If you have to drive the Genesis on snow days (don't have some other vehicle), then snow tires are a must. Personally, I would not go for a RWD in that situation.

Since you are buying used, and will probably keep it awhile, depreciation is not usually a big factor. However, I would imagine that RWD cars are harder to sell in Canada, but not sure I would call that depreciation.

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

What did you drive before the Genesis?

I had a BMW 540 with RWD that would go darn near anywhere in the snow... with snow tires.

Put the high performance tires on - ONLY - ...leave it at home when there was a chance of snow... really. 1/4 inch would park that car with the summer tires on.

I have only had my Genesis (4.6) for a few eeeks and not had the chance to drive in the snow this year (hopefully I wont!) and will be getting snow tires / rims for next year.

All cars depreciate (collector cars aside) the moment you pay for them when new. Buying a used car takes some of this off the table. Still.. that car is going to be worth less next year.. and the year after... because you wil be using it.

Make the best deal for the car you can, for the miles on it... and be done with it. Too much else in the world to worry about than if my 3 year old car is going to be worth less and less as time goes on...

.03 (inflation)

I wouldn't worry about depreciation, the original owner has taken the big hit. Personally, I would never keep a 2WD anything as my only transportation in an area like yours. I've always had a 4X4 for bad weather, but if you have to go with one vehicle and it's 2WD, a set of dedicated snow ties is a must IMHO. A set of Blizzaks is your friend.

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

I have the 4.6 RWD and winter tires are a must. I am running on Blizzak LM-60 right now and will switch back to Continental DWs for the Summer.

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

I just did my 1st winter with the Genesis/RWD in Toronto. Like everyone says, put on winters and you will be fine (I have Michilin-Xi3's). RWD does handle differently and you will notice some of the nuances. The car is fantastic, best bang for your buck and i am confident your will be happy with your decision in Ottawa. Good luck.

I also have the X-Ice3s that I put on 18" wheels. No problems.

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

I dumped OEM Dunlop tires in November and put new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires. When snow season started I added two 50 pounds sand bags in the trunk. I didn't have any problem getting anywhere in my Genesis.

And we had record snow fall this winter in South-East Michigan - 92".

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

I tried driving my R-Spec on the factory all-seasons in mild snow once this year. Once.

I got stuck backing out of my own driveway and almost couldn't make it up the ~10-15 degree incline at the exit of my neighborhood because there was a stop light at the bottom of that "hill".

I'll use my Subarus for snow. :)

I drove my 5.0 2012 sedan all winter with the OEM Michelin A/S tires on 18" rims.

No problems what so ever, just use common sense and slow down.

I remember when rear wheel drive was all there was and most people didn't even have snow tires. I got around fine way back then and still do. I very much like rear wheel drive for handling.

I just didn't go anywhere, or used my wife's car when the 8" snow came. Twice last winter.

The Genny is a heavy car for it's size and I have never added any weight in the trunk.

I was also concerned at first, but for nothing as I found out. I would have been an idiot to not buy the car for this reason.

Not driving or using another car when it snows is a luxury that the OP may not have, especially in Ottawa. I agree that rear wheel drive was the only choice back in the day. I did fine with RWD cars in Montreal during the winters, but snow tires made a big difference.

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

If you don't want to go the route of dedicated snow tires, you can do what I did and get a set of All season Continental Extreme Contact DWS. It made all the difference in the world over my Bridgestone Serenity All Seasons, in which the car was completely uncontrollable on snow and ice.

This was a very bad winter here in Minnesota and my Genesis had similar traction with these DWS tires as did my AWD Lexus.

I did not want the PIA of storing, mounting etc with snow tires. I have found a solution. Pirelli also has an excellent All Season tire. Look at the ratings in Tire Rack.

I have to agree with Griff. Car and tires were new in September, Michelin All Seasons. A little common sense and I didn't have any real issues. Mind you, next winter will see 17" rims and winter tires.

For the OP, I live on a farm near Cobden, half way between Renfrew and Pembroke NW of Ottawa. We get our share of snow .... <G>

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

I find it iinteresting that "late model" drivers have been so brain washed that many are afraid of a RWD car. ALL cars used to be RWD. When the original Mini came out in England it started the econobox. Transverse engine FWD etc... if you drive your Genesis in the snow on summer tires you will have trouble. As you would in a FWD OR AWD car. I found it difficult too get used to driving a FWD Honda civic in the snow, with snow tires on it! It was light and tended to float on top of the snow. Understeered iin an epic way!
The Genesis is far from the worst I have driven even on summer tires. That title goes to the 5.0 Mustang. The one just before they went retro. Posi, a touchy throttle, and a short wheebase made it a scary proposition. I was caught in an early snowstorm going through Hwy 88 in California's Kit Carson Pass. I stopped to kiss the (dry) ground when I made it to Sacramento! The RWD Genesis is predictable and works fine, just don't try for a speed record in the snow.

ALL cars used to be RWD.
All people used to live in caves. So what?

A long time ago I moved to the snow belt and had a RWD car. But I had to get studded snow tires for the rear wheels. These days cars like the Genesis have ESC and anti-lock brakes which both help a lot, but there are so many RWD or AWD options out there, it seems silly get RWD if a person can only have one car (assuming that one must drive when it snows, which is no longer true these days for many people who can work at home on snow days).

Re: About to buy a Genesis Sedan worried rwd

Just take a look at all the other cars on the road here in Ottawa that are rear wheel drive, like BMW(?). They seem to get around just fine from what I see. Get yourself some good winter tyres, like everyone says, and slow down to keep away from the idiots around you. Where are you buying the Genesis from?

Maybe some of the BMW's in Ottawa driving around in the snow are RWD versions only, but BMW does make xDrive versions for almost all it cars (BMW's all-wheel drive system).
