  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

hey guys, was replacing my high beams today for the first time, and had to move the air intake box, and noticed that the intake had some sort of secondary filter attached to the top of the box. Im not sure about hyundai's, but in my previous e60 bmw, they had the samething however it was called a charcoal filter, and what it did was actually quieten the airflow. Im guessing this filter in the genesis is doing the same thing, silencing the air flow. I have removed the secondary filter however haven't had a chance to take it out for a ride yet, will update after.

heres the secondary filter attached to the top of the box

so took it for a drive, sound wise not sure if it made that much of difference, on wot i do hear bit more of the engine. Our cars are soo quiet inside that its hard to tell. However my car feel a bit more responsive, which makes sense since that foam filter was prob restricting bit of air flow. Still not sure what this secondary air filter is for. For now i am gonna leave it off.

I wonder if it is in the manual as a serviceable part?

There is been quite a few posts on this subject over the years.
Hyundai, it seems, has never officially declared this to be an air filter or just a silencer.
In my opinion, it cannot be an air filter as its open spaces are far larger than the open spaces of the paper air filter before it. It is simply a silencer. BMW has a similar silencer on my '07 Z4, which I removed. The removal was not a warranty issue - the car was serviced thereafter with no comments about its removal. Gas mileage improved somewhat. I removed this silencer on my '09 and '11 Genesis. It is a minor performance improvement.

The '12 model 5.0 V8 with direct injection does not have this silencer.

Thanks for posting that information. :)

It surprises me to think that an automaker would sacrifice apparently measurable fuel economy for a (barely noticeable?) degree of cabin quietness, especially on a car with over-the-top power in mind (429HP!) Personally, I love that throaty sound of a big V8 accelerating. I know they have a lot incentive to maximize the average fuel efficiency across their entire product line; why take a hit for a bit less noise from your most powerful engine? (Note to self: Remove coolness-factor reducer).

How much of that is simply psychology? Best confirmation would be to put it on a dyno. Logic would say that there should be an increase, but logic doesn't always apply in these situations.

It's like the other day when I came home and said to my wife, "Gee dear, your hair looks great! What did you do to it?" Her response..."I washed it."

It more than likely does not restrict the air flow. More to just keep larger items from blocking the main filter.Your car only needs a certain amount of airflow. Raise the hood of a newer covette and look at the size of the tubing from the filter to the throttle body. Now that looks restricted and the car has 505 HP

No matter what lies upstream the computer controls all the air the engine needs.

That is one of the main reasons aftermarket air filters are a total waste of money. The other reason is that MORE AIR FLOW INTO ENGINE=MORE DIRT SUCKED INTO ENGINE.

My computer liked my upgraded air filter and controlled it so it put 15 more horsepower at the wheels on the Dyno. :)

since i have removed the secondary filter, i haven't really noticed any difference in performance, my butt dyno says 1hp, heh. However im pretty sure the intake sound has increased on wot. But again, it might all be in my head, lol.

I may put the secondary filter back this weekend just so i can compare.

In BMWs, i read that the charcoal filter was there to pickup vapors coming up from the engine after stopping the car. An anti-pollution thing.

As for 'sucking more dirt into the engine'..that's pretty much bogus. I have not see any 'data' that supports THAT claim.

I use a K&N Filter in my 2012 3.8. I did not notice any increase in HP.

I BOUGHT the K&N filter because I can RECHARGE it and it eventually pays for itself and saves me money. I can clean it twice a year and it still saves me money.

As for the "it will gum up your MAF sensor" argument, NO it won't. I clean all the MAF sensors on all my K&N-equipped vehcicles with CRC.

1 HP? That might be the Wishful Thinking Dyno.....LoL.....never know. I sure could not tell a 1 HP difference in a 333 HP car...that would make me able to detect, what, a .3% change in HP if I had as sensitive a "Butt Dyno".
And with 429 hp, the sensitivity is even more; detecting a 0.23% change. But that's me.... :)
