  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The excellent sounds system in the Genesis was one of the many reasons I purchased the car but even though I don't consider myself much of a "bass" person I felt the low end was a bit hollow for most of the media that I was using. I read some of the forum posts about adding a subwoofer and learned a lot. I thought I would take my own lessons learned and post them here in case someone else finds them useful.

First of all I will say that I am very very pleased with added depth that the sub brings to the music. This was well worth the time and effort. So much so that I am surprised how much I am enjoying the addition. In the end I don't have a single rattle or even the slightest distortion which is a tribute to how well built the car is. All the pieces that I opened showed a very quality built vehicle with dampening and fastener isolation etc.

In a nutshell here is what I did:

I added a 10" Rockford Fosgate P35D210 (low profile) subwoofer to the trunk. I used an Alpine MRP-M500 amplifier to power it. I wanted a minimally invasive solution so I built a custom enclosure. All my connections were made directly in the trunk. I used TSB 08-01-010-1 which describes how to properly get at the factory amplifier in the trunk. From there I found an accessory line (12v in ACC/Power mode and off with the car) and tapped into it. This meant I didn't have to run a line to the front of the car. It was an 18 AWG wire (light pink at the bottom of one of the connectors). I used a multi-meter to find it. I dropped down the top trunk liner to get access to the subwoofer speaker wires and used them as line level input on the amplifier. Of course I pulled power from the battery and then ground went to one of the trunk anchor bolts. I built a custom low profile box to fit the exact height and basic width of the furthest recessed part of the trunk. It is a 0.5 ft^3 sealed enclosure.

The enclosure is currently a snug fit to keep it in. I don't expect it to move but I will probably anchor it more securely when I find a solution that allows for quick removal in the case I need to use my pass-through.

Many thanks to those that posted valuable information on the forum. Without it I would never have attempted the addition. For those that really enjoy listening to music I HIGHLY recommend it. I can still control the bass from head unit if it is ever to much or to little.

Excellent! Thanks for taking your time to share.

Excellent post and nice job on your new addition.

In viewing the image of your trunk I noticed that the factory speakers were nicely enclosed by a 'headliner'. I know this has been discussed before elsewhere on the forum, but I'm wondering the model year of your Genesis...mine is a 2009 V6 and doesn't have any cover over the rear speakers. I would like to add one, if it's not cost prohibitive, to protect the equipment from being damaged by things loaded into the trunk.

Thanks in advance.

Bigel, It is a 2011 4.6. In 2011 the 4.6 only comes with tech. I didn't realize that the headliner/speaker cover was optional. I wonder if that is because the model year or the option package?

Assuming the trunk didn't change for 2009 to 2011 the headliner was a single piece secured in the rear with three concealed clips under the rubber weather seal. Once these are removed (requiring significant up force and a screwdriver to push them back) there are two additional clips in the rear that are just disengaged by force. These clips are removable plastic clips (I presume so that they could be replaced easily). After these clips are removed the cover drops down in the back. I never did fully remove the cover but it is securely attached in the front somehow. I didn't look closely because I didn't need it fully removed.

I would assume that you could purchase this single part and add it to your genesis......If you post a pic of the top of your trunk I can tell you if the connection points look about the same as mine.

Bigel, elsewhere on this site is a long thread about this cover. It was not part of early V6 cars though it did come on all early V8 models and all cars about half a year after US introduction if I remember correctly. After owner complaints, it became a "free upgrade" by Hyundai to early V6 owners - most just had to grumble to their dealer and Hyundai would ship the parts for installation. At least in the USA; can't say what Hyundai Canada or elsewhere decided.

Thanks Mike, I knew there was previous thread. I'll look into ordering the cover/headliner next time I'm at the dealer. I can't imagine it's an expensive part.

Would like to know how you would rate the increase in bass on a scale of 1 - 10.
Looking todo this Asap, just broken on where I want to put the Sub to maximize trunk space but also get the best sound.
Thanks

I added 2 10" Kenwoods in a box with accompanying amp, which in retrospect, is too much. I actually have to turn the bass BELOW the 50 percent mark. I would say there's at least a 200 percent (or more) increase in bass. As I'm not one of those guys that listens to his music with the windows down, it's overkill for me.
