  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Air Filter Box Contraption

So does the 2012 3.8L v6 have this magnetic flapper?
And is it actually inside the air filter box?
To my understanding the V6 has it the flap under the air filter of the air box.

Meaning, under the filter element but inside the box containing the air filter element?

The 2012 5.0 does have the flapper. Maybe it's a GDI thing because from what I have heard, the 4.6 does not have it. I removed the entire thing. Take off the screw at the top of the contraption and pull it straight up and out. Definite increase in response. I have not noticed any decrease in mpg.

I just removed the magnet from its small slot in the flapper door with a small screwdriver. Made a significant difference in of the line acceleration, even in ECO mode. Simple job! Good Results!!

Yes, the 2015 V6 has the magnet in the flapper door. It's very easy to get too. Simply remove the structural brace over the air filter housing, flip open the snaps to reveal the paper air filter element, and remove the air filter. The flapper door mechanism is directly under the air filter element. So far I have only removed the magnet from the flapper door. Easy to do with a small flat bladed screw driver. I'm contemplating removing the door completely as I have already seen better throttle response from a stop, and at low speed. I have not seen any carbon filter that's being talked about. Air being fed into this box is where DRS posted earlier, coming from behind the radiator, so it is not hot air from the engine compartment. I too think this thing is installed to get better EPA gas mileage numbers. Nothing else makes sense to me.
Easy job of removing the little magnet from it's slot in the flapper door. Makes a significant difference in off-the-line performance. Less than 30 minutes for entire procedure. Saved the magnet and holder for future reference.

I opened my air filter box to inspect my filter and noticed inside the plastic box a strange looking flap type device which is held closed by a light magnet. What is the point of this thing? Can I expect to see a slight improvement in acceleration if I remove this flap?
Please note that this flat does not exist on either of the two air filter/air intake manifolds on the 2017 5.0L G80 ultimate package.

The 2015+ 5.0 models with the twin air boxes do not seem to have the magnetic flap. The only real restriction for the 5.0 stock intake are baffle shield boxes located behind the bumper on each of the air duct inlets. I think the shields prevents large debris from entering the intake system.
