If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 2013 Genesis Coupe has a Long High Pitched Tone heard both when Driving, and when PARKED with engine running. It's loudest at the left rear wheel. It is NOT a fan, Not a loose gas cap, Not the AC running, nor a wheel or axle. This sound comes and goes and is not constant, but sometimes lasts for miles of driving, and for at least an hour when parked with engine running.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Thanks for your replies. Bob

Fuel pump? I don't know if the coupe uses an "in tank" pump or an external pump... but if the noise gets louder when you remove the gas cap then it's a loud "in tank" style fuel pump you're hearing.

Fuel pumps often make noise when:
* they're going bad

* when the pump is physically HOT. Thermal expansion of certain parts reduces internal tolerances leading to rubbing. Many fuel pumps use the gas flowing through them to carry away heat; "in tank" pumps often need the pump submerged in gas to carry away heat. If the noise is most prevalent when the gas tank is 1/4 full or less this might be the issue.

* something is blocking fuel flow making the pump work too hard. Or the gas cap's air vent valve (lets air into the tank to compensate for the gas getting consumed by the engine) is bad, causing a big vacuum in the tank which the pump then has to fight. If the noise goes away when the gas cap is opened, have the cap checked/replaced.

* they're poor quality/cheap model pumps. Lots of aftermarket replacement pumps are cheap knock-offs and make noises not long after installation. many pumps sold on ebay fall into this category.

* really high pressure fuel system pumps (like the ones typically found on direct injection engines) often make a whine noise simply because they're running at high RPMs. Normal.

Thanks MikeC. Sound does NOT get louder when the gas cap is opened, just continues. Does Not make the sound until the car is hot and driven for awhile, then is a continuous High Pitch Noise, loudest at th left rear wheel coming from under the trunk area.

I know of nothing else in that location that would make such a noise. It's Not an aftermarket pump, this is a new car with 256 miles on it.

Where can I find the location of the pump, does anyone have a manual?

Go to www.hmaservice.com and sign up - anybody can. Then you can download PDF files of the factory service manuals. You'll have to specify your model year, vehicle type, and engine size. Then download the fuel system manual. You'll be able to see if your car has an internal fuel pump (which would get louder with the gas cap open) or an external one. I suspect you have an external pump. I have 2009 sedan manuals since that's the car I own; I've never downloaded coupe manuals.

THANKS MIKEC. The pump is IN the tank.

Took it to Hyundai Dealer this morning, one tech said it was the High Speed Fuel Pump that comes with the Turbo. He said he has 2 Tubos and they all sound like that. Service manager heard the sound and was Baffled. Said he'll "Call the Rep" and see if there have been any other complaints.

Will let you know what the "Rep" said when he calls me back.

there is NO sound deadening in these cars or insulation. Noise amplifies all over the car. Takes forever to heat or cool them down. Seems like they would put a little into these cars..

I have a 2013 Hyundai Genesis coupe 2.o turbo with exactly the same problem. Only 30k miles. Would love to know what you find out.

Yeah I hear it sometimes too. Either I got used to it (now that I think of it, that noise hasn't bothered me in a while) or my new exhaust is so loud it drones that noise out.

I think it's the fuel pump whining.

The Walbro 255 LPH in tank pump I had on my SR20 powered S13 was super loud. Since the coupe is a 2.0 turbo as well I imagine it needs a fuel pump with a similar flow rate.

I talked to realtor Bob (he originally started this thread) and he said that hyundai replaced the fuel pump. He was able to obtain a "service bulletin" for the issue, and that hyundai is aware that some fuel pumps have bearings that make the nose. It is Campaign #13-01-008. I am taking my car in tomorrow morning to have them look at it. I will post here and let you know what happens. I'm hoping for a new fuel pump because it is very loud. I have this great looking car and this annoying sound. Embarrassing.

Service tech listened to the car and agreed the fuel pump is very loud. They called Hyundai and we're told to replace it. Yay! Glad they are taking care of customers!
