  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi, all.

I'm looking for a 6MT in white with gray interior. There are none in my home state of Massachusetts, & the closest state that has them is Georgia, which has 3. I'm willing to fly down & drive it home if I can get a good deal.

What do I need to consider in order to purchase out of state?

Can I avoid sales tax, since I live out of state? Can I avoid reg fees, title fees, & doc fees, since I'll be registering in a different state?

Do I need to get the car serviced at a Genesis dealer, or can I take it to a Hyundai dealer? The nearest Genesis dealer is 50 miles away, but there are a couple Hyundai dealers within 15 miles of me.

Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

No, you cannot avoid sales tax. When you register the car in MA they are going to want the tax money. You will find some information here: MA Vehicle Registration - How to Register a Car | DMV.ORG

You can avoid the GA fees but will have to pay the MA fees. As for the dealer fees, there still may be some as they will have to do some paperwork for you. I'm not sure about getting a temp tag unless you do the sale and do the registration before you pick the car up.

As for service, the concierge service is good for 50 miles so that should not be a problem.

What was not said explicitly is that you cannot take your G70 to a Hyundai dealer for warranty service.

Check out what your state requires. When I bought out of state I registered and paid sales tax pretty much the same as if I had bought out of state. I also drove on a temporary tag issued by the dealership I purchased from. Some states may differ--so be dure to check your state. I paid no fees or tax to the state of origin.

Also, some states of purchase differ. I think someone mentioned that if you purchase from Florida, that state may impose a fee.

The big problem in Florida is that the dealer fee is so high that sometimes is not worth to buy here. Between $699 - $999 depending of the dealer.

Sure you can as long as they have genesis techs on staff. There are no genesis dealerships in my region, yet the Hyundai dealerships sell the Genesis and have at least one genesis techs on staff.

I think he was making the distinction between Genesis dealers (most of whom currently operate and share space with Hyundai dealer--same parent ownership) and only Hyundai dealers.
Some Hyundai dealers are not Genesis and will not become Genesis and will not service Genesis. 😀

We are talking about the OP G70 where he has a Genesis dealer in range. Is that your situation?

I believe if they sell Genesis, that makes them a Genesis dealer, even if they mostly sell Hyundai. My situation is that when I search for a Genesis dealer on the Genesis website, the closest Hyundai dealer that sells Genesis is 49.6 miles away, even though there are a couple Hyundai dealers that are a lot closer. I don't believe that a Hyundai dealer would have a Genesis tech onsite if they weren't also a Genesis dealer...

Not quite. Any Hyundai dealer can sell and service 2017 and 2018 G80 and G90 BUT only a Genesis dealer can sell and service 2019 G70. There are some exceptions if there’s no Genesis dealer nearby.

As mentioned, only dealers that have signed a new franchise agreement with Genesis can sell and service 2019's and beyond (those are the dealers that show up when doing a dealer locator on genesis.com). You should have no problem with that dealer servicing your vehicle. The valet area can also be extended beyond the 50 (some report 60) miles to handle situations where there are no dealers closer. In extreme cases where there are no dealers in a state, or not for hundreds of miles, an owner will get permission from Genesis to have work done at a Hyundai dealer. In that case there is no valet service and the owner must pay for the service and then be reimbursed by Genesis.

If a loan is involved generally the lender has their own rules about registration and taxes for they are the lean holder. I’ve purchased a vehicle out of state once, paid cash, simple process, dealer gave me the manufacturers certificate of origin which is needed to surrender to your tax office during registration as well as bill of sale with purchase price. First time I have actually seen one of those certs before. At registration in my home state, did my paperwork for title, gave them the cert and my purchase paperwork, paid my tax, registration and title fees and walked out with my new plate. Was not a big deal. Dealers like to attempt to control that process for when they register many cars at once with each having paid $150 an up in dealer fees, they make easy money on the process. When I get ready to buy my 2020, if my local dealer gives me crap, will head to Tulsa from DFW and purchase there.
