  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 12 Genny 3.8 has a C2402 code. It would appear that it needs a ABS motor. Is that the same thing as HECU? If I buy a used one will I need codes to program it? Has anyone done this ?

The ABS motor is part of the HECU so yes, you may need a replacement HECU. But first verify it isn't something less expensive like a wiring issue or blown fuse. Open the smaller fuse box in the engine compartment and look for 30 Amp fuses/fusible links, probably labeled "ABS-1" and "ABS-2." On 2009 models these are along the side wall opposite the electrical connector sockets. (I don't have 2012 service manuals!) Check them, wiggle them, take them out and re-seat them to make sure they are tight in their sockets.

Then look at the rather large electrical connector at the HECU - after disconnecting the main battery. Contaminated connections, breaking wires (critters chewing on them too), etc. can be the problem. The HECU is underneath the engine fuse box, it'll have half a dozen thin metal tubes/pipes (=brake lines) going in/out of it.

The 2009 service manual says the HECU "hardware" is common to all 2009 models but there is software that is model specific - engine size perhaps, other details about the vehicle. But not the VIN or other "keyed to this exact car only" stuff.

Once fixed, you have to clear the codes manually - they won't self-clear like many of the minor OBD-II errors.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your help. It is the HECU. I went to a different dealer and they are replacing the unit at no charge. Something that someone posted a few months ago about HECU failure and second owners qualifying for replacement. The service manager did not know about it but confirmed.
