  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know if K&N air filter or a similar after market filters are known to help Genny achieve improved MPG and/or increased horse power?

The only thing it will do is keep you from buying new air filters every couple of years. The air intake is controlled by the computer. Personally, I think it's a waste of money.

Here is one for you.

What goes in...must come out.

If you upgrade your airbox or filter you should also upgrade your exhaust as well.

Its like taking a deep breath in through your mouth and then trying to release the deep breath through your congested nose. Its worthless.

I love changing over to CAI's but I will only do it if the exhaust opened up as well.

Cutting out your secondary cats would be a good start! They are not monitored by O2 sensors.

Well, dont listen to me...I have a lot of ideas but have yet to find the funding to proceed! HA!:p

Exactly. If you want any real performance changes you have to change the entire system. The airbox would have to go, change the headers and catback exhaust system.

Keep in mind that there are trade-offs in whatever you change. What may give you more power won't be as quiet, etc. This may be what you want, which is cool.

And those trade off's may be unintended consequences, like, poor overall fuel economy. God forbid something malfunctions in your emissions system, the dealer has the ability to deny warranty protection. And you won't have any recourse because you altered the manufacturers original specifications. They wouldn't sweat you for a K&N filter, but if you changed the exhaust system, my guess is they aren't gonna just let that slide.

You are talking about the entire system right? From the intake, to headers to the pipes to mufflers etc...

My understanding is that changing the mufflers has no affect on the warranty.

Intuitively, I would think not, but I think it really is up to the judgment of the service adviser, and what in the car malfunctioned. Seriously though, do you want to take this chance? I tell you what... you go first.

Legally, the dealer has to prove that whatever malfunction happened was a result of your modification. Now that isn't to say that you aren't going to have to jump through some legal hoops if they want to press the matter, but in the end they would have to prove it. You have to ask yourself if it is worth the trouble.

The K&N really has no "meaningful" performance benefits, everything is controlled by computer. What you do get is some improvement in filtration (cleaner air) going into your engine with no loss of airflow. The oil on the filter and the material composition provide that. You will save some money over the long term since the filters essentially last forever. The tradeoff is having to clean/wash and re-oil periodically so it's a trade off. I just put one on my new 3.8 Sedan and have one on backorder pending release for my wife's 2011 Sonata. I've used them for years and have been pretty pleased overall. Hope this helps.
