If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Coming from a 2010 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SV, my next car purchase has boiled down to either a '19 G70 Prestige or '20 Sonata Limited. Drive-ability aside (understanding the G70 is far nicer), I'd like to compare the tech driver aids and ask for folks' real life opinions.

2020 Sonata Limited's Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist/Lane Centering and Lane Following all seem to be top-class.. Does the G70's ACC/LKA/LC/LF use the same "innards" as the Sonata?

I know the older G80 has an older system where people said the LKA was pretty poor (even dangerous). It seems the G70 improved on the G80, but I'd like to know if the G70 is equal to the Sonata or if it's already dated.

Thanks in advance!

I can tell you my 2020 G70 will absolutely drive hands off and stays centered in the lane until it gets pissed at me to put my hand back on the steering wheel. ACC works fine, will come to a complete stop if that is what the traffic does in front of me. If traffic slows in my lane and I change to a clear lane, the ACC will momentarily drop the hammer to resume to set speed. Can surprise you if your not expecting it. Don’t know much about the Sonata, but I have no complaints about my G70.

My understanding is the the Sonata has the next generation ACC. In the G70, you manually pick the ACC reaction speed, but in the new Sonata they used "machine learning" to decide how the driver wants the ACC to respond, ie do you want it to aggressively fill the space, slam the brakes, or leisurely catch up to traffic, etc.

Thank you. Do you know if the G70's Lane Keep is able to handle curves like the one in this POV review of the Sonata? I have the video marked at 11:38 as that's when he starts talking about the LKA system (which works without ACC enabled). The 12:08 mark has a nice curve that the Sonata handles beautifully and I'd like to know if the G70 can as well.

So, I have my LKA setup up with the most aggressive intervention and maybe 75% of the time it will handle curves.

The ability to steer comes down to how well the car sees the lane markings. Also, if one marking is the curb it gives up, eg in a neighborhood.

Yes the G70 will handle most freeway type of curves as long as lane markings are clear. Not sure how tight a curve it can handle for I only use mine when on the freeway. Freeway changes that involve a 90 degree sweeper that can be taken at 55mph it will handle with no issue. Never used it for off ramps that have a quick jog for too many lane markers can confuse it. Rain can affect how it sees the lines at times as well.

I have found that LKA handles highway lane marking without a problem. Country roads are a different story. Curves in 2 lane roads are not reliable. I have had instances where it took the curves perfectly and several where it overcorrects into the center double yellow line then jerks back. Of course, I was experimenting when it was safe to do so. I use LKA most of the time except mountain roads.

Looks like you want a car that drives for you instead of a car that is exciting to drive?

No.

Given the price tag and how Hyundai/Genesis are industry leaders when it comes to driver aid tech, why wouldn't I want to vie for their latest offerings and being an educated consumer?

Furthermore, before COVID, my work commute was 1-1.5 hours one way (in often thick traffic). There are times when I want spirited driving, and other times when I just want the convenience of ACC, LKA, etc. easing the trip on a Monday morning.

Also, my wife just got a new Subaru for basically half the price of a G70. Not fun to drive at all. But damn, their "Eyesight" tech is solid.

if you want both spirited driving and convenience, the sonata just cannot fit this bill. So in my head your math should be: spirited driving + above average tech = G70. Way above average tech + 'dad fast' driving = sonata

LKAS works really well. I’ve had mine go for 6.5km without touching the wheel. But these were in perfect conditions.
What those conditions are I can’t tell you.
No glare on the sensors and cameras, clear view of the lines, no oncoming traffic, no strong cross winds, and who knows what other parameters it looks for!

But most times, I can only go for 20-30 seconds. Normally 2-3km is my average on good days!

On super straight Texas roads I've driven for many miles with my hands off the wheel. Was an experiment not something I'd recommend.

Also, the eye sight is great because it can survive a 5mph crash.... Unlike every other radar system on the market.

My wife has a 2017 Outback and the Eyesight braking & acceleration associated with the ACC is much smoother than on my G70. Perhaps it's because the Eyesight camera/sensors are at top of the windshield rather than behind the grill...

Thank you. What are your thoughts in comparing her Outback and the G70 when it comes to the reactive Lane Keep Assist (where it reactively nudges you back after you drift over a lane)?

FWIW, neither the G70 or the recent Subaru's have Lane Follow Assist (basically Lane Centering where it proactively keeps you between the lines). But the newest Hyundais (Sonata, Palisade) do have it.

I'm absolutely leaning toward the former. The Sonata feels like a compromise for what I'm looking for.
  • I do not care for the Sonata's rear design with the horizontal brake lights and the "SONATA" emblem across. Much prefer the G70's classier, more reserved, look.
  • Hyundai-Forums.com users say the Sonata's leather seats are stiff (though it make break in over the years), and of course weak engine even with the 1.6T (which will be noticeable for me coming from a V6 today).
  • The upcoming N-line with 2.5T is intriguing but I might as well gun for the G70 if I'm buying for performance. I also don't care for the N-line's sportier cues like the half-leather/half-cloth seats.
  • The Sonata's remote control reverse/crawl forward feature is really cool but I park far away to avoid door dings, and can't envision using that feature much on a practical basis.
  • Sonata doesn't have adaptive headlights (Hyundai brands it as dynamic bending headlights). It's really well done in my wife's Subaru and I've always wanted this system back when I couldn't afford nicer cars. :p
  • Have to admit Sonata's LED dashboard is nice, though I wish it was a full-fledged "virtual cockpit" like what Audi does. Conversely, Audi didn't implement touchscreen controls until their 2020 line, and I find their A4 and A6 interior design to be a bit cold stylistically.

The LKA in my G70 is more aggressive (I have it set to "active") than in the Outback (which is nonadjustable, but can be turned off). My wife dislikes the way the Subaru LKA feels (she finds it "twitchy"), so it is only on if I turn it on when I use her car. I never found it particularly bothersome and always leave the LKA on in the G70. She doesn't drive the G70, but I suspect she wouldn't have anything good to say about it if/when she did...

lol well why didn't you just say that from the beginning!! "I can't have the wife having more techy tech than I!" 😂

One option I haven't seen discussed is waiting for the refreshed G70, which will bring the latest and greatest tech along with it. I'm not sure if it fits your timeline. It's been rumored for 2021 or 2022.

Does anyone know if the 2020 or the 2021 has Rear Traffic Avoidance?
The 2019 has the warning there it beeps when there's something going on when you are in reverse but it doesn't automatically brake for you!
I'm asking cause my 2019 Sorento has the warning but my in-laws got the 2020 and it does the automatic braking in addition to the warning!

Just goes to show that technology improves over time.
