Acceleration lag

While driving, I notice there's a bit of a lag between the time when I depress the pedal and the car accelerates. Is this normal? Can it be adjusted?

Not really (to both questions), at least in my experience. There IS a lag from a slow-rolling (not quite) stop, but that's pretty common in other cars too. But like I said, never experienced it "while driving".

I believe it is a function of the drive by wire system. You never really saw that in the old mechanical linkage systems. Unless the linkage was bad I guess. Fairly annoying.

I thought that there was a TSB to reflect the ECU. I have the same issue but have not done anything about it.

Our 2004 Acura had the same type of lag. It is true that most of the time the old solid linkage systems had no lag. I know that my 65 Mustang with a 4 barrel carb has no lag.

Yeah i have the same issue, my car is a little over 45K miles and i thought it was 'getting old', now i see others have the issue, is there a TSB for this?

this is normal. depending on how hard and fast you push the pedal, its telling the computer what gear to put the car in to get the acceleration your looking for

But what was the advice? A few weeks ago I decided to pass a farm vehicle on a two lane road. As soon as I pulled out, I saw a car in the distance so I hit the pedal as fast and hard as I could. There was more of a lag than I would have expected or liked, but once the car responded I was really moving and passed without a problem. My heart raced a bit too.

IF you want the vehicle to consistently RESPOND, consistently put the pedal to the metal!

I believe the vehicle constantly learns driving style.

When I first bought mine, I too thought that the lag was unacceptable. Now I feel that it responds much more quickly after driving agressively for a while. Try it out, let me know if what I write makes sense.

yeah. for me gradual and fast acceleration works better than pushing "to the metal" - but I might be wrong about that

I replaced my air filter with K&N and have not noticed any lag under sudden exceleration since the change. This is not an endorsement, just my experience.

I believe that the best explanation was given here and says that lag comes because computer is trying to figure out which gear to use and selecting that gear. I don't think air filter has anything to do with it. Btw, for all my cars (Toyota, Merc, BMW my mechanics strongly advised not to use K&N - they said it's the easiest way to kill MAF sensor and gain in performance is insignificant )

I've tried to shift gears manually yesterday - I must say it's totally different animal I have the steptronic on MB AMG, but used it once and though auto is pretty much the same, but here it looks like in manual mode you can get better acceleration dynamics.
