In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Advice on a used 2012

I know how you feel, the car that fits your needs and exactly matches what you was looking for, sits right there , and costs less than other would cost, it's hard to say no , but if later any issues starting to pop up, it's won't be that good anymore.
Are there any other years and models what you like ?

That's exactly the problem. The thing is, I'm not in any urgent need to buy, but this one caught my eye because it:
1) has the tech package
2) is not black either inside or outside (the way they were optioned out in this country, to get a non-black interior, you need the blue or red exterior, I think)
3) is not a U.S. car (though it's worth noting, unlike, say, GMs, I've yet to see a U.S. Genesis for sale)
4) is <10km away from me
5) is being sold by a franchised Hyundai dealership (maybe I am wrong about this, but I admit that I trust those more than I trust Joe Blow's Luxury Imports)

[Keep in mind that, counting all packages/colours/engines, there are 12 2010s advertised in this province, 5 2011s... both years which are more likely to have lower-mileage lease returns]

But I am leaning against it right now... or at the very least, if it's still on the market next weekend, going back there and inspecting it much, much more thoroughly.

"One thing I just discovered today: Hyundai's 5-year warranty in Canada only covers radio components for 3 years..."

Same in the U.S.
Genesis has so much tech, that It's crazy to buy one without an extended warranty.
I'm covered for EVERYTHING, for 100,000 miles w/ zero deductible.

Does your dealer offer an extended warranty??......at a reasonable price??

I would assume not. They vaguely mentioned a possible warranty through some large third party, but given they weren't particularly eager to discuss it, I expect that it would be at a very unreasonable price...

Viv, a good streaming audio setup can elimate the need for an XM radio subscription, especially if you listen to a small number of channels.

But assuming you're concerned about battery usage on your phone, what's the advantage over just plugging it into the aux and/or iPod connector? If you're already plugging your phone in for power... at most it's an extra cable?

(Random really off-topic aside: how well do the 09-14 Genesises (Geneses?) work with Lightning-connector iPhones if you get the Apple 30-pin to Lightning adapter?)

Here is another red flag or you!

Maybe they know the underwriter will not insure it, because, A- the accident or B- there is something genuinely wrong with the car.

Here in the states, the dealers fall all over them selves to try to sell you a third party warranty, so they can make some extra money as part of the deal!

This entire thing does not sound right to me, but that is just my opinion....

Again, taking a good mechanic (that you trust) with you to check it out, might be a good idea in this case...

I generally agree that dealers like to sell third-party warranties here too... so yes, I found it concerning that the guy's attitude wasn't "oh, come into my office, I'll get you a few quotes."

Also mildly troubling to me is the fact that the original owner traded it in with 100km to go on the warranty. Is he just a risk-averse person who doesn't want to have an out-of-warranty car (but who can't lease because he drives way too much)? Or did something, possibly related to the accident or possibly not, make him think he didn't trust this car?

Honestly, I'm strongly leaning against it at this point absent some more detective work, including getting a detailed description of the collision repair work, the detailed service history, and looking at the thing much, much, much more thoroughly than I had on Saturday.

Hi Vivien:

We've exchanged comments on several other threads. Don't know how long you are wiling to wait, but if you can hang on till next fall, I am planning to trade my 2012 V6 Tech for a 2016 when they come out. The problem is - as you mention above - the new Genesis isn't available in Canada as a V6 Ultimate package.

Like you, I want my gizmo's so, while I really would like to go with another Genesis, I don't want to have to ante up for a V8 just to get the other toys. In another thread here called "An unorthodox introduction", the Hyundai Canada rep who is responsible for deciding on trim levels is looking for input from Canadians. He has indicated they are considering a V6 upgrade for next year but...

BTW as others have mentioned, there is no loud noise when you start the 2012 V6. It is no different than the my 2009 was.

Yup, indeed. IIRC, you got your 2009 from the same stealership where my dad had gotten his? It's interesting you got another one while he eagerly returned his at the end of the lease... (though I am hoping he'll look at a 2017)

Hard to say - it's one of those things where if the right car comes along at the right price, I'd take the plunge. By next fall, I may also have a more stable job, at which point... I might look at the 2015/2016 and just get around all this used craziness. :) (I'm not really a used car kind of guy, it seems...)

I've gone over the 2015 spec sheet; it's not as bad as I first thought. The lower two V6 trims, with standard adaptive cruise control, sunroof, adaptive headlights, navigation, etc. actually deliver quite a bit of gizmos. A lot more than on those ex-rental base model 2013s flooding the used market, that's for sure...

Yes, I'd like the 17-speaker Lexicon and the bigger navigation screen... but... I think I could get an Ibiza Blue/Ivory 2015 'Luxury' V6 and be very, very, very happy with it. (Of course, I haven't driven the 2015, so... I could always have an unpleasant surprise)

BTW as others have mentioned, there is no loud noise when you start the 2012 V6. It is no different than the my 2009 was.

Thanks. I don't know what to think about the noise. The thing is, I'm sure I've stood outside a 2009 being started many, many times... and if the noise from this 2012 made a serious impression on me and you say the 2012 is supposed to sound the same as the 2009, that's a very bad sign.

I did really like that 2012, though. It's very similar to the 2009 (which I thought was an absolutely fantastic car, and I probably drove it 7000km+), except that heated steering wheel... mmmmmm...

I don't know what to think about that sound. Maybe it's normal for it to sound that way if it hadn't been started in a week and a half or so. But the fact that when I heard it (while standing behind the car while the sales dude started it), my gut reaction was 'there's something wrong with this car'. It did quiet right down after a second or two...

That is useful information. Some engines, depending upon the weight of oil used, take a few seconds to fill their hydraulic valve lifters and in the meantime the valves can put up quite a clatter. It should go away very quickly and not re-occur once the engine is running. A deeper thumping sound might indicate loss of lubrication at the mains or connecting rods and that could be much more serious.

If the problem turns out to be the lifters it is easy to correct. Just use the "heaviest" (least viscous) oil recommended for average temps in your area. The lighter the oil the more it tends to drain out of the lifters after the engine is shut off.

Now, having said all that, it occurs to me the V-6 may or may not have hydraulic lifters. I don't know.

For some reason I can't get the quote function to work tonight, so bear with me.

Can't recall if your Dad bought his at the same dealership as mine or not. If I recall correctly he bought his in Orleans. I got mine at the one in south Ottawa. I looked at a lot of other cars when my lease was up - Audi, Lexus, Infiniti etc.. Wound up going for the 2012 Genesis demonstrator from the dealer in Bells Corners. Won't ever darken the door of my original dealership again even though they are by far the closest dealership to my place. Other than the ridden my first Genesis, t was a great car and for some reason, I either got used to the ride or it smoothed itself out after about 18,000 k. I love the car, but I'm not sure the Canadian mothership or MOST of the dealerships have a clue about customer service - at least at the higher end of the spectrum. I'm hoping a few more Canadians on this site will engage with the guy from Hyundai Canada that started the thread I mentioned above.

Don't really expect that you would still be looking for a 2012 next fall but thought I'd mention it. Assuming nothing changes but the numbers on the odometer, I could sell this car to mother (or anyone else) with a clear conscience anytime next fall. The only issue is - as others have mentioned above - the warranty. I'm not sure you can get an extended warranty in Canada that covers the electronics. Go figure!?! Best of luck with your job situation, hope you get the security you are looking for, it does help with life style decisions doesn't it.

I've had the 2015 V6 Luxury out for one test drive and was quite impressed with it but don't like a touch screen - especially after seven years with the DIS and really enjoy listening to DTS Music DVD's. I'm not sure I can give that up.

I d have to add my support to the others who have advised you against buying the car you are looking at right now. If you have as many doubts as you seem to have, listen to that part of your brain instead of your heart - there will be other cars out there that don't set off alarm bells with their history.

Good luck with your search, I know you have been looking for a while now.

Cheers

Yup, he got his in Orleans; for some reason I thought you got yours there too...

My dad shopped almost everything when his lease was up. Ended up getting a 2012 Acura TL. In my view, a major downgrade from the Genesis (no rain-sensing wipers, no adaptive headlights, no power tilt/telescope steering wheel, etc.). But in his view, along with Michelin X-Ice3s, the thing actually has traction in the winter, so he really likes it...

Oh yes, it does help for major financial commitments like $50K for a new 2015 :) Let's just say that the job market has bounced me around for the past 4-5 years or so... hence why I'd pick up a used one if I found something I really liked, otherwise waiting is not the end of the world...

The warranty not covering some of the electronics after 3 years is a concern, I agree. How have your 2012's electronics been? My dad's 2009 needed a new amp... but that was after <2 years...

So the 8" system in the Luxury is touch-screen only? And the 9.2" system is both touch-screen and the DIS knob like the 2009-14? (For the record, _I_ think the knob system is better... but the two of us may be the only people in the market to think that)

Maybe the 2016 will have a V6 trim with the 9.2" system... but I have a feeling they'll also kill the Ibiza Blue. :(

Funny I had a 1999 Acura TL that I mostly loved, but couldn't take what they did to the styling of the car so didn't even consider Acura when the lease was up on my Genesis. I found that with good winter tires, the Genny is fine in the winter.

My 2009 audio system hiccuped once but was fine after being left off for about an hour. It never reoccurred. My 2012 has had two minor hiccups where the nav spent about 45 seconds re-booting itself but has otherwise been rock solid. (knock on wood)

So the 8" system in the Luxury is touch-screen only? And the 9.2" system is both touch-screen and the DIS knob like the 2009-14? (For the record, _I_ think the knob system is better... but the two of us may be the only people in the market to think that)

I've seen quite a few other 1st gen Genny's with the tech pack. In fact my experience has been that most of the Genny's I see are 3.8 Tech pack trims. Don't know if it's just a co-incidence or what.

Maybe the 2016 will have a V6 trim with the 9.2" system... but I have a feeling they'll also kill the Ibiza Blue. :(

I'm really hoping that they do. I would likely go with the other blue or another white one myself.

Let us know if you decide to go with the one you are looking at.

I apologize for the funny quoting format - can't seem to figure out how to do the multiple quote thing.
Cheers
