  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So, got to mess with android auto in a G80 Loaner, and I seriously don't understand the hype, it takes forever to connect to my LG V30 and the interface is slower than retarded molasses. So my question is what's the with the hype?

I don't get it either. I hate the fact that it has to be connected via a cable. Uh, time to catch up and go wireless!

Well, I doubt Bluetooth is fast enough, even on the cable the interface is super laggy. So yea, not sure why everyone wants this.

I can’t speak to the interface on the Android side, but my experience with Apple CarPlay has been very favorable. Quick-syncing with the iPhone, the screen display mirrors the iPhone, and I enjoy the ability to immediately access my personal library of music wherever I drive.

I haven't used Android Auto on Genesis but I did use it on a 2018 Elantra rental on a road trip recently and absolutely loved it. To me Google Maps is go-to for navigation and the way it pulls info from my phone Maps (recent places, recent searches) is cool. Also Spotify and other streaming apps support such that you get the whole interface and you can control things just from touch screen is a plus. I wish my 09 Genny had Android Auto support.

I think all Genesis 2017/18 have Apple Eyes Free. Just hold down the talk button on the steering wheel until you hear the Siri beep. Then you can say things like “read my text” or “send a text to my wife” or “play my music” etc.

I use it a lot and it doesn’t require you to take your eyes off the road. No setup required other than to pair the phone.

Had it on my last Sonata and it worked great. The only negative was the cable but since 90% of the time I'm in my car my phone is charging anyways I didn't see it as a big deal. Haven't been in a Genesis with it yet but my Sonata was fast and accurate using AA. Way better at understanding voice commands than the system in my Genesis now. If I could redo my purchase I would probably go with a lesser model to get the AA. I love the HUD display but I spend a lot of time in the car and just saying the name of a song or a name of a place I want to travel to or call and its done is missed. Also getting updated weather, movie times, store hours, texts all by just asking without touching your phone was nice.

I wish I could speak from first-hand experience. I will say that when things like Waze and Spotify (IMHO the closest thing to car/phone "killer" apps) get integrated properly on the Genesis it might extend its usefulness appreciably. Waze because with a good data connection, it will basically replace the built-in nav, have better traffic mitigation, easy address input, and not require you to send out for update disks every couple of years for two bills a pop. Spotify because it will replace some aspects of cds, terrestrial and satellite radio.

I use mine daily with a Samsung Note 8 and have found no lag or bugs with the system. I use Waze all day long for navigation with no problems and it plays music from Amazon Music and Pandora natively which is great. One of the main reasons I did not get an Ultimate when I purchased my CPO was to be able to use Android Auto because I refuse to pay for Map updates every year when they are free on my phone.

The 2018 G80 Ultimate, does have Android Auto. Does anyone know when using WAZE for directions, are the up coming turns displayed in HUD (head up display)? They are with Genesis internal GPS.

I didn't use waze, but google maps kept prompting me since I was on my way home, and did not see anything in the HUD.

Yes its a 18 loaner ultimate with AA.

That’s one of the big advantages of using the native genesis nav, your eyes stay on the road with the HUD.

Yep, that's a huge advantage, to see the up coming turns in HUD.

Yes, when I mentioned that Waze should be "integrated properly", I mean take over the main display and use the HUD. Same with Spotify- it should take over the main screen and function like the built-in entertainment. Buttons on the steering wheel should advance or tracks, I should be able to select playlists with the control knob.

I think it would be really difficult for your car to have that type of integration with random apps on your phone. Things like Bluetooth hands-free calling is a standard communication protocol and it works the same on almost every phone you can imagine. Anyone can write something to integrate with that. Random apps (like Waze, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music, insert dozens of other lesser known music players or map/guidance apps) whose interfaces can change with any update and you've got a recipe for disaster when trying to integrate with them.

It's much easier to simply pipe the music through the standard bluetooth or wired connection to the car audio and be done with it.

I agree it will be a challenge, but I think it's possible. And I think with how big Spotify and Waze are, a necessity (Panddora and Spotify together make up 50 percent of the streaming music market, and make no mistake, streaming is the future, with all its strengths and weaknesses). FYI Genesis even without Android Auto or CarPlay already integrates with Pandora (via BlueSync IIRC).

Anything is possible given enough time and money but I don’t expect it to be feasible for a minimum of several years. Pandora (I think) and Spotify (I know) already integrate with Apple Eyes Free. You can start, stop and change tracks. I think there will be a lot of opposition to any further integration that requires you to take your hand off the wheel and your eyes off the road. Anything you can do with Siri you can do with Siri Eyes-Free just by speaking into the car’s mic.

I'm sure it will come, but will take time. The typical Genesis owner is on the older side. While 86% of the 18 -29 age group have smart phones, only 30% of the 65+ have one. Of that 30%, only a smaller portion are using Waze and the like. The demand versus owner need is probably not yet justifying the money for development yet. While technology usually trickles down from the upper to lower type cars, this may be something the Elantra will have early on to satisfy that market. In a few years, the demographics and competition will demand it. Meantime, a lot of Genesis owners remember paying extra to get the optional AM/FM radio in their car.

EdP you make some good points. Consistent with that message, my Mom (in her 70s but certainly is no Luddite) was having a dinner party and on the afternoon of the party, she openly lamented about not having time to pick out the perfect mix of CDs to put in her multi-cd player. I made a play-list for her on Spotify, piped it through my JBL Extreme speaker, and she was happier than a bee in honey. She was amazed at how compact it was and how I put together a 4 hour play-list in a matter of minutes.

I am coming to that conclusion also. There is only one system USB port and using it for the cable to my phone means I have to unplug the USB stick used to play our 2000 song music collection. Too much bother when everything is considered. The Bluetooth pairing works very well for Pandora etc. I don't want to use WAZE if it means giving up turn by turn directions in HUD.
