  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Almost 12k G70s sold in the US in 2019

That's good news. It would be bad if the G70 sales declined, or were much worse than expected. With the steep drop in sales of sedans in general, Genesis was taking a chance coming out with a new one. For those of us that prefer driving a sedan over an SUV, let's hope it pays off for them.

Sales of G70 were 1222 in December, perking along at about 1,000/month or a bit more. December was highest month except for May at 1447. Year to year is not helpful since full rollout did not occur until during this year.

2019 US Vehicle Sales Figures By Model

From that list of car sales for 2019 the two vehicles just above and below G70 in annual sales are Nissan Leaf (electric) and Honda FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle). I have never seen either of those cars on the road and Leaf has been on sale for a while.
Hyundai Veloster and Toyota Sequoia are the ICE Petrol vehicles closest to the G70 by sales.
1,000/month for a new car means it will rarely be seen, and even for an existing model from earlier years.

Yeah, I guess 1000/month is still a low number. By comparison, the monthly US BMW 3 series sales for 2019 are about 3x that.

Yes but it’s not really a fair comparison

BMW is much more established as a brand and and with their sales dealers. Genesis will be playing catch up for a while.

personally, I don't see this is a bad thing, you stand out in the herd of the average cars.
the uniqueness drives curiosity with others, as people usually don't know the brand and how to to 'size you up' vs the competition. This leads to more interest in the Genesis brand overall and you become a brand ambassador for them as an owner.

As for the brand, Kia released a Stinger ad for the SuperBowl in 2018 and it built a bit of momentum (source)-- it's a very expensivie ad investment for any corporation, but it puts the brand on the map for the largest amount of people in America. It may be a bit overkill to do it for the g70, so they may do it for the Genesis SUV... we'll know in a few weeks.

car sales data by models, if anyone is interested: 2019 US Vehicle Sales Figures By Model

January sales=716. Down from 1222 in December. The sedan market was down ~10 percent from January last year. G70 still struggling to make a mark. Same source as December for figures. Closest January sales model by numbers were Acura ILX and Hyundai Veloster

Here's hoping that virus doesn't hurt production. Some line are being shut down due to lack of components from China. I have yet read specifically which ones. Since I have one on order.. fingers crossed.

I read a study that said people, especially women, who are central to many auto purchases, want the "feeling of safety" (ALL cars are vastly more safe than even ten years ago), high driving position (negated since so many vehicles are just as tall), and the option of space for people and stuff, even if rarely or never used. So, so many times I see a large SUV with the christmas tree on the roof and I cannot decide what they bought the thing for. School me if I am off base.

It is crazy how much everyone is moving to SUV's. I personally don't get it.
I'm glad Genesis finally has one but only because it is in my interest for them to be a strong competitor and profitable to provide me with service on my sedan. I drove and SUV for two weeks after my car was hit. It was not a bad thing but I saw no advantage for my use.

When I lived in CT though, there was a definite benefit on snowy days. Many SUV drivers seem overconfident and tow truck operators made money pulling them out of the median when they spun out.

I gotta say, I'm surprised at that low number.. although based also on Stinger sales (743) January isn't the month for Sports Sedans.. ?

Pretty much every weekend west of the mississippi was a cold, wet mess, so that probably affected sales. Also the dead period before people get their tax refunds.

G70 - 716
Stinger - 743
IS -741

Canada
G70 - 47
Stinger - 62
IS - 88

While Jan. is not typically a big sales month, there is no reason why the the G70 should continue to be outsold by the Stinger (a niche bodystyle) and the aged Lexus offering.

Again, think Genesis miscalculated by making the rear passenger compartment as tight as it is; making a similar mistake by shortening the WB for the GV80.

While the sales distribution model for Genesis Canada doesn't help, nonetheless both the G80 and G90 outsell their Lexus counterparts.

The G70, despite getting the most positive reviews from the automotive press out of the 3 Genesis sedans (the biggest criticism being the lack of rear passenger space) - has performed the worst within its segment.

Unfortunately BMW has joined a growing number of manufactures who will only release quarterly sales numbers rather than monthly so we may not be able to see how the 3-series did in January to compare. Maybe the number will leak out and be published.

Let me give you another consumers perspective. Don’t get me wrong I love my G70 but if I could only afford one car there is no way in hell this is the car we would own. We bought ours as a flashy fun commuter car and roll a big truck and yukon xl as our other two cars. Granted we have major towing needs with owning a boat, a utv car hauler, and rv. But if as had none of those we would still own a medium to large suv. Our kids are mostly gone and drive their own cars but the g70 back seat is unusable and I can only get two sets of golfclubs in my trunk if I take the actual clubs out of one of the bags and push the bag forward. Also being a guy who is 6’2” this is not a long distance car. I drove my 2016 genesis ultimate long distances and it was great. This is where an suv comes in. Our yukon xl is the softest most comfortable ride and we can take anything we want with us and have a 7000 lb trailer behind us if needed. Cars are fun just not very functional. If you gave a family this car simply won’t work.
