  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
    If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have read in this forum a couple of times where people are complaining about lag and hesitancy when accelerating and I think most of us have chalked it up to turbo lag and how people are driving.

However, I had this happen this morning for the first time and it is a real "thing"! It isn't turbo lag - I've been driving this vehicle since September and it has never done this before.

If I'm stopped and floor it, there is a 1-2 second delay before there is a response - I always thought this was exaggerated, but it isn't!

When I'm driving about 40 KMH in the city - in ECO, Comfort or Sport mode - I can press halfway down on the accelerator - and nothing happens! If I floor it, there is a delay and then a response, but I was very concerned that NOTHING happens even pressing the accelerator halfway down. Interestingly, the fuel consumption gauge jumps up as soon as I press the throttle...but the RPM doesn't change! It seems like the transmission needs to shift down to respond and it doesn't do its job.

I mentioned this to my service manager - and I have an appointment to do some other work on Thursday anyway, so they are going to look at this. They believe that this is a tranmission issue. They are going to reset the electronics on the transmission and they say it takes a couple of weeks to relearn my driving habits and are hoping this will resolve the problem. I'm hoping it's that simple, but I wanted to post this since this is an actual issue!

Update...getting worse now.

If I'm on the highway, driving 100 KMH and I floor it, it shifts down and the RPM sticks at 5,000 RPM. It will not increase speed or shift up...just stays static at 5000 RPM until I let off the gas, then I can speed up slowly if I don't press too hard on the accelerator.

Something is very seriously wrong!

Thank you for bringing this back up. I've notice that if I do a light, 1 second press of the accelerator, let off, and then floor it, there's a 2+second delay. Happened when I was trying to get around someone into another lane. Not good. Please keep us posted.

My GV70 goes in for service tomorrow. They will have it for two days so I hope they can figure this out. They are also replacing the steering rack system to address the heavy steering issues when it gets cold. I will update over the weekend if I get it back Friday afternoon.

Can you detail the heavy steering issue? I just got the car a few weeks ago, have 800 miles at the moment. We just had our first snow since I got the car a couple days ago and I felt like the steering was "harder". I just chalked it up to being normal.

It is similar to the difference between comfort/Eco modes and Sport mode...the steering gets heavier. When it is about -15 C or colder, the steering gets heavy like Sports mode but even worse...even though it is still in Eco mode. They have heard this from several customers now. At -40 C it is quite hard to drive. It improves as it warms up but this isn't normal.

Interesting, sounds similar to what I was feeling. It wasn't too dramatic, I thought it might be in my head. The thing is, I noticed it 2 or 3 times, not just once. We only got down to around -12 C, so maybe that's why it wasn't so dramatic...

Yeah, everything is dramatic at -40! ;)

Well, they said they had good news and bad news. They think they found the acceleration issue and it needs a new throttle body. And they found an antifreeze leak in the water pump so need to replace that too.

The bad news is the parts are all backordered and could take 5-6 weeks to get in.

They expected me to take the vehicle back and drive it until then but I said no - it's dangerous to drive, especially on the highway when you can't accelerate when you need to. It's unsafe as it is. They are trying to get approval from Genesis Canada to keep it there while the parts come in - and that would expedite the parts as well.

So...I'm wondering if I'm getting close to a lemon law situation here too. So far, they have replaced:
* Rear differential
* Steering rack
* A couple of under-body panels
* Driver's side door handle (due to locking failures)
* Now the throttle body
* Water pump

I'm pretty sure that's more than $10,000 they've put into parts for this vehicle! And I don't have a lot of confidence that all these parts will last long term either.

Not sure what to do at this point.

We don't have lemon laws here in Canada. We do have some recourses available to us though.

Are you net being provided with a loaner by them?
Yes, I've been reviewing the CAMVAP guidelines to see if I am at that point yet - I don't think so as they are still trying to do repairs. There doesn't seem to be a limit in the number of repairs they make either.

Yes, I have a loaner - a brand new G70 actually - but they aren't sure they can let me keep it. They need to get Genesis Canada to authorize me keeping the loaner and waiting until the parts come in...they say I can drive it...I say it's dangerous, so we'll see what they decide. I haven't heard back from them still after 4:00 on a Friday, so I'm assuming I keep the loaner for the weekend and wait to hear back on Monday.

I've been a proponent of Genesis and supporting them as they are trying to fix all the issues that arise, but I'm getting tired. Especially considering I had someone run into my front fender back in December and it took almost 4 months to get that fixed. This is all just exhausting and the opposite experience I expected to finally buy a new car. This is the first new car I've ever bought and I'm not sure I'll ever do it again.

I would seriously consider trading the G when you get it repaired.

Now with a car accident on the CarFax, I would lose a lot of money in trading it and I probably have more than the average amount of mileage on it, so that's not a great option either. A buy back would be a much better option but it looks very rare in Canada.

We're getting this acceleration lag issue also and now it's often coming with an orange check engine light. We just took our GV70 in for service and they were unable to diagnose it. It disappeared for a week and yesterday it's back on again. And two calls to the service department at our local dealer are not even picked up. A real shame as otherwise, we love it.

We are lucky to have a service team that takes all my complaints seriously and are good at finding the problem.

You might want to try it at highway speed as it is way easier to replicate for me anyway. Flooring it at about 100 KMH/60 MPH shifts down, RPM increases to 5000 RPM and nothing happens...stays at 5000 and the speed doesn't increase at all, so it is easy to replicate and demonstrate a big problem. If it is behaving the same way...

They just updated me on parts ETA - April 24th to get a throttle body! Unbelievable...everything always takes 5 weeks for parts. They're trying to expedite but this is ridiculous. Who launches a new car line and has zero parts available for it??

Actually, I am a little envious of how good your dealer is with their service. They are quick to diagnose and repair (once the part comes in). I am satisfied with my dealer, but it took me three visits to get my rear differential replaced and I have to travel over 200km to get to my dealer.

Genesis definitely needs to step up on the parts issue. Covid and strained supply lines are no longer valid excuses. This just makes Genesis sound cheap because to me, 5 weeks sounds like they ship parts as needed from Korea to avoid the cost of inventorying parts here.

Yes, they have always diagnosed every issue on my first visit, so kudos for that!

Yes, every single time the part comes from Korea. Back to the 80s with hard to find import parts.
