructions, requires simple parts, and specifies the work takes 0.6 man hours. About 30 minutes after leaving, the dealership contacts me saying my car is out of warranty. After an hour of back and fourth they were finally able to pull up my warranty. At this point they say they can no longer do the repair because they do not have enough time.

So now I have wasted 4 hours, had to leave work early twice, and all I have to show for it is some insulation crumbles in my trunk and some fasteners they forgot to put back in.

I have a 2014-2015 V6 RWD 'Ultimate' trim Australian model. My rubber boot (trunk) button is fine. The car is stored in a garage and Melbourne, Victoria, Australia is a pretty medium/temperate climate rarely getting below 0 deg (32f) on winter nights or 45 deg (110f) on hot summer days. Come to think of it the button is rarely used as we use the remote or internal button or the 3 beeps and open. But two things that have caused minor irritation are 1) the chrome oval surround on the transmission stick wearing away and 2) the rubber coating on the RES/SET cruise control knob/roller tearing off. (It's quite thick on the leaver bit that sticks out and this has torn off.) I have the piece but any glue I try just doesn't work: tried rubber cement and B5000 glue. Both of these issues are likely caused by skin acid as I rest my hand on the top of the stick and have my thumb on the cruise control constantly in normal driving now (Speed cameras!). Any tips appreciated. I've "fixed" the transmission stick knob issue by cutting a defined line halfway down the chrome surround oval and removing the remaining chrome on the top half, leaving the gloss black there, and the chrome on the bottom half which actually looks a bit purposeful as opposed to wear and tear. But for the cruise control knob/roller, short of replacing it, I'm not sure what to do. I was thinking of trying a silicon type glue on the cruise control knob but don't want to ruin it. Thoughts?

I think there is a song about people like that. Was it Denis Leary? I don't trust the dealership anymore ever since they said they'd give me a free, brake test, front end alignment and wheel (tire) rotation. Check-in guy looked confused when I chuckled. So I had to explain you can't rotate the wheels or tyres as the back are a different size to the front. He didn't bat an eyelid announcing that "You can still rotate them". I just said 'Please do not rotate my tyres, okay?'
Also, they disconnect my dashcam power every time they service the car, because they "don't want it interfering with the diagnostics check." But they do it as soon as they drive the car into the service area. Go figure. Pretty sure it's because they don't want me to see it takes 25 mins for them to do the service, they charge $300aud for. The least they could do is plug it back in again after the service. Sigh.

He is correct. The procedure is the swap front left and right wheels and back left and right. I know that there was once some nonsense about not swapping tire sides, but that was dispelled many years ago. Also, having the tires rebalanced is important.

Not for me he isn't. If your Tyres (tires) are directional (which most high-performance tyres are these days) they must remain on the same side of the vehicle for "rotation" where they are of the same size. The Genesis' tyres (tires) are not the same size. Just look at the outer edge of your tire and you will see if there is a directional arrow. Or check its specs online.

Yours may be directional, which would be an exception for rotating them. However they do still need to be periodically balanced.
Mine are not directional.
