  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any legitimate reason to avoid the 2009 MY?

Hi there,

I'm new to this site and I will openly admit that I am a badge snob. I have owned BMW's, Audi's, Saab's, Volvo's, and a Lexus. I loved the engineering and build quality put in to those cars and each played a roll in making me a firm believer that you have to buy a premium brand in order to get a premium experience. Well, today I drove a Genesis 3.8 and all my premium brand loyalty was washed away.

So to the point, I have a budget and I want to buy a Genesis 3.8 with the Premium and possibly the Tech package if I can find one at a good price. My cap is $17,000 and I want the car to have less than 90k miles. My guess is that limits me to the 2009 or maybe a 2010 model year. Experience with European makes has taught me the expensive lesson of never owning the first year of a new car design. Does this same rule apply to the Genesis? What inherent problems does the 2009 have that later models do not?

The 09 MY suspension rear spring is rate too high, giving it a rough ride. If you can live with that, you can get a helluva car for a downright bargain. But if you're good with tools, and willing to do the Wheeler-Dealer routine on it, then you can swap in 2012 suspension parts and improve it dramatically for less than a kilobuck.

2011 and up have better ride for sure.

dk where your located, but with a 17k budget, especialy after the 15s starting coing out, you can get a decent genesis about 2011/12 with premum maybe not tech

I'm located in Northern Utah so we pay a bit more here because we are sort of isolated up in the mountains.

The Genesis I drove last night was a 2011 so I really should find a an earlier model to be sure I like the ride. What suspension parts would I need to replace to give an 09 a better ride?

Thanks Scott! So if I got a 2011, it would already have the updated parts right?

I would think 2012 thru 2014 would be the best model years based on ride and features.

:welcome: to the forum. I did a quick search in Salt Lake City and here is what I found. Some great deals on 2013's in your price range. Make sure you check out the Carfax report on any used car you buy. Also I would recommend the extended warranty as well. Good luck and looking forward to pics of your new ride when you locate one.

Sorta - Hyundai revised the suspension on 1st generation Genesis like 3 or 4 times. The latest update and revision was in the 2012+ model, so really the best comfort and performance would be found in the 2012+ Genesis.

You may want to look at a base 2009. The base had 17 inch wheels rather than the much more common 18 inch. The 17 inch wheels ride somewhat smoother. The easiest way to confirm a base model is that the car does not have a sunroof. Unfortunately, you do not receive the tech upgrades with the base model. As usual, need to weigh the pros vs. cons.

You guys are awesome! Thank you for such a warm welcome.

I definitely want one with the Premium package at the least. The other upgrades such as the upgraded stereo or navigation aren't as important to me as Bluetooth, rain-sensing wipers, and heated seats. I've noticed that the 4.6 comes with many premium pack features as standard compared to the 3.8 which is understandable. I've read that the 4.6 has some cold start issues but that's about it as far as V8 only issues go, unless I there is something I didn't read yet. Do you guys think I would be doing myself a disservice by not even considering the 4.6? The real world driving power seems so negligible that you wouldn't notice in everyday driving.

Base Trim models have Bluetooth and heated seats (but not rain-sensing wipers).

The cold start issue with the early 4.6 can result in engine damage, so it is not just a benign problem. The 4.6 Tau engine was new to Hyundai for 2009, while the V6 Lambda engine has been around for while in different displacements.
