Interesting that this thread just started! I just bought a 2012 Genesis a couple weeks ago after becoming disgusted with BMW. I've had 2 BMW's (among other vehicles like Jeeps, etc.) including my current 2010 535 X-Drive.
Bottom line? The 535xi is superior in performance and handling, plus better features as compared to my "newer" Genesis. But the Genesis is VERY close.
Here's the difference. With the older BMW's you could do a lot of DIY since the systems were a bit simpler. The newer BMW's have such exotic parts and systems, god help you if you're out of warranty! A simple water pump replacement? $1500. Plus towing since it kills the car immediately. You're dead in the water right in the middle of the freeway if that's where it happens.
If you have lots and lots of money, and don't mind spending it at your BMW dealer, get a non-warranty BMW. They're a great car and a great experience. Probably one of the best I've ever owned (and I've had Lotus, a couple Porsches, Jag, Corvettes and many more).
If you buy it new or newer, you're okay as long as you have warranty. And they do pay for routine maintenance items like
wiper blades, brake pads, oil changes, etc. But once the warranty is over, the rates for parts and labor are astronomical. Even at a good indie shop, they are still about double for other more common brands (but no different than Merc, Audi, etc.). Premium cars have extremely premium parts and labor. Well beyond what most people would ever imagine.
My hope for my new Genesis (that has an extended warranty) is that it will: 1) Be more reliable than my BMW's were; 2) cost far less for parts and labor once warranty is over.
The Genesis is a slight compromise as compared to the BMW 535xi, true. But I can live with that since it is still a very fine automobile and
very close to the BMW/Audi/Merc class of car. The problem with those high end vehicles is that they are a ticking financial time bomb once they are out of warranty.
