  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2011 4.6 and I love it! I'm curious to know if any of you own a BMW in addition to your Genny. 650i gran coupe to be exact. Lol, that is my dream car!! I don't plan on selling my genny, but I get so tempted to trade it in for a beamer. But I've conceded to just wait and work hard to where I can keep genny and go still buy my BMW. So my question is, for those with both, what are your thoughts on each of the cars? How often do you drive one versus the other? The newer BMWs that is (post 2010 or so)

This should be a fun discussion..

I had a 2007 BMW 530i prior to the Genesis and I wouldn't consider buying another BMW out of warranty. My coworker has a similar year 6 series and has had a lot of the same problems (some of which prevent the car from starting).

Not at the same time.

I bought a E90 328i while my Genesis Coupe was in the body shop and insurance decided to take two months to decide whether to total it or repair it.

I loved it and it took me a few months after getting my Coupe back to decide on which one to get rid of. I regrettably got rid of the BMW. Though I did sell it to my stepson's biological father, so I still see it regularly.

That feel stayed with me when it came time to replace the Coupe, I narrowed my search down to a black on black E92 335i with the N54 twin turbo and a 2011 Genesis 4.6 Tech and Premium. Ultimately I was buying something without an extended warranty and knowing about some of the faults of the N54 and BMW's typical shit ABS units, I went the safe route with the Genesis.

I will still own an N54-powered BMW sometime within the next few years, be it in 335i, 535i or 740 trim (I really fancy the idea of a 500+ WHP 7-series).

We've had our Genesis since 2010 and its been the most reliable car we have ever owned, including Toyota, Acura, Buick, Olds, Chevy, BMW and Mercedes. I currently own two Mercedes and just previous to that owned a BMW. I have no desire to own another BMW.

OK, lets talk math and probability

The likelihood of one person owning both the $93K BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the $53K Hyundai Genesis 5.0 (I figured this person would want an Ultimate) considering the limited number of each model available for sale in the US is very remote, then with the additional probability of this person being a member of GenesisOwners and seeing this post approaches zero.

I would estimate the likelihood for a 2011 4.6 to be even smaller. Sorry.

I did forget to mention, while I don't have a BMW alongside the Genesis, I do have a $20k, low miles W211 E350:

After my experience with BMW I wouldn't take one if it was a gift

I would! I'd take it, sell it for what I could get out of it, and use the proceeds to buy a Genesis!! :-)

This is a great idea - the next time somebody offers me a BMW gratis, I'll accept it, sell it, and put the money to a better use.

I had 2 BMWs prior to the Genesis. Mine needed a lot of unscheduled maintenance. I used to lust after the 6 Gran Coupe until I drove one. It is not very comfortable inside, and it is just a re-bodied 5 series with a $20K price premium. The Audi A7 is far superior.

Interesting that this thread just started! I just bought a 2012 Genesis a couple weeks ago after becoming disgusted with BMW. I've had 2 BMW's (among other vehicles like Jeeps, etc.) including my current 2010 535 X-Drive.

Bottom line? The 535xi is superior in performance and handling, plus better features as compared to my "newer" Genesis. But the Genesis is VERY close.

Here's the difference. With the older BMW's you could do a lot of DIY since the systems were a bit simpler. The newer BMW's have such exotic parts and systems, god help you if you're out of warranty! A simple water pump replacement? $1500. Plus towing since it kills the car immediately. You're dead in the water right in the middle of the freeway if that's where it happens.

If you have lots and lots of money, and don't mind spending it at your BMW dealer, get a non-warranty BMW. They're a great car and a great experience. Probably one of the best I've ever owned (and I've had Lotus, a couple Porsches, Jag, Corvettes and many more).

If you buy it new or newer, you're okay as long as you have warranty. And they do pay for routine maintenance items like wiper blades, brake pads, oil changes, etc. But once the warranty is over, the rates for parts and labor are astronomical. Even at a good indie shop, they are still about double for other more common brands (but no different than Merc, Audi, etc.). Premium cars have extremely premium parts and labor. Well beyond what most people would ever imagine.

My hope for my new Genesis (that has an extended warranty) is that it will: 1) Be more reliable than my BMW's were; 2) cost far less for parts and labor once warranty is over.

The Genesis is a slight compromise as compared to the BMW 535xi, true. But I can live with that since it is still a very fine automobile and very close to the BMW/Audi/Merc class of car. The problem with those high end vehicles is that they are a ticking financial time bomb once they are out of warranty.

The only BMW I would consider is a 1970 2002 (completely restored of course).

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
There's an '08 550i and then the '12 Rspec in my family's garage. Two very different vehicles. The 550i is the handler and the Rspec is the interstate cruiser that is also quicker than the 5er.

There was a poster (who used to post frequently) who added a 5er to his stable after he had his R-Spec for a couple of years.

Think he did a comparison of the 2 (probably can find with a search).

I had an E46 M3 ZCP before purchasing my R-Spec. Its not even a comparison nothing feels like an ///M. The handling and steering feel is unmatched. Till this day i still miss the car but i sold it due to expensive repairs. variable cam timing unit (VANOS) needed repair (2-3k) and i needed new brakes (1K just in parts due to my M3 coming with the competition 14+inch floating rotors). my Diff bushing and drive shaft Guibo also needed repair (200$ in parts but a ton of labor hours). Thats apart the upkeep which if you do it yourself is actually not that expensive (except the 50k valve adjustment which i would rather pay someone to do(about 500$)).

I can also add that the level of refinement in my BMW is a step above the Genesis. Granted, the Genesis isn't far behind for it being Hyundai's first foray in the luxury segment.

such a different "zip code"
why even make a comparison like that?
While the Genny is a much better value....since when are luxury buyers considering value as their primary buying driver?
Its really all about the little things
