Alignment

Have noticed that the alignment on my 1 1/2 week old 4.6 tech is a little funny. Checked cold pressure in tires and all at 33 psi. Highway driving today between 70 - 85 mph was pulling pretty hard (if I let go, I would have been off the road). Thought I was on a crown in the road, but no it was consistant. How does one really check alignment? Been reading about adverse tire ware and thought alignment might be an issue with these delivered cars?

Do Hyundai dealers have their own alignment machines or do they farm it out (i.e. can I just bring it in for a check or does it require a bit more?)?

Any thoughts?

A lot of people have had similar problems to varying degrees. Mine pulls the left, but probably not as hard as yours (based on your description). I don't think that most people who have complained to their dealer have gotten complete satisfaction, but if yours is really bad then you should take it in to get aligned (under warranty). One of changes in the 2010 suspension/steering is supposed to address the issue.

Mine always pulls to the left hard when on the interstate in the left lane. When I am in the right lane, it drives relatively straight.

Unfortunately, the problem is not just one of alignment, and the 2010 parts may be needed to really fix it correctly. But if your pull is really bad (mine is only moderate) then I think the dealer should try and address it under warranty. If not, complain to HMA since they have definitely heard this before.

I know this may sound ridiculous, but I have a suspicion that the suspension tuning at the Southern California Hyundai facility was done on a left turn race track. I know they gave the press an opportunity to drive the car on a race track.

12,000 miles for the alignment. Mine had 12,111 when I took it in for this. Sucks, but mine isn't very bad at all. My tires are wearing evenly.

Took to dealer today for install of wings (you buy we install, part of my deal) and spoke to service. They stated alignment machine was down, but 9 out of 10 alignment issues with the Genesis is cured by reversing front tires (Left to right and right to left) and we'd be happy to do so when you are here. Wings installed in 15 minutes, but I wasn't willing to wait for tire change (golf course was calling).

Any thoughts on their supposed cure?

i have the same alignment issue, not as severe as yours but i do have to put some pressure to keep it straight. I'm going to the Danbury CT Hyundai dealership soon to get my speaker cover installed and i'll have them work on that as well.

Not really on this thread, but you mentioned speaker covers? Have read elsewhere that the trunk is not finished, do you mean that the speakers should be enclosed?

I had the alignment issue too (pulling left in either lane). Went to the dealer and requested the alignment, but they had to bring it to a local shop because they did not have the rack that accomodates the larger tires. Drove away and by the time I arrived home I realized that it wasn't fixed.

I called the service manager back and they directed me to a different local (Toyota) dealership in the same ownership group that had a new alignment rack. They did a full, four-wheel alignment and found the issue in the back left wheel. It now drives great..

Not really on this thread, but you mentioned speaker covers? Have read elsewhere that the trunk is not finished, do you mean that the speakers should be enclosed?

Yes the speakers should be enclosed in the trunk, they could be damaged when you put packages in the trunk.

Went to dealer and they switched front tires. Still feel a slight pull to the right. Had my brother, owner of MB S500 take it for a ride to assess pull. Comments were "know what your talking about, but test drive mine and you'll see what the definition of a pull is ..." Going on a trip this weekend, will report back.

Feeling like it I want to get it right, nows the time!

I just got my car back from getting the alignment checked as I was getting a pull to the left. As I suspected it was off. It now tracks nice and straight. The service advisor showed me the before and after and the before had some red but all was green in the after.

Ok back from first road family road trip (650 miles round trip, 80 percent highway driving), after front tire swap as referenced above. Car now tracks better, but pulls a little in one direction then the other with a slight shimmy in the wheel. Service manager did call me back during my trip to see if the swap cured my situation. Will return call today with my analysis.

Cruised on average about 80 mph with the tach reading 2,250. The 4.6 loved it with an AMPG of 26 with 87 octane and if I needed power it was very responsive in that range. Car is sturdy and feels good, but it seems to me that the tires are slightly out of balance (shimmy in wheel) and that there is a slight alignment problem as well (pulling slightly to right then correct and pulls slightly to left).

Don't want to give up with the dealer, but also don't want to be a thorn in their side!

Anybody have similar a experience(s)?

Called manager on Monday morning, called me back at noon with keys to a loaner in hand. Dropped off car and was told that it should be done tomorrow. "I will put my chief technician on it." Called today, Tuesday, for progress and spoke to service rep who stated that they recentered the steering wheel and that they are still waiting for a speed balance to be performed. Asked if recentering was an alignment and she was confused. Asked for manager and he immediately got on and stated that they put my car on the rack and it was within spec. He also mentioned that the Hyundai rep was in and told him that their machines were not accurate enough for the job. The car needed to go to a speed shop who only work on high performance cars. Currently car is there and should pick up tonight.

Anybody know what recentering the wheel has to do with alighnment issues?

I don't think anything. Unless your steering wheel was off center to begin with, which seem unlikely

Reversing the tires sounds like a bs way of handling an alignment issue. If it's out of alignment, it's out of alignment. Changing the tires from one side to the other will have no effect. If you now have a vibration in your steering wheel, it may well be because your tires have been scalloped by the incorrect alignment. Open your hand, palm down, and run it along the tread of the tire. If you feel a higher side (either leading or trailing) to the individual treads as you run your hand along the tire (especially on the outside tread block), then your tires are most likely scalloped. The tire's ability to "correct itself" through wear will depend on how severe the scalloping is.
